Some details on Avowed

How many fucking games does Microsoft have that they're really seriously *honestly* just about to start making?

This, Everwild, Hellblade II, Perfect Dark, maybe even Fable - all basically seem to have been revealed at concept stage.

Man they really did get themselves into a right mess with their pipeline of exclusive software.
State of Decay 3 too.

Last year's conference was more about revealing the number of games coming to GamePass than anything to do with timeliness.

The titled always makes me think of a game that’s about something like this guys fiancé gets murdered while they were standing at the alter about to be married. Now instead of saying his vows to her .. he vows to avenge her… AVOWED!! Duhn Duhnn duuuhhnnn!!!…
I would watch that movie. Isn't that Kill Bill story?

What does "pre-production" imply to you?
If you would read what Jez Corden actually wrote you would know that he actually didn't mean to use word "pre-production".

But since he did use the word "pre-production" is it okay to question people and call them names or fanboys (I've seen this on GAF, Twitter, Reddit, etc.) only because they are going by the literal definition of pre-production?

If anything, it's on Jez, not the readers who are going by the usual definition. He should have been more careful with his description.

It's a good studio with good games. This could be one of them. A shame their last one isn't on that list.

If you have actual experience that you can share and educate others on what "pre-production" really means in application then that would probably be helpful.
Seconded. Pre-production literally means a phase before full production. That's why we have three phases: pre-production, full production, and post-production.

If the guy, based on his experience, knows that pre-production means something else -- instead of, well, pre-production -- he should explain it calmly. Because, to be fair, no one would really know it means something else just by looking at the word and its literal meaning.

Pre-production is the phase before vertical slice of the game, then you move into production, pre-alpha and all that good shit. Not sure why certain folks, in this case outside, want to change the meaning... Cringe.

It sounds like they have quite a bit done.. and Jez is just a moran who doesn't know what "pre-production" means.
Jez is pretty reliable as an Xbox leaker. His article gives a very good idea of what the game is expected to be based on early information...The RPG community seems to be excited about it based on this leak so i wouldn't call him a moron at all. Plus games aren't made linearly. like he said, when all he systems come together it enters the next stage. But its not like they finish the game, then add the voices...its done concurrently. So the lighting may be done, but the level build he saw just didn't implement yet.

"Concept stage" is part of making the game. Fable and Perfect Dark also have slower start because they have to build the team out. Onboarding takes up time and slows down existing people and you can get negligible benefits early on because there's less work to be done and you hired all these people you been training to work later and not now.

They bought a bunch of studios that were already working on games or soon to release games. It should have been expected that it'll take a while before you see things paying off.

Hope the visual tone is closer to the reveal trailer and not so colorful it makes for a more comedic mood.

Also hope MS announce some VR support soon, all these first-person games could really benefit from that for immersion.

Bro I said "moran" to indicate I was joking.

But he's been all over the place w/ describing what state the game is, and doesn't even know how old what he saw is. For him to have stated "deep pre-production" in the article was just, a clear mistake. He clearly just doesn't really know what stage the game is in. I don't think Jez is a moron at all but I also just don't think the article is particularly good.

I'm excited to learn more either way, but this was a bit of a fluff piece based on very little.

Oh, okay my bad. I don't really expect much from Jez other than information and fluff pieces. I'm just excited to learn more about the game. I'm kind of in the mindset of "it comes when it comes" so little details here and there makes he wait more bearable.

Pre-production means that its production didn't start.

So yes, it means planning and prototyping stages, where the maximum playable stuff they'd have would be a very short vertical slice demo and some prototypes. For a AAA games it means that they game is several years away from being released.

Even if he was wrong, and instead of in pre-production the game was well into productiion and in pre-alpha state instead, for a AAA game pre-alpha it means that it would be a joke to consider that the game could be released in a year or so.

Don't expect to see this game being released until minimum at least 2024 or 2025 if the game really is in preproduction or pre-alpha.
