Gran Turismo 7 to only support Ray tracing in Replays

SlimySnake

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Saw this in the Japanese interview by Kaz:
――I'm looking forward to implementing ray tracing, but on the other hand, what game fans are interested in is where ray tracing can be used because it is very heavy processing.

Mr. Yamauchi: For the
time being, you can choose ray tracing in the replay even during the game, and then you can see the stage demo and the picture with ray tracing applied in the garage.
――Isn't it really applicable while driving?

Yamauchi:
That's right. It's really difficult while driving.

Just wow.

Later goes on to say that they are aiming for perfect 4k/60 fps. Umm why not have a 1440p 60 fps mode with ray tracing?
――I'm also very concerned about the performance of the game, but please tell us how far you are challenging, including the frame rate.

Mr. Yamauchi:
First of all, I am thinking of achieving perfect 4K / 60fps.

No 120 fps support either.
――How about the 120fps display?

Mr. Yamauchi:
We are aware of that, but we have no plans to support 120p at the time of the release of "GT7".

That sucks. I wonder if they'll patch in the ability to turn it on during gameplay, with a reduced or scaling resolution.

I fucking said it:

Yep, and with racing games you have multiple fast moving cars that need to have all of those ray traced reflections, it's a huge undertaking.

I'd imagine that what we will see in FM and GT is RT for the player car only (and no ray tracing on any other potentially reflective surfaces like puddles etc) but even that might be a stretch at 60fps. Wouldn't be surprised if all it ends up being is ray tracing in replays and photomode.

It was supposed to be added to assetto corsa competizione but the developers decided to scrap it because they decided it didn't add a worthwhile improvement to the game when in motion - basically it wasn't worth the performance penalty. Demo starts at 3 minutes 16 seconds:

So just like FH5 with autovista, bring the crow. Can't believe raytraced Spiderman got full on racing games beat.
you know this is another one of those things where MS was up front about something while Sony played coy for years. GT7 was revealed with ray tracing everywhere in the first trailer. Not a single mention of whether or not it was tied to replay only. Playground Games caught a lot of flack over it because people naturally assumed GT7 was shipping with ray tracing. Very similar to Phil getting heat for cross gen comments because of Jim Ryan's I believe in generations claims.

Console wars are alive and well. It's pretty lame to see companies continue to mislead their fanbase in 2021. Lots of crow to be served, but can you really blame us Sony fans for believing devs and execs?

Spot on yeah.
I’m not even a tiny bit bothered though. Just nail 60fps at whatever resolution it needs to be at and it’s enough for me. Make it 1080p60 if needed. 👍

I didnt follow GT7 PR in the past, but they stated RT in gameplay? Was it shown in gameplay videos? Or were they vague about RT, or just showed it in zoomed in replays?

If Sony only showed RT in replays, they can technically say "we never claimed RT everywhere or in gameplay"

i don’t know why in 2021 people say stuff like this today. Different engines alone, dev time and plans are reason why everything doesn’t have everything. Even that “full on“ ray traced spiderman made sacrifices for what it is doing.

  • Stunning visuals: Marvel at rendering quality through ray tracing, with support for 4K, HDR, and a targeted 60 FPS frame rate.
I guess it’s technically correct. Will it support 60fps and RT in replays at the same time?

Your bullet point is a vague enough claim to say, since no company would bother saying "RT is in replays only" when talking about RT.

Its like any company saying the game is 4k, when only some of the game is native 4k.

As long as some of the game has the feature, it's good enough to claim holistically likes it's in the game all the time.

I love GT as much as anyone, but I get the feeling that Polyphony are not at the cutting edge of game development anymore. All I want is a solid racing game, with sharp and smooth visuals and I’ll be happy, but it is disappointing (though not surprising) to hear that there will be no ray-tracing during gameplay, especially with all the focus they have put on it during the few videos they have shown.

Yeah I’m quoting from the store page. It’s one of those « technically true but a lil bit shitty » statements that I find annoying personally.

MS stated from the very first reveal that RT would be in Forzavista only when they could have said « FH5 supports Ray Tracing » and clarify it later.

Jesus you're delusional

Companies mislead fanbases all the time lol. Do you live in a cave?
CD Projekt Red? EA?

and Phill spencer is as much as full of shit as Jim ryan. or should i remind you of "Xbox Series X Will Have Best Launch Lineup Position Yet" bullshit?

Also, the "I believe in generations" quote, did you read the full interview where he said that? He never said Sony was only making PS5 games from that point forward.

Ray traced reflections aren't that important, especially in a car game. It's gonna look fine.

Those are subjective puffery statements. No different a company saying they "Make the best donuts in town".

But claiming a product has a feature is more measurable. In this case, GT7 has RT, but only in replays. So Sony saying the game has RT is technically true, but for it to be buried behind replays only is misleading because it is finally clarified now its limited in scope.

Its like a TV maker saying their new TV coming is HDMI 2.1 compliant and 4 ports. But out of the 4 HDMI ports, it turns out only one port is. The others are HDMI 2.0. And nobody would know it until now when the original statement for a year sounds like all ports would be 2.1.

Raytracing reflections durimg gameplay are barely visible for moving objects, maybe they can add rtx on buildings, windows, etc.
The same for rtx lighting, sometimes it can take seconds to be stable for static objects, it could be a nightmare to implement on fast cars'

Idk man I just want to see full car to car reflections in a racer one day. Now our next hopes are on the Forza reboot... I don't care if the reflections are 720p or whatever concession they think off, this is open world on a last gen engine and it brought so much out visually

after df Alex analysis year ago when he said he can't find rt during gameplay I'm not surprised at all (to be honest racing games doesn't need rt that much tough its not explanation that gt7 looks like gt sport just in 4k)

So if I read it that way, they do want to implement RT for gameplay at a later date.

So are people missing this part "For the time being"?

Remember when some people were saying Forza didn't look next-gen because RT was only for the Forza Vista mode?

'Ya kids can't talk so soon xD. Anyway, this is a non-issue; you don't need RT to look "next-gen", games like Demon's Souls Remake and Flight Simulator prove this.

However, my bigger concern is how GT7, at least from what they showed recently, looks comparatively unimpressive next to Forza Horizon 5, and that's considering the latter's an open-world racer on top of it. Hopefully the graphics get better closer to launch.
