Microsoft will buy Valve or atleast Steam

Something has been bugging me ever since Microsoft announced their commitment to Steam
Why? What advantage does Microsoft get from this blind commitment to Steam? Xbox publishes all their first party titles day 1 on Steam. And then comes these statements

If we put some thought into this Valve fits all the bills. Valve is private, so we will never know until Microsoft announces this officially and nothing screams monopoly like owning Steam. Meanwhile Gabe Newell seems to have resigned himself to New Zealand for starting something new.

Gabe would never, ever accept any offer from MS

Valve doesnt need any money. They are filthy rich.

They also wouldnt have the liberty to do their own thing like they do now. To experiment with new tech, launch niche games like Alyx, Steam Deck.

They would also bleed talent. Everyone that works at Valve can do what they want, basicaly. Thats why they have so many talented people doing whatever.

This is not happening. I bet my account. Ban me if so.

Edit: cant understand the "Triggered" reactions, but thats GAF for you

Re-brand the Deck as Xbox Series M(mobile) or P (portable).
I had thought about this a while ago, would there be monopoly type concerns? and does Microsoft care about Linux.
I can't see it happening personally.

Microsoft is essentially a PC developer at this point. Xbox is nothing more than a steambox-like device anyhow.

I would be fine with this if it means Microsoft can force Valve to stop being lazy fucks and actually develop games again.
Nah, Valve is pretty much the only big gaming company that proactively tries to expand the use of linux for games. Them being acquired by MS would be a nightmarish scenario.

That said, this is very unlikely because:
A. Valve is filthy rich and has humongous marketshare, not much reason for them to sell themselves to MS.
B. The reason for MS buying a bunch of developers (and a publisher) is because they want many IPs and games to fill gamepasses library. Valve has too few meaningful games for that to be worth it.
C. Even in the scenario where they'd supposedly buy Valve to put gamepass on steam, its easier to just strike a deal with them... or sell their games on the platform so they can increase the amount of MS accounts - aka potential future subscribers to gamepass.

Meh, LInux is a niche market.

Everyone has a price, even Valve. Valve's IPs are some of the largest in the industry, even if they are few in number. Half Life alone is as big of a name as Halo or DOOM.

Otherwise I do agree with you. I don't see MS buying Valve, but I wouldn't be against the idea of it either. I just want to see some new games in these great franchises and its clear Valve is too far up its own ass to develop actual games these days. They are more interested in shitting out mediocre products they can fill to the bring with MTX. Half Life Alyx was a partial exemption (though it was essentially a "buy VIVE" product anyhow).

I mean, yeah, they could instead shit out a sequel to half life every 1 or 2 years until the name becomes but souless shell.

Hell no, spare me from that. I would rather have them releasing 1 remarkable game every 10 years and some cool hardware every now and then like they are now.
And don't tell me the games they'd keep releasing every year would all be ultra great because we both know that wouldn't be the case at all.

Microsoft needs to buy Sony and just put us out of this misery once in for all.
Just buy everyone, put everything on gamepass. God of war? Gamepass. New Zelda game? Gamepass. PS6? Rented through gamepass. Netflix? Download through gamepass. Private retirement funds? Requires a gamepass subscription.
Buy Space X too to make Mars colonies gamepass exclusive.

Or they could release a good sequel every 4-5 years, y'know like most major development studios worth their salt tend to do these days.

The reality is, Valve has released one average game (Half Life Alyx) and a bunch of shitty MTX games over the past decade with a bunch of overpriced, mediocre hardware. Modern Valve is a joke. And hell, even if they were bought out by Activision (not that they ever would), I would still find that to be an improvement over what they have become.
