Mod for the Original Deus Ex Turns JC Denton Into a Female Character

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

Now, more than two decades later, someone has modded the game so that players will now be able to take on a female version of Denton.

Uploading the file to Mod DB recently, user and Deus Ex fan Xriborg has created the "Lay D Denton Project" which remodels the game's playable agent to be a woman instead of a man. The mod description even says that they went to the trouble of revoicing the character based on the original game's dialogue, though they say it's not a 100% duplication of the script.

The general attitude that's gone into the modification is to preserve the sharp one-liners that fans have come to love from this franchise. After all, Deus Ex has a lot of hidden details and a lot of lore that has made it such a fan favorite over the years, and it seems as though Xriborg did not want to detract from that. It's clear that the "Lay D Denton Project" has been done with careful consideration for the original game, and to keep fans happy, but also to bring it into the modern gaming era. They also say that all pronouns have been adjusted accordingly to match the female Denton.

This thread will draw some ire because of how close it sounds to controversial things, but really apart from the detail required for a bigger game like this and the voice acting required it’s nothing new, and no big deal.

If you look at Rom Hacking sites, people have been doing gender based mods and hacks for years. A common example is Zelda games, where Link is supposed to be the player but they always refer to the character as a male so some people preferred to change that for personal use. If they release that mod for others, fine.

I imagine part of this particular mod is the challenge and scope of it.

Some people will probably install this just to switch up their favourite game and see how it is. The demand for a female Denton will not be high really, this is just a niche project that took more work than your usual text edit mod would.

But... why? What does this add? Why spend so much time for something so meaningless?
The title of the thread and the OP might not have been clear, but this adds a female player option for the player. Typically in role playing games, more character options are better, as then you're able to role play as whichever character you want to. This is generally the point of the RPG genre.

eh, her voice sounds wrong somehow.
I guess its just hard to top the meme power of the original

No shit sherlock. I am talking about replaybility, a point to any of the changes. Seems like a lot of effort to go for a model swap for a character you barely see as is.

Based on the content in the OP, this mod appears to add the ability to replay the game as a female character. In role playing games, playing the game as different characters is often the entire point to replaying the game. In this instance, you're now able to play the game as a female. The option to play the game as the cannonical male JC Denton is not removed with this mod.

You might not have played Deus Ex, but the central character - JC Denton - is featured in every dialogue exchange throughout the entire game. The character has thousands of spoken dialogue options, and the game presents dialogue exchanges with simple shot/reverse shot camera work, allowing your selected character to be seen and heard quite often.

I have played it, but its been about... 20 years? I forgot how often JC is seen via dialogue. Still think the mod is a waste of time and doesn't really provide anything of value.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone get this upset at the mere existence of women. It’s a community mod. You may think it’s a waste of time, but the person that made it didn’t think so. Also, it’s existence doesn’t hurt anyone except you apparently.

It's a mod.

1000's of mods are meaningless unless you want it to be meaningful for your playthrough.

If I can slap on big ole titties to random NPC's in Fallout, someone can play Deux Ex with a female skin.

Edit: jesus fucking christ with some of the replies here. Does anything female and color on a person's skin just trigger everyone nowadays?

Why the fuck are you guys here if everything gaming related ticks you off?

A waste of time, for a mod, made by someone on their own time and accord, released for free for shits and giggles, and you guys are STILL bitching and moaning?

We are literally so far from where we were years ago, that this is basically (slowly but surely) becoming right wing resetera at this point.

I'm starting to hate this place.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
It looks very well made and 100% fitting in with all the original content, I dunno where people find the voice acting so much worse as if there were some oscar worthy performances before, lol, everything will be claimed to hate on such a project I guess 🤷‍♂️

Same for those who hear the npc lines re-recorded with new VA and bland yet (in most cases) only the pronouns were digitally edited, as if they'd redo all their lines of dialogue just because at some random point the character throws a "he" or "mister", lol.

On the one hand it's nice that it's 100% faithful but on the other they also had the opportunity to do all this work and offer something more different and fresh without changing the story/world just by the lines and performance of the actress, like femshep.

Do you think RPGs providing options for the player to role play as a female character is always a waste or time and without value, or, only in this case for Deus Ex?

Thats neat.

A new way to role play.

New voice acting is enough to garantee a new playthrough

Yeah, the atitude here sometimes is pathetic

Any thread with women / lgbt / "representation" in general you already know what to expect. You already know what will trigger people in here.

Same thing at resetera, just with different keywords.

My young daughter loves plating as Peach in the NES/SNES Super Mario Bros. games. It's not that she had minded playing as Mario in any way but her eyes lit up when she realised that she could now play as the princess. I did tell her that it wasn't actually me who did the work but she honestly didn't care. 🤷‍♂️

Seems like a super lore friendly mod. Seems more like Deus Ex than Adam Jenson. I still don't know how any of his stuff was supposed to be Deus Ex as it seemed like a total reboot of the world.

But why? Seriously.
What is this obsession of taking original characters and changing their sex, race, sexual orientation, etc.
Why not put the effort to create good characters, that are new and interesting.

It’s not an official release. Mods can do what they want with their time. Tons of mods will raise the question, “But why?” The answer is always, “Because we can.”

Nobody is forcing a mod down anyone’s throat. This will find its audience. All the others can safely ignore this.

I know it's a mod. That's not what I asked.
What I asked is why this trend in the all the entertainment industries.
Why change previously established characters, instead of creating new?

So, you're asking a developer of a mod for a 20 year old game to explain a trend in the modern entertainment industry? Is this a serious post?

It's a open question, made on an public forum.
Quite clearly, not a question for the developer.
