Ok so I've done some more testing for those of you who care. Obviously I don't include headshots as I don't know the multiplier so I don't want to complicate things.

Pistol: 4/2/3
BR: 2/2/2
AR: 7/5/5
Commando: 4/2/4

Are you new to Halo? If so, you've figured out how shields have worked since the beginning. Once it clicks, the game changes. Congrats on your findings!

Plasma Weapons will pop the shield faster, and almost instantly with a charged Plasma Pistol. Once you pop, uou can then switch to a precision weapon like a Pistol, BR, Commando, or any other semi-auto weapon and pop them once in the head and they should go down.

I've noticed that in Phase 2, the shield lights up where you've done damage to the other player. 3 shots to the body and 1 shot to the head will sometimes drop a player depending on the weapon.

Yeah I played a decent amount of Halo 5 but what threw me for a loop was the little panels lighting up in phase 1. I don't recall that from Halo 5 so I was determined to figure out what it meant.

Ah, yeah, that's a new feedback feature. I love it. But good for you for picking up on that. I think that not understanding how the shields work is the thing that really turn people away. With all the feedback they provide now, hopefully it clicks for others.

Holy shit at that texture work
In the end, what has been said about the Slipspace Engine, its scalability, and the Velocity architecture was all true, it was just a metter of Devs spending more time on it, and starting to take advantage of it, and we are still in the first year of the Life cycle. And yes, the textures work is fantastic, I'm really eager to see the final result of the Single Player Campaign. Oh yeah !

Funny that it has a classic "BXB" melee cancel glitch at the moment from halo 2

Can you guys explain more, what is a melee cancel?

Well, in Halo 2, the moment your melee would register you could press X (reload) to cancel out the remaining animation frames and follow up with another melee instantly. Like a Street Fighter 2 combo

In the same vein you could cancel into a well placed headshot as well (bxr)

In Halo CE you could melee cancel with grenades

Thanks. I'm testing it now and just mashing (in the correct order) melee -- reload -- melee...but it doesn't appear to be working. Do you have to get the timing right? I assume just pressing them rapidly isn't enough?

EDIT: I think I got it, you need to have shot at least one bullet right, so it tries to initiate a genuine reload?

I'm sure it's a different button it's something I'd like to know as well

Perhaps wait until whatever you do registers as a hit first before cancelling I dunno

I figured it out, see my post edit. You have to shoot at least one bullet to get it to work.

In the end it adds some complexity to the gameplay which I like

Holy fuck, when you mash the buttons quickly it goes so fast it's almost comical, like a sped up kung fu movie.

Try it: shoot just one bullet from your gun, then mash melee + reload + melee + reload repeatedly. Sweet jesus. Use both hands to really amp up the speed - so one hand on melee and your other hand on reload.

Don't forget about those headshots tho; it's all about lining up your shots where you think they're going to be.

This game is no longer about shooting for me. It's now a space kung fu game.

Ok I've figured out something new. So if you simply go melee --> reload --> melee, there's a risk you end up reloading your gun eventually. If you want an iron clad way of doing this indefinitely you need to go melee --> reload --> YY (reload cancel) --> repeat.

That's a lot of fucking buttons to press in the heat of the action but if you can master it, it would be hilarious.

Some more testing: you can also do melee --> YY --> repeat.

It works even better as you don't even need to shoot your gun to do this, although it's nowhere near as fast as melee --> reload --> YY (reload cancel) --> repeat. This one goes so fast people might think you're hacking.

This new approach is more practical though, unless you have octopus fingers. This is a lot of fun figuring all this out.

EDIT: ok so my new technique (melee --> YY --> repeat.) doesn't work if you have dropped a weapon and are only carrying one gun. So therefore the other one might be more versatile in some scenarios (although realistically how often do you run around with only one gun).

if anyone has not already heard or seen it, this is a BXB style glitch from halo 2, not BXR like most people say

Hopefully they remove the glitches for the final release.
Thank god for the test yeah.
The community have spotted them and obviously 343i now know they exist and can patch that shit before final release.
In the age of youtube glitches like this will spread like wildfire if not nabbed early.

