Demon's Souls (PS5) Sold Over 1.4 Million Units

Going into deciding to remake Demon Souls, do you really think Sony was ignorant to what the game would cost to make or how many copies it was expected to sell? Come on. This is the third time Sony has put money behind a Souls game. Sony has plenty of historical data in these games. Sony has explicitly said in the past that their expectations are NOT for every game to make money so no, you don't have to worry about "future installments". Demon Souls Remake did well enough that Sony bought Bluepoint. I can't think of a better way of expressing their satisfaction with the results.

I suspect a few things went into their decision to greenlight the Demons Souls Remake...

1. Sony probably thought of Bluepoint as an acquisition target for a while. Sony approaches Bluepoint with the following premise - "You remake Demons Souls for us and we'll staff you up so you can become a legit studio. That way, you can create an original IP afterwards."

2. Sony probably isn't oblivious to the fandom Bloodborne seems to be retaining. They probably thought, if Bloodborne sold 2 million, maybe we can market DS as the showpiece PS5 launch title and get 2.5 - 3 million sales in year one. Games fail to reach expectations all the time.

Put 1 and 2 together and it seems to make some sense.

And Sony didn't buy Bluepoint because of Demons Souls. Sony bought Bluepoint because they view them as a talented, trustworthy studio who's hopefully going to produce great games for PlayStation over the next 20+ years. (Though, maybe we're saying the same thing here)

I don't disagree with anything you've said.

How about we cherish what we have for now and stop being concerned about the future.

Oh yeah I'm going to troll so hard so prepare yourself.

Many people were asking for a remake of Demon Souls. While some have issues with the change in art direction many are happy that the game got remade. Not only that but it's a pretty good remake by Bluepoint in my opinion. Definitely a game I will pick up when I get my PS5.

It's great to see how well the game sold and that number will continue to rise as more people are able to buy the system. There's some who are downplaying the number sold, but it's not always just about copies sold or how much money a game makes. Sony has spoken about this before and I'm glad they have that viewpoint. Otherwise, I may never have had the chance to play some of my favourite games of all time like Demon's Souls (PS3) and Bloodborne. And when I can get a PS5, Demon's Souls is the first game I'll buy.

It's funny.

Epic deliberately left the Gears of War franchise because each game seemingly had a sales ceiling and the cost to make each game kept rising.

Demons Souls sells half of the worst selling Gears of War game (3.2 million vs 1.4 million), and it's probably more expensive to make considering it's a PS5 exclusive.

But let's throw a parade for Bluepoint? Fandom is so bizarre.
Demon’s Souls costs more than Gears? 😂😂😂

While I do believe it's a great game for me it's was more about showing off the power of the system than releasing a remake of a loved title. Sony usually has something at launch that does this. With the PS4 I believe it was Killzone ShadowFall.

I've also read that some games are used to convince people to buy the system itself. I can see the reason you stated and also the idea that a DeS remake would attract Souls fans towards the PS5 and PS ecosystem too. Souls is not on the level of the biggest franchises out there, but the fanbase has grown steadily throughout the years and it's an incredibly dedicated fanbase, as well.

How much do you think both games cost?
Gears?

1: $16m
3: $48-60m
4: > $100m
Judgement: $60m

Both the original costed less than Gears 1 and Demon’s Souls (2020) costed less than the latest Gears.

Epic give up on Gears because even having the development cost increasing the game could only made $100m.

Gears 1: $100m revenue
Judgement: $100m revenue

They started very profitable but at the end it was only break even.

To put in perspective Demon’s Souls original was already profitable selling way less than 1 million copies.

PS. Why not compare Gears budget with Uncharted… they are more like to like and devs put more money into it:

U1: $20m
U2: $20m
U3: $25m

I wonder why Gears budget started lower and increased a lot with each sequel while Ucharted started high but stabilized.

Where are you getting your Demons Souls Remake budget from?

Demons has mo cap, a live orchestra and super cutting edge next gen graphics. These kind of games are the reason next gen games cost more.

I'm sure it cost a pretty penny.

Social media rewards extreme opinions. Parade for Sony vs Bluepoint firings incoming. It's probably most appropriate to view Demons Souls numbers as...

just-ok-meh.gif
and your posting in this thread as trolling....

Demon's Souls Remake has the best graphics I've seen yet on the PS5, and Bluepoint has a lot of technical skill. It will be interesting to see what they'll be able to do when designing their own game though.

I thought it would have done better. 1.4 millions is okay for a launch game but for all of the hype and press surrounding the game I would have figured it would have at least have done like 2 million at launch window.

PS. I still remember some saying the game was not selling even it being in the best sellers in PS chartz lol

1.4 million is what an indie game sells this days though. Gaming has become so big that for a game to be a real success it must sell 5 million at the very least. More like 10 million.

Yep. With all the press pushing this game 1.4 million is a really really low figure, I would even say it's a failure.
Two words: Install base.
PS5 sold like 8 million until last April so no, install base is not an excuse.

Demon's Souls is a niche title in an already niche genre of games. Even Souls veterans will say that Demons has probably the most convoluted systems of any FROM game. Selling over 1 million copies in less than a year, for this game, is really solid.

You are crazy with assumptions.

Look at Bloodborne sales for example.
I mean look at Dark Souls sales in PlayStation.

And the only Indies that sells over 1 million on PlayStation are the huge successful ones… and there are very few of them.

If the game made $80 million within the first year and the development cost was $50 million, then how is it not a success?

You're throwing random figures around which shows you don't know what you're talking about.

Look up the total Dark Souls series sales and tell me they are niche.

not surprising. it's a remaster of a classic game and it's not like PS5 owners have a great selection of games to be playing right now.

It's not what's expected from it though. It's like those movies that make a lot of money but not the return of investment they were expecting so there no second part.

Yeh it was such a bad return on investment that it led to them acquiring the studio.

I'm impressed. Good shit to Bluepoint for this. I'm hoping the PC port rumor is real so they can bring that sweet Boletaria goodness to Steam.
