Halo Infinite leaks reveal new Forge mode will have full scripting system

Although Forge won’t be included at Halo Infinite’s launch, new leaks have revealed just how powerful the revamped toolkit might be, as a full-fledged scripting system has been uncovered.

We’re just nine weeks out from the launch of Halo Infinite, 343’s latest attempt at reinvigorating the beloved FPS franchise after a six-year break. While multiplayer is on its way alongside the solo portion of Infinite’s upcoming campaign, a few key features will be missing on day one.

Namely, Forge has been delayed indefinitely. The popular feature has been present in the last four mainline titles and while it is in the works, there’s no telling when it may arrive in Infinite.

Despite this, leaks have spilled out early that appear to reveal the complexity of 343’s ambitious Forge upgrade. Alongside the traditional map and mode design features, Infinite’s Forge seemingly comes with its own scripting system.

Leaked images hit social media on October 8, providing a first look at the new iteration of Forge. These pictures revealed an intricate series of ‘nodes’ as the creator established their own game logic with an intricate scripting system.

Controller inputs on-screen allow users to interact with the ‘Node Graph,’ thereby designing more nuanced experiences than ever before.

Similar to the Workshop in Overwatch or even the likes of Garry’s Mod, a scripting system of this kind would give Forge creators more power and control than they’ve ever known since the toolkit was introduced in 2007.

These nodes allow a deeper level of customization, letting players set unique functions, change weapon damage values, or even trigger various animations and effects. Tooltips range from ‘On Game Start’ to ‘On Player Killed’ and just about everything in between. These can all enable unique functions at specific intervals with the right nodes in place.

At the base level, players could design modes that were once impossible in earlier iterations of the Forge. But at the higher level, creators that really have a knack for game development and scripting tools could essentially create entirely new levels and tell their own stories in the Halo universe.

For all we know, inventive Halo players could even craft their own huge battle royale game modes before 343 Industries gets around to it.

Possibilities are all but endless with players able to manually change logic and create their own systems. If these leaks hold true, Infinite’s Forge would unquestionably be the most powerful creative toolset the community has seen to date.

For the time being, however, there’s no telling if this intricate system will reach the full game. Forge has no set release date in Infinite, meaning we might not hear anything further for a good while yet.

This looks amazing, but I still can't help but feel like 343I needs a whole new way of communicating. If they'd said: "we're delaying forge, but...." with the scope and options of new forge (if these leaks are true of course) the reception to the news would've been a lot less negative, because people know the wait'll probably be worth it.

There's just so much we still don't know about the game even tho we're around 2 months before the game releases. The flight was fantastic, but I can't help but feel like 343I could've done a lot more to built hype for the game. Let's hope they break campaign silence very soon and keep releasing a steady stream of content after next weeks comp settings reveal.

Delay is totally understandable if that's the scope they're aiming for - LBP or Dreams-style scripting in a Halo MP game? That's not just a massive amount of potential for fun and content, that's a heck of a technical achievement as well. I wonder if it'll be available on the Xbone, or if it'll be a next-gen only feature?

It might have certain features turned off on the XB1. Or a much lower budget.

Impressive can’t wait to see what the community delivers! Reminds me of UT, Red Faction, all the old multiplayer games that had insane map support you just don’t see anymore.

Lets be honest tho. Majority, if not all of the ones "concerned" don't own an an Xbox.

I like forge and all but the delay never bothered me. But if this is legit, this is impressive.

On this site (new, but I've been lurking for years) that may be true, but, as a huge Halo fan that's played both casual and comp. Halo for thousands of hours, the news was still very disappointing. Now I personally don't forge nor use Co-op campaign, but I want Halo: Infinite to be the true revival of a once great franchise and I want the game to succeed. I want the game to have a great release with loads of content to please every group of Halo fan. Co-op campaign and forge not beeing there at launch give me the Halo 5 launch creeps. Don't get me wrong, Halo 5 from 2017 onward is my favorite Halo of all time (comp settings, not slayer settings), but that game launched in a dire state without BTB, Forge, and more. I don't want 343I to make that same mistake again, even tho the game appears to be in a way better state than release Halo 5 ever was.

