[PS5] Samsung 980 Pro... barely faster than 5,500mb/sec?

Samsung 980 Pro owner here, using the latest firmware. Here's what I get:

That's still not really impressive.

Can’t recommend Samsung products. Their products are garbage just like their phones and all my home appliances.

you sound like an Apple fanboy who us salty that Samsung phones are better than iPhones lol

I still use a Galaxy S7 from 4 years ago and it works almost like new, even the battery is almost perfect still.
so either a Samsung fridge killed your mother or something, or what you're saying is just fanboy bashing

Grow up? Their products are trash. My 4000 dollar Samsung fridge barely makes ice, but it has a nice LCD screen.

Their ice makers constantly fuck up. We manually fix and replace through ordering replacement parts, same with the washer dryer combo. We do all the repairs ourselves!

Yo, yeah wtf. My twin door 3 layer samsung fridge and the ice maker freezes up constantly. About to get a new fridge as it’s about 4yo already and this issue is ridiculous. But is there a fix?

Turns out the benchmark is just shit based on DF's latest video, I wouldn't worry about it, Op.

It's not just Samsung. New refrigerators look great but are junk compared to how they used to be built, like everything else I guess. Since I moved I've had two fridges, from two different brands, and the fucking ice makers are what always breaks first. I also have one from when I was a kid that still works like brand new.

I suspect it’s related to the ice making component being inside the fridge instead of the freezer. Warmer air gets in and shit melts / freezes in a viscous circle. Just a theory.

well I have the 980 pro and am waiting on a heatsink to arrive before I install it and now I'm slightly concerned. Its my fist ssd and looking at the label it appears to have been manufactured August 2021 so Im hoping the firmware fix is on it. No way for me to tell since my pc doesnt have a m.2 slot on it.

And their near bulletproof SSDs?
Which arent build by the same factory that builds their frikken fridges?

You are sounding dumber by the second.

Sorry I struck a nerve. However, they have a quality control issue.

PS. In reference to your sentence. You should have used “aren’t built” instead of “aren’t build”.

Go in a PC Shop and tell them to update the firmware for you. Should not take longer than two minutes.

Or ask a friend with a PC to do It for you.
People these days.🙄😒

You really need a PC motherboard with two M.2 connectors. My PC has got only one M.2 connector and it's already in use. In my case a simple firmware update is a real hassle. I could put the 980 Pro in my PC, install Windows on it and run the firmware updater, or I could try to boot Linux from a USB drive and update the firmware using this guide (https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/upgrade-update-samsung-ssd-firmware/)

In my case it's going to take quite a bit longer than two minutes to update the firmware.

You can buy an external enclosure and hook it up through USB.

Buying an external enclosure for a one time user case: updating the firmware of my Samsung 980 Pro?

Maybe you should read the comment properly. I said how fast It can be If he goes into a PC Shop/ repair Shop.

I just had to remove my GPU and Install the firmware update even it was not really necessary for my SN850. Took me about five minutes.

Maybe it's overheating in ps5 and throtling speed? If i remember correctly Samsung drives run pretty hot.
The benchmark comes up as soon as you install and format it, it hasn't been used. The benchmark comes up within seconds so probably not as accurate as others. The Samsung benchmark software takes a couple of minutes in my pc

I’m in the same boat as you

The firmware came out in April, if your device was made in July or August, it probably has the latest firmware update on it. Also, I've read that updating the firmware doesn't improve speeds and you get different speeds each time you test it. The test is very short too, so it's hard to get an accurate number. Sony should include a benchmarking tool in the settings app where you can see how your drive is actually performing.

I also wish there was a way to benchmark the actual stock SSD to see what reading that gets.

will state it again... any SSD is a huge upgrade over an old HDD.
old ssd 600mb/s is fucking fast.. so is 2500 so is 3000

stop wasting your money on marketing numbers ffs
The PS5 requires this

5,500MB/s or faster is recommended.
So maybe you should understand before you comment 👍🏻

I put my 980 Pro in the PS5 last night. It was manufactured in August 2021 and the speed was reported as 5600MB/s. I didn't bother trying to enable the game mode on it via samsung's software, but if it makes a real difference I might give it a try tonight. Has anyone done it and seen a performance increase?

are you basing your speeds on the ps5 internal benchmark? if so, dont, its horribly broken as proven by digital foundries latest video

Sorry I struck a nerve. However, they have a quality control issue.

Cuz disinformation generally irks me.

Samsungs SSDs have been gold standard for years.
I dont care about their fridges or expanding anal plugs, that has nothing to do with the quality of their SSDs which have been range toppers basically from the jump.
Literally the only complaint ive had with Samsung SSDs is that they were priced higher than the competition when the competition finally actually caught up.
The only reason to pay the premium prior was because they really were the best.

You say they have QC issues, got any links to all the failing or under performing Samsung SSDs?

The first step is to stop believing the PS5 actually requires an SSD that reads at 5+ GB/s when PC games have had equivalent load times for years even on SATA III based SSDs.
Some games will require that SSD. You are comparing cross gen games not using the new system and trust on the CPU to load and decompress content

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned, yet in this thread, but buying a PCie nvme adapter card for a desktop PC is relatively inexpensive - about a 1/10 of the cheapest nvme gen4 drive £10-20 tops - and can allow a drive to be firmware updated.

In fact, I would say it is the preferred way to go when giving advice, because not all nvme slots work on all motherboards, because they typically require a specific CPU - in Intel board situations. Also, unless your motherboard can bifuricate a PCIe slot - ie assign split channel PCIe lanes to different parts of the PCIe card, in that slot - then stay well clear of the more expensive dual PCIE to nvme cards.

edit:
to add my 2pence to the Samsung as a brand, I've only ever owned two Samsung devices, and one is the recently acquired 1/2 gigabit 980 pro nvme, using as a boot drive on PC, and works great, firmware update was a nothing event, and last xmas we bought a Samsung bubble soak Washer, the brushless type with the 2nd door hatch for the late sock, and it is has been excellent, it getting hammered (3-4 times a day use), however the buttons are etched/screen printed, and the one needed for the child lock is already worn off in just 9months :).

There needs to be a better benchmark for these drives on PS5. Can't really use games at the moment because nothing even comes close to hitting the drive hard enough to show a difference.
yes, cause ps5 fanboys keep moving the goal posts, R&C was meant to show the POWA OF TEH SSD, but digital foundary proved otherwise, so now its BUBUBUt CROSS GEN BRUH.

Its just an ssd, first party devs might eventually make use of it somehow but for 95% of games, its just an ssd

it's not only the ssd.
the console controller is made to reach 5,5 gb/s .
so because of silicon lottery on both you can end up with a combination where one , the other or the two will limit the result here.

In saying that, the drive is still 60% faster then the competition so whether it could be done there is still up in the air.

Well R&C has the heaviest use of the SSD so far and it’s the only game out right now that makes the SSD it’s key feature, so I see where people would think it’s using it’s full bandwidth.

Nor would the game perform the same on the PC on that drive with all the extraction layers that bottleneck the platform at the moment. It's all about that I/O and people finally came to terms with that in the other thread.

Unless all these "totally not fanboys in the other direction" super sleuth tech creampuffs know more than John Fucking Carmack.
