If MS and Sony launched optional systems with a "hybrid SSD/HDD", would you buy it?

Which next gen system would you buy?

- PS5 and Series X have small SSD storage (825 gb/1 tb), but it's super fast loading and allows all the next gen graphic perks
- If you want more storage, buy the Seagate Card for X, or install a PC SSD into PS5 at additional cost
- So if you got lots of games you want fast and looking good, you either hot swap with an HDD, delete and redownload, or buy more SSD storage
- Each system allows you to store and run games off an old external HDD at slower loading speeds and no next gen perks

New optional storage system model (PS5 or Series X Version 2)
- PS5 and Series X have a new kind of storage that is right away bigger (2 or 3 tb standard), it allows next gen graphics perks, BUT loads games slower like a last gen system (could be 1 min+ loading screens)
- The cost of these systems remain the same as current models
- Each system still allows you to store and run games off an old external HDD at slower loading speeds and no next gen perks

Do you want game makers to take into considerations ANOTHER case/SKU while developing a game? Because it's not only about loading time for a level, but also asset streaming DURING a level.

This is a terrible idea and a reason why MS/Sony didn't go with it

Nope.

In this situation performance comes first. Last gen and even the gen before that i always sided with space as the difference you got for SSD wasn't that massive and developers simply didn't make games with them in mind like other components, now........well I need that fucking speed lol

I don't see the benefit to me having many games on a HDD and having slow speed....sir, I spend MOST of my time playing the game itself, not simply cycling thru many games for lolz or something. So I'm going to do what I did last gen, I'm simply going to keep games I'm currently playing on the HDD, buy 99% of my games physical and upgrade only when the price is right as a luxury.

You realize how silly it is to just have a fuck ton of games on a HDD when your not even fucking playing 99% of it.

I'm currently playing BF4/BFV MP
replaying Uncharted 4 and Oblivion.

Having hundreds of games, doesn't mean they are all being played at once.

Have you heard of a contraption called "external drive"?

No way in hell i'm going back to long loading time. SSD space is fine, i don't keep dozens of games anyway.

No difference in price would be worth it.

SSD offers more than just shorter loading times on a static screen, even if we don't see it used to full potential yet, the gen is long and we can never go back.

Facts.

Even if I buy many games, why the fuck would I have them all on the HDD all at once? For why? lol Because I mostly play single player games, Im usually playing 1 to 3 games, as in I might be playing 2 SP titles like 1 RPG, 1 action or horror title and 1 MP title.

I won't be playing several RPGs at once, I rarely play more then 1 or 2 MP titles at once, I just don't get why I'd have hundreds of fucking games on my HDD, I'm not playing hundreds of games a day. Even know I still have like 700 gigs free on my 2 TB for my PS4 Pro when I cleaned it up, soooooo many games I wasn't playing and didn't have time for at the moment and I started to regret even getting a 2TB lol I'm not even using a lot of that extra space.

I'll upgrade PS5's SSD like 3 years down the line after I pick one up. I don't see me playing a shit ton of games at once any time soon and only a few titles I want directly on my hdd for years on end....ie BF series lol

The basic problem with this thread is that the OP believes that there is a 'same graphics' + HDD option. The SSD in both consoles will result in increased texture density and resolution due to faster turn-around of VRAM assets (asset streaming etc). The SSD and decompression pathways will be integral to what we can get graphically on the screen. This might be clear already with CoD Vanguard and BF2042 (we will see) but will at least happen over the next 12 months as engines are more or less fully updated to utilise these hardware capabilities.

Installed on my PS5 right now; Sekiro and The Last Guardian. I’ll plat, then delete. Installed on my PS5 next year; Elden Ring, Horizon and God of War. I’ll plat, then delete.

Installed on my Series S internal SSD right now; nothing. I’ll install Halo’s MP and Forza Horizon.

On my old 500gb PS4 I used to have like 10 first party games installed, only used like 250gb.

Stop having games installed that you won’t play, the problem goes away.

Don’t drink and post. No thinking went into this.

if any thinking did go into this, you would realize that this is effectively impossible with so many future games designed around a super fast SSD and needing to quickly pull data.

Think McFly! Think!

No. Even in enterprise IT, two or three years ago, we moved past hybrid storage. It's a dumb concept that is expensive and relies upon the past. Just dumb all around.

Nah I’d rather games moved forward and started using the SSD for more than just fast loading, new experiences would be nice. Gimping the drive for the sake of more storage when externals exist and expansion drives exist seems unnecessary imo.

I have a 2TB external, it only has my last gen stuff on it and I’d use that for cold storage if need be. But tbh I only play 2-3 games at a time anyway really, so not even come close to filling the SSD yet.

I first picked slower loading times till I read that op mean 1 minutes plus. Wtf that's not even the case on pc really except when you have a max shitty laptop HDD. Even decent drives load everything in below one minute.

I never hoard games on my system and always delete them after I finish them. Also doesn't the new Systems allow to use an external HD as a game repository anyway? Sounds to me the problem doesn't exist in first place anyway.

I still wouldn't pick the HDD option even if they went all out with 10k WD Velociraptor drives, which probably wouldn't be too far off SSD prices anyway :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Talks about an one sided poll… well the others options is really that bad and useless imo.

OP wants to know if excessive loading times, intentionally killing performance to enable old storage standards, crippling the new generation's selling point... is a good idea.

Sure, I say' but not until Microsoft and Sony spend a few billion researching how to safely inflict trauma on the human brain in a way that enables all of us to be retarded.

The vast majority of console owners play a game for a while and then move on. They don't need a shit ton of storage to accomplish that. For the hoarders MS has you covered with those pricey 2TB drives. I think it would be possible to design a system that used a hybrid and basically cached the game you were playing "on the fly" in a way that only took a performance hit while moving the data, but that would only serve the hoarders and make the product more expensive which, would reduce sales.

I think the person who started the thread hasn’t realised about texture streaming and SSD advantage with that, not just about faster and slower loading
