Metroid Dread Reviews

The negative scores seem to be focused on "frustration" with controls which is a weird thing. I can't imagine this game controls any different than Samus Returns or other 2D Metroids and if anything it looks like it'd be even more fluid with 60fps as well.

Gamesradar's comment on the controls:
They will force you to navigate cramped environments, push through the occasional bout of frame-rate slowdown, and reconcile with Metroid Dread's hand-cramping controls – so overburdened is this game with inputs.
...
There's an overcomplication of Metroid's well-honed systems of progression, traversal, and combat here. Truth be told, the GBA and SNES offered a finer degree of control with far fewer available inputs and were all the more enjoyable because of it. Whether you're trying to trigger a parry against a room-sized boss, running for your life from a robotic E.M.M.I. that wields a one-hit kill mechanic, or otherwise struggling with the controls to unleash defensive Screw Attacks and Missile salvos, it's hard not to wonder why the Dread's action leanings ended up this way.
Sounds like they they wanted a simpler control scheme to accommodate the gameplay mechanics (namely the parry and EMMI encounters).

Not much the parry system is a little tedious, but Dread improves on its weaknesses and pretty much destroys it in every way imaginable.
I think a lot of it also has to do with how dumb downed the gameplay was due to the parry mechanic making the game easier. And with that fan made remake of M2 floating around, i feel people were just disappointed that the official remake just wasnt what they wanted (kinda like how banjo nuts and bolts isnt a terrible game in itself but it is a terrible sequel to tooie)

Awesome scores! Most really positive 👍 even the lowest rated reviews talk highly about the EMMI encounters and story wich is something i was concerned about.

Seems like the negatives are some repetition problems with similar frustrating' boss battles(a problem in Samus Returns as well, but at least less bad here says Gamespot) and lack of originality in places, but overall its an entry worthy of the name METROID and a must play for any Metroidvania fan. Can't wait!

I'm perfectly fine with the game being 9 hours or less, but my normal first playthrough of Samus Returns took 13 I think. Seems strange this game would be significantly less than that. GameSpot always bringing the weird shit.

Not for me. Didn’t own a SNES and didn’t play Super Metroid until Switch Online was a thing.
So what makes it the best? Level design, locations of secrets? I just think it'll be an interesting conversation to have once people get their hands on this game and inevitably try to rank them.

Does it stay at 60fps?
Nintendo Life: It's slick, fast-paced stuff that never drops a frame as it delivers breathlessly exciting encounters.

WellPlayed AU: It runs like a dream for the most part, save at least one bout of slowdown during a particularly hectic encounter.

MyNintendoNews: However, we noticed the odd dip in frames when the screen was cluttered with enemies . . . Things took a slight hit in only a handful of cutscenes, too. Rest assured, it didn’t impede on our experience and, for many fans, it will go largely unnoticed.

For context I’ve played:

Metroid
Super Metroid
Prime 1-3
Zero Mission
Fusion

These games are all about level design and atmosphere and I think only Prime 1 has it beat so far. The map is fantastic, the secrets are off the charts, the soundtrack may be the best in the series.

I didn’t say that it’s impossible to beat a SNES game. I said that so far, this one hasn’t. I’ve enjoyed/loved every game in this series I’ve played, and my collectors edition of Dread is in the mail, so the Nintendo defense team can stand down, they don’t need the help. People are not irrational for being a little skeptical that this developer is going to topple some of the best games ever made.

Nice! Can't wait to play this on Friday. Looks like another GOTY contender. It's been a pretty quiet year so hopefully Metroid Dread gets more time in the spotlight.

I've never really played a Metroid game before, do they usually have unlockable costumes?
I am not really a fan of her design tbh I prefer the bodysuit a lot more it looks sleeker and more agile imo.

The gameplay looks fun tho.

Looks like it's getting some pretty good scores. The negative scores seem to be focused on "frustration" with controls which is a weird thing. Excited to jump in! Now if only I can find an OLED too :(
Is it really that hard to find one OLED where you live? I just bought one yesterday through an online retailer and they had like 100+ available.

I could not possibly disagree more with your Zero Mission assessment, it’s an amazingly better game than the original.
Zero Mission is leagues above the original with it's confusing and repetitive level design and irritating design choices. not to mention the game is hard as fuck before you get the screw attack and it's not the good type of hard. no map, no save rooms, no way to regenerate health unless you tediously farm the health from enemies etc etc.

it's one Nintendo game that didn't age well at all. Zero Mission gets rid of all of this.

Higher than I expected, it always looked rather uninspired to me (and also like an up-ported 3DS game).

So someone said you can restart right outside the boss encounter when you die rather than going back to save point, does that apply generally for the game? As in, it autosaves as you explore/before big encounters and manual saving is really only for when you turn the game off?

I ain;t sure, maybe it is specific to Emmi boss fight as those happen without a chance to save

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Can't wait for my copy to arrive on Friday. Could be playing it already but nah, I enjoy the hype of waiting for my copy to arrive. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Runs perfect in yuzu with vulkan 🙌
Glad to read that! So nice that Switch emulation is coming out as well as it does, it might be my gotto way of playing game that doesn't run smooth on the Switch.

I haven't played Zero Mission, Fusion and Samus Returns. Are they worth playing?
Fusion is. I bought zero mission but never played it and didn't get Samus returns at all. I remember fusion putting up more of a fight than I expected.

I have no time for games that don't let you start from a boss battle again.

I'm not 8 years old with unlimited time anymore

I’m just stoked there’s a new, good Metroid out. It’s been a minute.
I was sold on it just for that fact. I know the past few Metroid games were disappointing for a number of reasons, but it's been damn near 20 years since I played fusion and I haven't touched a 2D Metroid since. Got to give it a try.

I knew that Mercury Steam would deliver

Im one of those weirdos who loved Samus Returns, so
Right. I didn't play Samus Returns but I've always thought that Mercury Steam is a good studio that gets dog piled for whatever reason. I only played Castlevania LOS but I thought that was a great game. I guess what I'm getting at is, they usually work with IPs that aren't their own but seem to always do a quality job, I know fans are torn over certain things they've released but it's not like their games are ugly or filled with jank.
