Ubisoft posted the new patch for Watch Dogs Legion but what was more interesting was the size of the patches in each platform.

Sizes
PS4: 26.6gb
PS5: 3.2gb
XB1: 23.8gb
XSX: 40.2gb
PC/Stadia: 25.98gb

In another news Tales of Arise is 20GB smaller on PS5 than PS4.

It can't be possible to get this difference only with an improved compression.

Maybe what happens is that, in addition to have better compression, in PS5 they only download the files or part of the files that change compared to the installed version. Where in the other systems it's redownloaded the entire game or the entire changed files.

Or probably the PS5 version already updated some of these things on a previous version or will include them in a second one.

Delta updates were a thing on PS4 as well. #inkrakenwetrust

What's the game size after patch for each one?

I think I deleted the game, I'm not seeing it in my list lol, I did just get a 22GB update for Cyberpunk though, not sure why I still have it installed (external).

Maybe it is just a huge text file, where they only changed the version number for PS5 and didnt get any improvements at all?

Good question, I've downloaded many 20GB+ patches for Cyberpunk 2077, but overall size rosed by like 8GBs. It's the packaging, which is retarded on Xbox. You can't really do "patches" in true sense, if you have some issue needing to update in 20GB file, even 1KB, you are downloading whole 20GBs.

Only few times, Gears 5 get this sort of delta patch, like on PlayStation. But it's slow as shit, on X1X I remember (also I wrote about it here), that 300MBs patch took like an hour and half. Normally patches are applied to Xbox when they finish downloading, so no copy/install patch or anything like that. If they are continue with this I don't know, but I never catch any game doing it.

It's differentiate by saying "patching game" and not "updating" in My Games and Apps.

Yea, that seems really extreme. Are they sure it ain't 23.2 or 13.2? Which seems a little more realistic, because 3.2 is a really small file size. Did they remove all the 4k textures and RT :pie_roffles: jk

Something else that caught my eye is the minimal shit in the patch. Maybe its just tons of backend stuff they didn't note, but gigs upon gigs of data regardless of platform for this? I played through it on PC, and beat it last fall shortly after it came out(Tried it on both consoles and didn't like the performance then - can't speak on how they run now honestly)...but they really got PC users downloading 26 gigs for this? Or are the rest of the patch notes somewhere else lol
General:

  • Fixed an issue that caused the Spiderbot Arena minimum player requirement to be 4 players. This fix reduces the minimum player requirement to the intended 2 players.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed missing visual effects on some UI highlights when hovering over them with a mouse.
  • Removed the Cargo Drone from Watch Dogs: Legion of the Dead.

PC:

  • Fixed an issue that could cause players to be unable to recruit Operatives with the requirement of Season Rank 10 while having already unlocked Rank 10.

Xbox:

  • Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash when signing out of the active profile while in the main menu of Watch Dogs: Legion.
  • Fixed an issue where controller inputs did not register if a controller was activated after accepting an out-of-game invitation to start Watch Dogs: Legion.

Xbox One:

  • Fixed an issue that could cause the game to crash.

It can be a typo? Well it can but very hard.

Vanalla update shows similar trend.

  • Xbox Series X|S: 18.7 GB
  • Xbox One: 13.5 GB
  • PlayStation 5:  5.32 GB
  • PlayStation 4: 5-13 GB (depending on region)
  • PC:  14.14 GB

  • Xbox Series X|S: 23.79 GB
  • Xbox One: 17.72 GB
  • PlayStation 5: 6.85 GB
  • PlayStation 4: 15.3-24.5 GB (depending on region)
  • PC: 20.4-31.37 GB (main game– season pass)

BTW the patch is online and people are reporting it is really 3.2GB on PS5.

Wow, okay... maybe it ain't so crazy. That's some compression.

I just didn't want to verbalize this very real possibility.

Objection
PC version is smaller ;)
I guess the Xbox SC version has the xb1x + series x packages on board.

late Edit:
Oh.. no I see my mistake, my head used the PS4 size ^^

Thats good though of course not related to game real-time stream decompress but just download static compression.
Looking at the original numbers for other patches, they seem to be within the normally expected differences. This one is beyond the actual theoretical compression differences between the 2 compressors. This seems to bring up a more interesting question if no one else is just giving a fuck, or if Sony is doing something different due to their smaller SSD or.
Regardless of realtime perf, whatever is being done, if resources are like for like, everyone should do it to save customers bandwidth.

I don't know anything about compression but that just seems impossible.

Ridiculously good if true,

I prefer a 30gb download patch in place on a 30gb game over one that is 1mb and has to unpack - repack the whole game over many hours.

Shite unproven-claim title.

If that’s purely down to compression, I’ll eat my pants and buy a PS5 immediately. (I think my y’s and money are safe).

That is a PS4 game… not PS5.
Maybe it is some issue with the BC mode.
It's still shit regardless. I'm going to have to download approx 140gb with reinstalling the other 2 games I have to delete and every one is happy cause of WDL is only 3.2 gigs.
Credit where credit is due but let's not ignore the problems.

On another note could the WDL patch size have anything to do with how once patches are downloaded it takes a fair bit of time to copy where there is none of that on Xbox.