Halo 2 atleast spreading these glitches between the community was much much slower.

On Topic
The more I play the better this gets.
They really have a banger on their hands with this one.
Hopefully being F2P will keep the community alive for a very long time.
Im wondering what kind of content drops we can expect.

Put a crazy amount of time into the test. Very fun.
Quick notes:
-CTF goes into an overtime round now if the game is tied at time's end. The enitre game resets for a 3 minute overtime round. Very awesome. Not sure what happens if its tied beyond that since we got wrecked in OT.

-I think the AR can be toned down a bit. Since these maps are so cramped, its usually the only weapon you need in this state.

-The BR needs some tweaks, perhaps it needs to fire a touch faster. Its hard to outplay an AR spammer up close now, but maybe thats intended?

-Repulsor-ing people off the side of the map is hilarious. Repulsing Grav hammer users backwards out of their range is fun too.

-You can techinally rocket jump with the repulsor - aiming down or towards walls.

I wasn't holding out much hope of 343 using anything apart from Tier 2 VRS on a cross gen game, hopefully I was wrong.

If all they're using on this game from the more advanced featureset of the console is VRS Tier 2, then I'm just blown away by what I'm seeing on display.

They even seemingly have enough time to give you real-time footprints on metal surfaces. It's all the small things and details, the subtle sparks from specific areas and equipment in the rooms. Long story short, the variety and visual complexity of what I'm seeing is up there with what you see in a top tier singleplayer experience, but we're getting it in multiplayer. With this in mind it's almost insane to consider just how good a since more polished and complete campaign could look.

I've believed for some time that the reason for that strange pop-in being so broken when we saw it, and the way it looked, was likely due to them working on a newer form of texture streaming that they hadn't completely finished developing it. Even DF has implied that they believe Halo Infinite from a while back would possibly be the first game using Sampler Feedback Streaming. I really, really hope we get an inside infinite that actually details the finer details of what the game engine is doing.

Yep, they told us all this December of last year, but many felt it was damage control, and that they really didn't have something as good as what they said they were working on. They had much of this already in the works and in active development, but what they did acknowledge is that they were taking the feedback seriously, and since they have more time to work they would use it to pursue additional opportunities for improvement.

But what's on display here pretty much proves that the time and investment taken to build up the brand new engine has been worth it. If they really manage to bring this together in a way that's looking as good as this but in the campaign, then wow.

Definitely was buffed since last tech preview. I went from barely being able to get a kill with it to never needing to look for another weapon.

I think everything but precision weapons needs to be tuned down, but commando and pistol need to be readjusted with a slightly lower max ROF but higher damage.

So uh, anyway to get access to the preview or am I screwed?
Gameplay looks good and I am itching for a fun FPS.

Vehicle map is way too big for 4 v 4. Honestly retarded decision. Had a match that went 17 - 31 with time running out

Probably won't happen, but they should bring back the sprint system from Halo 5(shields don't recharge while sprinting). Lost a lot of kills by this already.

Played 2 Strongholds matches and lost both, teammates were going for kills instead of caps smh.

If you sign up now on Halo insider, you still have a chance to make the 2nd weekend roll out IIRC.
Did they remove the bar sticking out of people after killing them with it? It was more amusing in flight 1 that a corpse had a giant rebar sticking through them.
Sadly in my use, I did not find anything sticking like that. I want that back, as well if it's gone.

Check how smart the bots are, and these are low level bots. The gun gets stuck with a sticky, and the bot immediately tosses the weapon...

I think it was just good timing of swapping weapons but a hilarious clip

Nah it is perfect for CTF. Maybe too big for slayer but I've only played CTF on it. I actually really enjoyed CTF on this compared the Bazaar. The openness and vehicles make a huge difference.

Have only got slayer on it. Was so slow and boring. CTF should be better since everyone is chasing an objective or at least suppose to.

I think 6 v 6 would fit it better imo.
