That's fantastic information, really appreciate it

Am i wrong in thinking fear 1 also had those shadows? Or am i mistaken.. or are you talking about that gen

To this day i think garret looks awesome in deadly shadows
Garret looks amazing in Deadly Shadows. And Deadly Shadows overall still looks amazing. Same with FEAR. Stencil shadows (perfectly mapped to geometry) were just something else.

FEAR also has amazing shadows, but Doom 3 is simply more nuanced and has ... more of them. All the time. And more lights that makes the shadows dance in multiple ways all the time.

I think it's incredible that both games were made available for the Xbox, which was nothing short of a technological marvel that set the stage for consoles to come.

Riddick and Wreckless are two more examples of things that are just stunning for that generation of machines to pull off.

I've had both of them on Xbox at some point. Doom 3 was a technical marvel, and HL2 was probably impressive as well but I played the PC version a lot and the Xbox version obviously couldn't compete.

In some ways Xbox Doom 3 is better than the remaster.

Last weekend I picked up Doom 3 and Half Life 2 at a retro shop for the OG XBOX, been wanting to play these for a while to see how they translate to console and what they look like on a CRT.

I've put a few hours into Doom 3 and it's an awesome port. I love having the original flashlight mechanic, really adds nuance to the gameplay and is an awesome gameplay mechanic. I love the lighting effect when you attack an enemy with the flashlight, cause as the light moves away from the enemy with your attack, things get really dark and the enemy isn't visible. Really clever and helps to make things feel frantic.

I only played a few minutes of Half Life 2 but the framerate seems worse than Doom 3, it wasn't terrible though.

I've played probably half of each game via the Orange Box and BFG edition but didn't beat either. I'm thinking the XBOX versions are going to be the ones I actually complete.

One thing I'd really like to do is get system link with my brother and play through Doom 3's coop campaign, just seems like it'd be insanely fun.

So what say you Gaf? Did you get these games back in the day and play the shit out of them? Were you a PC warrior who looked down on these inferior ports?

Yes.

Xbox's PC ports were the best thing. I always forget Half Life 2 but KotoR, Deus Ex: IW, fuggin' Morrowind, Doom 3, HL2, etc

I had never experienced gaming like that as a Nintendo fanboy at the time and it absolutely shaped me into the PC stan I am today

Loooove my OG Xbox still. So many hidden gems

Have fun!!

Stalker and its expansions are up there too.
15 years later I'm still mad that Oblivion's shadows were downgraded.
BLACK came very late but that also had pretty cool graphics.. smoke and mirrors mostly but at the time they were stylish and dramatic

This video doesn't show the opening level, in which you fight across a darkened farmland, from memory.. it really shone in that one

wtf, I freakin owned an Xbox and I had no idea there was a Half-life 2 port. How in the hell did I not know about this, I don't remember print coverage or anything.

Does XSX enhance them?

Great choices and mentions in the thread. Amazing machine. I fondly remember playing co-op through RtCW in a whole night. Also countless hours enjoying DoA, Xtreme Beach Volleyball, KotoR, Morrowind, Jade Empire, MechAssault, Timesplitters 2 &3, Dynasty Warriors(hell it'd turn me into the Musou guy I am now). Man there are so many more too. Enclave also holds a special place in my heart. Rallysport Challenge, NFL2k5 the last football game I ever bought. From Software's Otogi games are also great. Man... Oh yeah custom soundtracks in so many games too.

The Original Xbox versions of Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 are not part of the Backwards Compatibility 2.0 program (They're compatible on the 360's version of BC).
The X360 versions of those games are part of the Backwards Compatibility library, but they don't receive any additional enhancements over their original state (they were technically already remasters).
