How do you feel about VR? I never use mine apart from maybe once a year and I'm starting to get sick of it

It's great with the right game, but with so few games worth playing for it, it ends up just sitting on the shelf. And for as expensive as it is, that's not good enough.

Its initial "wow phase" dies out after a few games.
It sucks to keep it lying around taking up space.
It sucks to clear out a wide area to use it.
It gets updated and improved constantly, so why buy an expensive one now that gets outdated in 2 years.
You end up only considering playing in VR when it's truly worth it, like Half-Life: Alyx, but you end up skipping "alright" games because frankly, it's tiresome to play in VR compared to normal gaming.

In "the far future VR will rule gaming", who the hell knows, maybe. But right now it's like buying a $500 ticket to take one ride on a cool rollercoaster.

I use it infrequently. There's only a few games I play in VR. Loved Alyx, and I have more "neat" VR games like gun club, tetris effect, etc.

My set up isn't ideal for games like Pavlov (I only have a CV1). I do wish more games used it, like Forza.

I think VR is the future, but we need more software. I'm hoping Sony ports Wipeout to PC. I've always wanted to play that in VR.

How can you be sick of something you never use?

Anyway, I use my Quest 2 now and then, but basically only for stuff that is made for VR and only works in VR, like Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, etc. That stuff is a lot of fun. Traditional story-driven games I prefer playing on console.

What time is it?
I understand the appeal of more immersion but gaming is a leisurely activity for me and being tethered to a headset is cumbersome and often not comfortable. It's like a worse extreme of motion controls. I've only tried PSVR and games like Thumper, Rez HD, Tetris Effect and Polybius are neat in doses, I'd never want to spend hours in the setup.

It’s dumb. It’s a camera strapped to your face. That’s the whole innovation.

The motion controllers that go with them have been done before on Wii, and better. On Wii you had responsive IR pointing as well, we don’t even get that on switch anymore.

But the same people who trashed wii as “lololkiddie” ironically lap this swill up and will defend it day and night.

I had a PSVR and sold it after a few weeks.

Many of the games I tried made me sick as hell. Rez was really cool but that was the only game I truly enjoyed.

I think VR is one of those things people only think they want. But what they really want is to sit stationary on their couch and control a game with minute finger movements and not be completely cut off from their surroundings.

IMO VR is mostly suited for short arcade-like novelty experiences. It’ll never overtake or supplant traditional gaming.

Well I have a have and a first gen vive in a closet or the garage .. somewhere..

It’s just not there yet for me. Movement and mass are the issues for me. They need a real life hank pym to solve these issues I’m afraid.

It's quite different than what the wii did.

Have you tried VR outside of laboVR?

Well, probably everytime OP wants to play VR games he looks towards the headset collecting dust, sighs after realizing what a pain in the ass it's going to be to get into a game and then just doesn't do it, ergo being "sick of it". I say this because I'm a huge VR fan, but even I'm having trouble getting the willpower together to play some VRchat, and I play that seated lol.

I love it but don't use it as much as I'd like to. Now I have the man cave set up I'm hoping to use it more.

No Man's Sky is amazing in VR btw.

Here’s the other defense “it was a gimmick when wii did it but now it’s better.”

Referring to the motion of course.

And sure the motion can have more depth on current vr ( I wouldn’t say better, again) than wii but the point i’m trying to make is people are jumping on the bandwagon because it looks “cool” instead of “a kiddie gimmick.”

I liked my OG quest but a eventually sold if for 3 reasons.

1) no 'big games' worth playing. Most titles tend to be small experiences
2) having a toddler around and was constantly worried about him walking by and me whacking him. When I finally got to play after his bedtime I was too tired to play anything where I had to exercise 😂
3) I tried a few games like Skyrim (hooking it up to my PC) where you can walk around (disabling the teleport option) and it made me feel really sick. I instantly felt sweaty and hot/bothered and it wasn't something I could fix. I tried staying with it to get my VR legs but it never arrived.

It's a great price of tech but isn't suited to my needs.

Used my PSVR a few times when I originally bought it. The games were, initially, incredible (REZ especially), but then I couldn't get over the motion sickness, the setup and what seemed like a constant battle with controller drift and feeling like the controller wasn't working as it should. I sold mine after a couple of months and I don't intend to go back tbh.

