Sony's focus on multiplayer is dissapointing

It seems the future of PlayStation we have a ton of multiplayer investment. For someone who hates most multiplayer games and didn't get I to Starhawk, Resistance, Killzone and etc this is quite dissapointing.

We have the following based on official announcements, leaks and rumours
Deviation FPS game - Devs of Black Ops
FireWalk FPS game - Devs of Titanfall
Horizon multiplayer game
Guerilla Games 2nd project to be multiplayer - could be the same Horizon multiplayer game or something else
FireSprite Multiplayer game - Based on job positions
Factions - became its own thing and more ambitious so more resources put into this
Arrowhead next game - Sony published their previous game so likely to invest in this
Twisted Metal F2P - rumoured to be in development by Lucid
London Studio multiplayer game - they are hiring for a online game
inSomniac multiplayer game - they are hiring for a online game

That's a ton of investment for online games and I would have oreffered the resources to be double down on AAA singleplayer games. We already had Destruction Allstars which flopped. Sony has had issues previously creating a big online presence in a game where servers are shut or community is dead, just look at Starhawk, Twisted Metal, Resistance 3, Killzone 3 and etc. We are at a time where only a few online games succeed as the competition is strong and people don't have time to focus on a few online games at a time which leaves many online games being abandoned. There are some positives I'm glad Gran Turismo 7 is bringing back a decent singplelayer campaign. Ragnarok, Wolverine and etc all will be great singleplayer games. But with VR and multiplayer games which are 2 things I'm not interested in it seems the big singplelayer AAA games will be few and far between from eachother. And Sony could have upped the investment in more singplelayer games instead of multiplayer games which history has shown usually flop and get abandoned.

Since most of those are as you mentioned “just rumors”, I’d relax a bit and not worry about Sony turning into a multiplayer focused company.

I care more about waiting another 3 years to see something truly “next-Gen” come out due to their extended cross-gen development plans.

They are games. For gamers. Who play games. A lot of times together. Are you seriously complaining that Sony is making additional investments to increase the variety of genres available on their platform? I really don't understand the anti social mindset of seemingly so many Sony fans that want to sit alone in the dark 24/7 playing only single player games talking to themselves and pretending other people don't exist. Very strange behavior. Ive suffered from severe social anxiety pretty much my entire life but I can still appreciate other people having fun with things.

Sony hasn't done a 1st party multiplayer game in 10 years and soon as they make partnerships and invest into a much needed Multiplayer space you are here crying about it.

Sony needs to do MP and it won't affect their SP output either. Plenty of SP development happening and IPs.

So spare me, it's been 10 years since they did anything with their MP IPs new or old.

I can understand being disappointed by the direction. I was disappointed in Sonys single player focus during the PS4 generation.

That being said, you don't compete with GamePass by releasing single player games. Multiplayer is taking over and Sony knows it needs to be leading that charge. I thought the built in mic on the DualSense was a sign that Sonys focus was going in the right direction for PS5.

High risk high reward strategy is fun to watch.

? What do they need to compete with gamepass for? They're still winning handily last looked. I like gamepass myself but it's not the threat some make it out to be.

On the subject. The variety is good. We are still going to get sp focused games.

They are making acquisitions and their studios are growing to increase output not only to big single player games, but also multiplayer.

Their last showcase brought two big single player games announcements as Spider 2 and Wolverine. There is no need to concern.

Its the one area Sony extremely lacks in compared to MS's Multiplayer output, they are trying to rectify that, hopefully with another WarHawk title

I suspect Sony views GamePass as a real threat. The fact that Sony is winning before Microsoft's 24 developers start cooking doesn't mean a whole lot. The premise was basically created to counter Sonys strength of providing 1 or 2 buzzworthy titles a year. GamePass provides a perpetual buzz throughout the year now that Microsoft can start feeding it games all the time.

2,000+ hour, social, multiplayer games counters the GamePass strategy nicely.

I'm hoping the idea is that multiplayer whales help subsidize the AAA single player experiences SONY is known to have...
I don't play online so, if this isn't the case, it'll be my back catalog for the rest of time :)

Multiplayer has been a massive weakness for Sony for awhile so them working on it this gen is a good thing. I didn't expect them to go so hard though. I was only expecting them to create or buy some studios who mainly focus on those types of games and leave their single player third person cinematic studios to continue making those types of games.

Everyone have seen the Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone numbers (but also Sea of Thieves and Destiny ones, although smaller).

It is perfectly normal that Sony wants to give a try at creating its own multiplayer sensation.

Funny, I think they are laser focus on their AAA single-player experiences with great technical level and overall production value.

As long as all their AAA studios keep making awesome SP adventures - and I see no signs of that changing - I'm fine with them having some MP side projects. Let the microtransaction suckers fund the development of the next great Sony AAA exclusives.

