Have you seen the current Windows store?

The store sucks, but the Xbox app and UI is decent. But yes, they would need to have a plan, and they have to build on what Steam UI already has to offer, and completely ditch using the MS Store on PC.

Anyway, this isn't happening. The MS buying Steam rumors usually happens once in a while.

I doubt Microsoft is buying Valve but I'm not sure where people get the idea that Valve is raking it in. It seems plausible that they are, but how would you know? Nobody knows anything about Valve financials besides Valve.

Makes more sense than buying another publisher or studio, how it could be integrated into X Cloud would be the big selling point for Microsoft.

(Edit. came out too rude. sorry.)

"Private Company" means the company's stocks is not available for purchase in a stock market.

i can, right now, buy a piece of Apple, Microsoft, Sony, or Samsung. If i have infinite funds and available stock, I could potential buy 51% of any of these companies and thus make myself the controlling owner of one of these companies. (Technically not possible for most of them because of stock availability. Not to mention South Korean government would block any attempt of a Samsung foreign takeover, as Samsung supply local military hardware.)

On the other hand, private companies have stocks that are not on the market. That doesn't mean you can't buy them, but you can only do so by directly talking to the owners and personally make a deal with them. But what kind of deal can Microsoft even make with Gabe? Gabe has fuck-you-money already. Gabe is running Valve because he wants to run Valve, and he is researching VR because he wants to reserach into VR. Also collect knives of all kinds. Regardless you can't buy Valve off Gabe because he has more money than he knows what to do with it.

It also means he can do whatever he wants, and sell at a whim. Lots of rich guys were thought to never sell their company went ahead and sold (lucas comes to mind). He didn't need the money either, and he was richer than gabe.
They could also promise gabe a role as head of he VR department even if he sells and throw tons of money at it.

Also they wouldn't merge the windows store with steam, they would just move everything over to steam and the rename it to the Xbox store.

Look, Xbox customers are just getting delusional about their warchest. Some things are not for sell, and i find it even sadder for them to think Gabe is somehow MS's friend just because he doesn't favor Sony.

Money talks, nobody needs to be anyone's friend. You have zero real idea if he would do it or not.

How would any gamer benefit from this? I would rather have more choice than less personally.

Nothing would change, except maybe the name and some new things would be added. Don't be so dramatic, it's not like the windows game store would be a lost competitor......nobody uses it.

Valve is making BILLIONS every year, why on earth would they sell unless its for TRILLIONS which it isn't. I mean STEAM is such a cash-cow and a reason we barely even get games from Valve anymore.

Gabe ans other Steam owners surely has to retire at some point. Nothing lasts forever.

Is it still Gabe as the all mightier emperor of Valve?

Is the decision to sell his solely?

Given his age i can think this rumour may have some truth.

This makes me think of George Lucas selling Star Wars
He might very well do what Ingvar Kamprad (IKEA founder) did and take steps to make sure the company cannot be sold and stays privately held.
Ingvar founded a foundation to manage the company, so don't hold your breath for an IKEA IPO.

Competition is good for everyone. Encourages innovation and competitive pricing. It can only be a bad thing.

Maybe MS should invest in their own store and make that more functional & competitive. It's in a sorry state at the moment.

The leadership would change, which is the worst possible change for Steam. Steam is only as good as it is because it's got good people in charge of it.

No reason to think they would can the entire steam store team. More likely to can the windows store team......

In this case, steam never really had a real competitor other than epic. Steam success was never really about pricing, it was about having all your pc games in one easy place.
Ms could invest millions more and it would still have a hard time winning over a group of people entrenched in a platform where they own 100 - 500 games.

It fits MS M.O. but the only way for this happen is the fat fucker being tired of everything.

MS has the money, not the talent or competence. So, buying the competition is the way.

The 'team' is the workers, they make things happen. They don't decide what happens. Especially not if a true corporation like MS gets their mitts on Valve and overrides their flat structure.