My point is: we as Halo fans have all the reason to be critical towards 343I, even tho they are doing a hell of a lot right (the flight was amazing, apart from the dreaded Bloom and OP Assault Rifle). Especially when compared to Battlefield and COD at the moment. I am still a bit worried about the release as we've not seen actual open world campaign footage since craiggate and have no clue about maps, game types, comp settings, and so fort although I am kind of going off topic here.

This is intresting, would allow for things closer to new game modes in the vein of Garry Mod. Not quite as complex due to the limit on assets but still I'm sure someone will make a crack at remaking Trouble in Terroist Town.

I will be honest I have had no intrest in a Halo game after how appalling 343i has been with the franchise but if there giving the tools to players so that they can create there own fun, I might bother to download it on gamepass now.

They delayed content in order to make the tools for the players to make all the content

(The community does make the best content)

Im starting to hate Forge because no matter how many features they drop in - the maps will still never look as good as officially made ones. Its basically a ticket for 343 (even Bungie when Reach was out) to be lazy.

Once Forge releases, 343 will basically stop making maps and let the community make the rest. On paper - you would think this is a good thing but its not. Anyone whos played Halo 5, or MCC Reach+Halo 2 Anniversary will know how many ugly ass disgusting looking Forge maps are forced into official matchmaking.

This is actually quite amazing to have in a console FPS 🤩. I hope it is not PC exclusive.

In only care about the single player campaign, I am concerned that they only talk about the multiplayer....

Only a matter of time and skill someone makes a custom Battle Royale mode for Infinite if 343 don't introduce a seperate dedicated mode.

if forge is going to be that good than im for sure buying a series x

this is huge
Yeah that’s actually very impressive. Players will create some unbelievable maps and maybe even new gametypes with this new Forge mode. The creativity of the Halo community always impressed ever since the Halo 3 days

Wow. That's honestly very cool.

This makes the delay a lot less annoying. I didn't think they would honestly go into that kind of depth but that is pretty exciting.

i switched to ps4 and have been with playstation for a while. but trust me when i say some of my most hilarious and best gaming moments were from halo 3 custom games. nothing since then has ever gave me that kind of enjoyment. at least infinite feels a lot like classic halo so im happy to get an xbox and try it out. the good days are coming back lol.

I met so many people over Xbox live playing Halo 2 online. The best times were definitely Halo 2 and Halo 3. Pretty much everyone in school played Halo 3 like 70% of my friends lol. One time I even came in clutch to win a game on The Pit or maybe it was some other map but I took over and one classmate was so impressed he bought me a huge chocolate chip muffin and a carton of chocolate milk several months after the game lmao

Fans are probably going to take Infinite to new heights with Forge. I hope the Forge mode ends up being free as well, so that everyone can create

Scripting tools will inevitably suck me in and I will spend hours designing something before I realize it’s too much work, will never be finished, and then abandon it.

User creation tool Forge, meanwhile, wasn't supposed to hit Halo Infinite until Season 3 at the earliest - or what would have been about six months after launch.
...
And it's a similar situation for Forge mode, which may not launch until late summer next year at the earliest.

"At the time that we talked about campaign co-op and Forge I said our goal is to ship campaign co-op in Season 2 and our goal is to ship Forge with Season 3," Staten said.

"Yes, we are extending Season 1. So our goal still remains what I said before, which is to ship campaign co-op with Season 2 and Forge with Season 3. But those remain goals. Those remain targets. And we can't commit to any hard dates right now, because as we're seeing with this multiplayer beta, other things might move up in the priority stack for us.
...
"It's going to be a constant challenge to address some of those bigger rocks that I know players have completely legitimate feedback about," Staten said. "But we've got a couple big things that we still have to deliver to fans: campaign co-op and our Forge toolset are really big promises that we've made that we need to make good on."