As long as they keep the multiplayer games separate from the single player games I am fine with it.

sort of agree with op
Their single player stuff is fantastic…however most of it I never play again once I beat it

a couple more gaas titles and they would almost have the perfect spread

What I would focus on

a tactical shooter like socom ..bring this back but in an esport way…sort of like siege but try and make it less attractive to toxic shits

Sony needs some sort of adventure/fantasy build type game that appeals to kids like minecraft/roblox

action shooter….Sony don’t have a halo/gears type game….as much as people say killzone is one….let’s be honest….killzone is shit…They need a new shooter ip…make it fun…make it fast but don’t recycle something like killzone or resistance

Sony took risks like MAG in the ps3 era and that was fantastic

wild idea
Days gone 2 but instead of a single player focused game it’s a multiplayer type game with a story narrative which has you building up communities and raiding other places in a pvp/pve type environment

if they had those 3 types of games it would immediately broad their library and compliment their other multiplayer titles like GT

Are TLOU, the Unchated games, Sackboy and GoT multiplayer games? Most of the games mentioned in the OP we know they feature multiplayer, but we don't know if htey are multiplayer focused games. Many Sony games feature multiplayer but as something secondary.

Then London Studio and Firesprite are rumored to be working together in an Horizon VR game, so if true 3 projects of the list would be the same. And the Arrowhead and Twisted Metal games probably don't exist (the Arrowhead game exists but maybe not published by Sony).

This is mind blowing people are disappointed about crap that hasn’t even been announced. How can you see the games Sony have announced and their seriously strong push in single players games to a fault and be disappointed. It’s literally all they do. Let the try something else while still making the games you like. Sheesh…..

Sony banked an entire generation on single player games. Let them at least try and diversify before getting disappointed about stuff you know zero about.

Sony's entire output last gen was SP only. What focus on multiplayer? Some next gen games that havent even been announced?

All those partnerships are basically timed exclusives anyway. Sony isnt making those games. Third party devs are.

You have to look at their output since the PS4 launched and only KZSF and Uncharted 4 have had multiplayer. Even TLOU2 launched without it. Their output this gen has been the same. Ratchet, Returnal, Demon Souls, Horizon FW, GoW, Spiderman, Wolverine. None of the announced games from Sony first party are mp.

Really, what focus? If anything they have completely neglected a market that is easily the biggest market on consoles since Halo launched 2 decades ago. Having B teams at Insomniac, ND and GG make some mp games that we havent even seen isnt really doubling down on MP. It's anything but.

Can you share this focus from Somy in multiplayer? Because all I see for now is strong single-player experiences.

I’m waiting the best of TLOU with Factions MP but nothing happened.

I’m worried more about the non-existent multiplayer games from Sony on PS5.

Yeap we are in the waiting but they could give us more…

Killzone 2 MP reboot or something like.
Why not try MAG again now that it has the hardware to support that vision?

We have a lot os single-player games coming from Sony and I love it but I really want some diversity… they needs some MP focused games.

It's better to focus on one thing you're good at. Instead of focusing on many things at same time and sucking on all of them.

That being said I enjoyed Legends recently even tho SP could done much more. It still great I enjoyed all modes specially survivors but would've been interesting to see what they could do if they did it ala RDO or GTAO. Like online multiplayer open world game with GOT Legends setting, I get that its not that easy but I think it has some huge potential. Game already has super solid base, great gameplay awesome world map ect.

They will increase their focus, but I don't expect them to lose focus on single-player games. I mean, those are their cash cows. I expect they'll all include a multiplayer mode going forward though. As Manabyte mentioned, it just makes the most financial sense.

Nooo steer away from killzone…it’s fucking trash (my personal opinion ..before u attack me)

they need to take risk like they did with the ps3
Mag was an unfortunate title due to its timing but there was nothing like it at the time and it took almost 10 years to get something in the same scale

We need something left field and fresh

Knee jerk reaction much?

All of Sony's Multiplayer investment are organically made from their single player titles. Your still getting Horizon, God of war, spiderman 2, Wolverine, More Ghosts, Possible more Sly from recent rumor, more Souls in bloodborne remaster and possible sequel. From Software has another Exclusive they are working on for Sony which could be Bloodborne 2 with Bluepoint taking development point with From software story/narrative direction.

You are getting a new IP from Bend, more last of us and a new IP from Naughty dog. I mean what more do you want? Look at launch? Returnal, Demons souls, Sackboy, astro, miles, ratchet? On top of signed games like deathloop, Kena. Coming soon Sifu, Stray?
I mean there's so much single player stuff. Also Firesprite is working on with Fabrik VR Horizon game thats single player.

Everyone complained last gen because 85% of their output was campaign/single player games. Now they are adding optional co-op in ghost, possible co-op in insomniac marvel universe or a xmen game? Like what do you want them to do?
Not diversify? Every Xbox thread that brings up sony talks about what your talking about? Now that Sony is making both and having what looks like more balanced output that doesnt hinder current campaign/single player output your complaining?

They cant win can they.

You got it the wrong way, Sony is the masterchef here.
Pots are full, producing award winning delicacies like never before.

This thread is about Sony offering not the competitions subscription.

OT:
It's good time to create some MP games, we need release date for TLOU2 factions!