Lots of times a company takes over a profitable one and does very little as to avoid losing money. I seriously doubt they would change much, really, just xbox store instead of steam.

As implausible as this sounds at first I don't think it would be impossible.

Steam is basically the PC gaming store front MS has always wanted but has yet been able to create. They wouldn't even have to change the name or anything about it and they'd be buying a money printer.

Gabe himself would probably eventually want to move on/retire at some point. He could stay on as an advisor or some less hands on role that would allow him to pursue other passions.

I doubt it's true in any way though, and hope it's not.

You ask why but that is an easy answer. They want to build their games fan base but no one wants to use the Windows store

Imagine a world where the digital distribution leaders for PC games are Microsoft, CD Projekt and Epic.

Damn.

That would also mean that Playstation exclusives are going to a Microsoft platform while MS is keeping the next Elder Scrolls away from Sony.

LOL

Meanwhile Nintendo's watching this like :

You can't game on linux and call yourself a gamer lol.
I have a hunch along the lines of - man, are Steam Deck and SteamOS 3.0 going to wallop your worldviews, young man. :p

There are very few companies structured like Valve. Basically the whole reason they're so free to do what they do, work for the benefit of the PC platform rather than just invent exciting new ways to screw over gamers to earn more money, is that they don't have a cabal of investors to answer to.

I dunno. Microsoft seems pretty consistent with how they are making purchases.

Wave 1 was about getting studios.
Wave 2 (Bethesda thru current) seems more about obtaining IP.

Not really sure how Valve would fit in there. Sire they could dominate the PC space with Valve and we'd probably get a HL3....but not sure Valve, for the money, is what MS is after.

A distribution method for the metaverse in a weird way.

What if they buy everything else other than Steam? What a world that would be.

If MS bought Steam I'd go into full meltdown mode and I'm not even exaggerating. I've invested too much into the platform.

Its a private company, Gabe is near retire age, so a sell is a reasonable option.
Probably not now now, probably not ms, but definitely he will cash valve before saying bye.

I hope not, Microsoft's UWP is just GFWL again, they want too much control and don't support PC gaming properly, but then again Valve hasn't done much for PC Gaming either in the last few years, they hardly make new games nowadays and too many basic games on there platform and why just Half Life Alex VR!, a non VR Alex would have sold by the bucket load, i still hope this doesn't happen though.

Lines up with MS wanting billions of people on Game Pass. This would be a huge step in that direction depending on what they will do if true.

Microsoft is literally moving away from UWP, at least for games.
the Windows store stopped requiring UWP apps, which means you can simply publish .exe games on there now.

also, I would imagine if Microsoft actually buys Valve that Steam would become their new go to storefront for games. letting the Microsoft store be used for mobile-esque games and apps like Asphalt 9 or Spotify etc.

so in actuality this could mean basically no change for Steam users but a positive change for people that use Gamepass, because it could mean Gamepass will use Steam in the future, meaning no more forced Microsoft Store.

also more PC + Xbox connectivity when crossplay is enabled and you have a shared Steam + Xbox friends list.

THE ISSUE however would be that actually unifying and interconnecting Xbox and Steam would be a very big undertaking and would probably take years to fully realise. and in these years I foresee bugs and other issues plaguing Steam and to a lesser extent Xbox users.

the amount of systems that are in place and would need to change for this is immense and stuff like that often goes terribly wrong

Valve/Steam are private companies, so no they won't.
Everything is for sale at the right price.

But Gabe doesn't need the money so I don't believe this, and Valve is mostly a service now that competes with other downloading services and really isn't worth buying by Microsoft.

It doesn’t work that way though. If you offer gabe what he expects himself to earn from Steam or Valve in general in the next 10 years or so he will most likely sell it, as he does not seem to be as interested in Valve as he did in the 2000s.

the biggest gaming storefront on Windows, a Microsoft platform, is not worth buying... for the platform holder Microsoft?

that's like if the Google Play store was in fact not run by google, and you'd say that it's not worth for Google to buy that storefront.

of course it is