After playing racing games like PCars2, Assetto Corsa and Dirt Rally in VR I have a really hard time going back to racing on a flat screen. Also games like Firewall on the PSVR or Onward on PCVR has kind of ruined flat screen shooters for me too.

VR isn't the future of gaming IMO, but it's a damn good complement to regular flat screen gaming.

I love my VR headset and would like a new one eventually, preferably one that isn't tied to Facebook. I currently have a Rift CV1, which is definitely showing its age. I use it from time to time, mainly in the winter since that I get so damn warm while wearing it and doing all these weird motions. Half-Life: Alyx is one of the greatest gaming experiences I ever had in several decades of gaming.

Too little quality content due to it being too niche and very niche due to too little quality content and price of admission.

And even in a game like HL Alex the tech just doesn't feel ... mature. Maybe in another 10 years or so....

half life alyx on the index gives you a taste of true next gen and the next paradigm shift in video gaming. but unfortunately there's nothing else that even comes close...

Even if I got a free one, I'd never use it.

I'm not strapping something on my head, holding VR wrist pads, and playing a game that's more like a $20 demo. Kinect was bad enough flailing around. I'm not doing that with VR controllers pretending to slash a sword.

Also, I have no idea how good it would be vision wise. I have good vision (not perfect) at long distance, but anything close to my face is a total blur. Testing out my laptop screen right now if my face is about 8 inches from the screen it gets blurry and closer I get makes it worse.

I’ve used my psvr exactly 3 times. Will buy in again with less wires and higher resolution.
PSVR is such crap. I had one, and couldn't wait to get rid of it. Too much setup, too constricting to one specific location with the PS Camera and TV etc.

Oculus Quest 2, however, has completely blown my mind. Put in on, bam - it knows the areas I've marked in my house as safe, and no setup or cables. I stream PC VR games like Alyx to it, and play phenomenal Oculus games like Eleven Table Tennis, Beat Saber, Tetris Effect Connected, Synth Riders, Pistol Whip, Walkabout Minigolf, In Death:Unchained, Walking Dead etc - many with my friends, every single day. It's my workout routine, and Eleven Table Tennis is one of the best games I've ever played, especially with a table tennis bat-shaped controller.

I was a day one buyer of PSVR and to me it was worth every dollar. I bought a PS5 so that I can be ready for Psvr2 when it drops.

The proper games are very much worth playing.

i tried it for the first time just this summer. got PSVR off ebay for cheap.

Job Simulator and Walking Dead Saints & Sinners are pretty eye opening experiences for what it is. There is a physics sandbox, let me try this and see if it will work element, that u don't find in many games. And even with the low res of PSVR its still fairly immersive. I almost fell because i tried to lean on a counter.

i def wasn't a believer before trying it. but after grabbing a lighter out of a drawer and trying to set a bible on fire....then throwing it in the toilet in walking Dead. Im sold. These are just random scenarios u can come up with on the fly. Grab a wine bottle, flip it in ur hand. Smash the end of it on a dresser and stab a zombie with the broken bottle. it feels less restricted with how u tackle problems ingame

PSVR was amazing but long term use eventually hurt my neck to the point I stopped wanting to use it. Amazing experience but not worth the end result.

I like watching other people play VR, especially horror games, but it's probably not something I'm likely to ever invest in myself.

I wouldn't get enough use out of it personally.

Well it’s a pair of screens, not a camera. And there’s all kinds of other wizardry going on. Not sure why you’re so keen to paint it as really elementary tech?

Also, what’s with the constant wii comparisons? Nobody has mentioned the wii but you.

Chill out…

VR isn't a replacement for traditional gaming. It's about novel experiences that provide a level of immersion that you can't get from flatlander thumbstick gaming. It's like Guitar Hero. Sure you could play with a controller, but it doesn't make you feel like you're playing an instrument. There are a lot of great experiences in VR, everything from FS2020 to Beat Saber to Resident Evil 4.

In a lot of ways, it's like the Wii. What made a great Wii game wasn't always congruent with traditional controller gaming. What makes VR really click is feeling like you're in the game, and that can involve motion gaming: Standing, flailing, and moving around a lot. There are times I just feel too tired to play VR. And, sure, some people will just never be able to overcome VR motion sickness. I had a couple bad experiences with that before I got my VR legs.

If you're only using it "maybe once a year", then why don't you just get rid of it?
