Probably just getting FIFA nervous on licensing costs to get a break now PES has fallen off a cliff edge?

Electronic Arts has filed multiple trademark applications for ‘EA Sports FC’, which could potentially be the new name for its FIFA football franchise should it rebrand the series as it’s currently considering.

It has since emerged that the company filed video game software trademark applications for ‘EA Sports FC’ with the UK’s Intellectual Property Office and the European Union Intellectual Property Office on October 1 and October 4 respectively.

Were EA to cut ties with FIFA, Weber pointed out that it would still hold many separate league, player and stadium licensing agreements with other partners.

“Through years of building our global franchise, we also know that authenticity is essential to the experience,” he said.

“That’s why we focus so much energy on the collective strength of over 300 individual licensed partners that give us access to 17,000+ athletes across 700+ teams, in 100 stadiums and over 30 leagues around the world.

If there is a perfect game for GaaS it is FIFA. I wonder why it is taking so long.

With proper competition from Konami, FUT would have been F2P many years ago. But as things are right now, EA can still milk that cow and get usd60 for the base game.
Eventually it will happen.

I meant more like a base game (FIFA Forever or whatever) and then releasing seasonal content.
Knowing EA, they won't be doing this to save the consumer money. They will be going this route so they don't have to come up with an updated UI, artwork and new SKU every year. Expect to end up paying the same amount of money each season but without having to buy a new game.

Most likely FIFA wants a higher percentage of in-game packs purchases.
Maybe EA can see that in the future they will not be able to secure a new contract with Fifa like the one they have when the current one runs out and they are wanting to get the consumers used to a new name before they are forced to change it?

It's greed vs greed. FIFA likely wants to give the license to several publishers, but EA wants it exclusively. It's totally a purely strategic move.

Without the Fifa name, they will die and good riddance.
Time for Fifa to allow other studios to use the license
Not true.

PES used to be the king without licensing, and EA Sports is a brand which has become recognised.

If other devs could use FIFA license it would be good for competition (if someone was willing to try), but it doesn't look like EA would accept that.

EA has licence deals with hundreds of different bodies to get everything in the game and FIFA themselves are just one of them. If you think about it, FIFA is not really a good name for the series and although being the international body is only really in control of the World Cup competition and the International teams that compete. It would be like having an Olympics branded game that also had other events such as the Commonwealth games or national and regional meets. The FIFA name does have prestige and is an instantly recognisable brand so for EA to be considering a name change there must be some forced reason in the background.
