PS5 reaches 1 million units sold in the UK after 39 weeks

3 weeks faster than PS4 thanks to a lot of new consoles in July and August, after slower April, May and June.

September is slower again, as supply is drying up across all of Europe.

Road to 1M :
Wii 38 weeks
PS5 39 weeks
PS4 42 weeks
Nintendo DS 45 weeks
PS3 46 weeks
PS2 50 weeks
XB1 52 weeks
X360 60 weeks

Wow, pretty crazy. So 1/10, soon to be 1/11 was sold in one country alone? They must’ve prioritized UK quite a lot when it comes to their allocation of shipments.

Yes.
Spain is 100k behind PS4 for example.
Overall PS5 is behind PS4 right now and they have already more markets. China for example that didn't launch before 1 1/2 years later during last gen

Important to note that instead of slowing down, it picked up the pace. If Sony could have enough supply, they would destroy records, not just beat them.

This is weird. How did they sold the same as Wii in almost the same timeframe but with so many shortages?

Shortages are in relation to demand, Sony has actually managed to produce a bit more PS5s than PS4, the difference is that at this same point in time you could probably walk into a store and buy a PS4.

They have less chips to make consoles due to...you know...the current pandemic.
Yes and no.
There is correlation, but not that much causation like it's suggested by many. Chip supply issues are not mainly pandemic issues.

Go watch Asia economics on YT about the semiconductor cycle.
The pandemic, short disruption of supply change, the increased demand due to the pandemic, water issues and just in time manufacturing are all contributing.

Just pinning it down to "the pandemic" is a simplification that doesn't do it justice, because the virus and measures taken against it, are not the reason for the chip supply issues

Great results.
Supply is keeping up notwithstanding the semiconductors shortage.
Demand is just crazy with the console still impossibile to find while actually selling faster than PS4.

So, they're buying to play Fifa, but Ghost of Tsushima is the number 2 in august.

Well, the fast ps5 solidify the top position, the fast cross gens will die. Hope for the best.

Actually… no.

The main supply issue with Sony’s PS5 is the AMD’s APU that is produced by TSMC.

So the players that can affect the disponibility for PS5’s APU production are Apple, nVidia, AMD, etc… and not these car’s chip players that uses another company to produce the chips.

2021 TSMC production is already split… Sony has 80k wafers to produce PS5’s APU… that means around 16-18m chips produced in 2021 (of course the number of defectives can affect the overall number).

For 2022 I didn’t read any info yet.

By the way, this article also [finally] answers the question of physical vs. digital when analyzing data from UK boxed sales of game software.

  • Physical sales represent 37% of total software sales, while digital is at 63%.
  • Also, PS4 leads the digital sales by 36.4% (so there goes the theory that PlayStation has a lower digital sales ratio and that's why it leads in physical copy sales).
Digital sales rose 13.6% to 1.17 million units sold, while physical game sales dropped 4.1% to 691,000 units. In digital, PS4 is dominant with a 36.4% market share, while Ubisoft is the biggest digital publisher with 19.4% of the market.

total software sales
I would maybe reword to game sales instead of software sales but that does depend if you could dlc/mtx as a software sales.

I am trying to figure out how big dlc/mtx must be if the total digital split seems to be 80/20 (kinda hard when Nintendo isn't included in the OP article)

DLC/MTX is usually counted as in-game purchases, not software sales. Also, DLC/MTX directly depends on software/game sales and would scale almost linearly.

I am still trying to figure out the difference in ARPU between MS and Sony then, it's not a 2:1 revenue difference which is the console difference (could it just be MS services? or might have that console sales difference wrong as well)
