So, SPAM actually tastes really good.

I used to think it was just crap, but rice and spam is legit. Made some spam quesadillas tonight and well they tasted amazing.

I hadn't had spam until last week, btw. Used to think it was just straight garbage because of the jokes around it. But man I like it.

Spam is a staple in my house - but usually go with the lite or 25% less sodium ver.
Usually consume a can of spam 25% less one... maybe once in two month or so. Definitely not every day though.

I actually split them up into french-fry sized sticks, and air fry them for 10 min or so. Comes out nice and crispy, goes well as a side dish for any main rice dish.
Also Spam Musubi - very easy and tasty.

Best of all, Korean Budaechigae (Army stew) - now that's a heavenly hearty stuff for cold days - and it's not complete with authentic Spam.
You can replace weiners with other brands (I also use Kielbasa), and even skip some stuff like sliced ham and all - but you cannot skip Spam for that stew.

I've never had Spam. What does it taste like? For some reason I imagine it tastes like hot dogs. Just a big brick of hot dog meat lol.

Never my thing. But yeah, folks are probably spiking the ever hell out of their bodies with the sodium. Yeesh... :messenger_astonished:

Its got a very distinctive taste of its own, can’t really describe it other than really salty canned ham, great with fried potatoes

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.
Spam is fine, it's super salty though. Armour TREET, on the other hand, is fucking disgusting.

Never had it before. I bought some slim packs of Spam during covid-19 in the event of a food shortage, but I never got around to eating any.

We had SPAM with Kraft Dinner (mac and cheese) when I was younger. I still make it some days. We had it on special occasions and you can never take the poor soul of a poor guy.

Man, I remember back in midwest in early 90s in high school.

My best buddy (white) and I (asian) go to local Hyvee, local grocery store there like "Stop & Shop" in NJ, or "Publix"

You know, he wasn't really from the richest family either - actually he's the one who taught me how to eat poor man's instant Ramen Noodle (never had like that before - he would drain the noodle, and sprinkle a bit of powder package on top with bit of butter to melt & mix) - which became another college staple for me back then, as a struggling art student who spent most of his money to paint material, canvas etc & video games.

So we go to this grocery store for me to pickup some food to eat at my dorm (during summer, I took ESL classes in local university). While picking out bunch of long-shelf life stuff - I picked out SPAM, and he picked his favorite, Dirty Moore Beef Stew for his snack.

And we gazed each other and went "How do you eat that stuff! It's gross!"
I tried Dirty Moore Beef Stew upon his request, and it's not as gross as I thought it would be - but I will take SPAM any day over it. Seriously. :) That was one of the biggest culture shock for me back then - that something I grew up loved by everyone around is considered a "gross" product.

Then some show on the cable showed this.

I still am triggered by it! LOL. Spam is good - in moderation, like bacon or anything else in life! :) The jelly part, is little bit gross though.

Man if you ate spam straight out of a can, you're a real trooper. I've never personally known anyone to eat it without frying or baking it.

I had it raw before - and It's not that bad.... it's that jelly part that grosses me out to be honest.
In a pinch, like war time or stranded in a mountain with no fire - I would eat SPAM raw.
Thing about SPAM is it's actually fully cooked within (yes, after it's cooked after it's canned).

Plain and raw it taste like crap, but with a little work u can make tasty things with it.

It's great but yeah, the sodium levels on most types of spam is kind of ridiculous. The reduced/low sodium still has a ton but it's way more manageable and still tastes good.

My uncle hated it. It was all they had in the African front in ww2 and he refused to ever eat it again. I have never had it.

Filo's love that shit, I never ate or tried spam until I met my wife. It's pretty good, she makes them enclosed inside scrambled eggs.

*EDIT*
Like this.

I just made this, It does not look quite the same but it tastes great. I added some spicy sauce to it.

Spam musubi is the one dish that totally won me over it seemed so weird sounding that i knew i had to try it as i love japanese food to start with & this looked like a quirky mix, unfortunately the chances of finding it in the UK is zero so i learned how to make it myself, bought a proper musubi press from a seller on ebay from hawaii and had a go. When spam is fried & glazed in soy sugar & mirin it magically transforms, the saltyness from the spam & soy sauce pairs perfectly with the sushi rice & seaweed.

Probably the greatest use i have found for spam so far but there is a youtuber that tried a load of spam recipes and there's some really good ones from around the world. It's a really versatile staple to have in the cupboard.

Anyone who wants to try here's the vid she has the recipes too

I eat spam all of the time. However, I do monitor what nutrients I take in daily so it just means that I am having a low sodium day in order to justify taking the spam in. Typically stick to the low sodium or the one mixed with chicken. Though all spam is delicious. There is a dish where I am from that just has grounded spam with some seasoning(I forgot the name but it is along the lines of sazon/adobo with some garlic in it) that just makes it so delicious.
