Scalpers Lose 30% On PS5 Prices, Despite Restock Problems

Despite PlayStation 5 stock levels not keeping up with demand, and the console remaining difficult to buy, resell prices are quickly falling.

PS5 prices on the secondary market StockX have tumbled by almost 30% since their peak according to new data. The company explained to me that after hitting $1,000 on Cyber Weekend 2020 for the disc version, the console has since dropped to $715 in September. This is also 10% less than the price in June.

The digital edition also peaked at $1000 on Cyber Weekend 2020 and is now selling for just under $700, which is 6% cheaper than three months ago. Both remain significantly more expensive than their retail price at $499 (disc) and $399 (digital).

Will probably pick up soon as Christmas is coming.

But for now this year, the major price drops show demand is dropping and gamers would rather wait it out. As more time passes, gamers realize the next gen system games arent as pimped out as they thought they would be. So just wait.

Now if supply is still bad going into Christmas and prices have barely budged, it shows gamers really dont care.

30% since the peak. But ‘Both remain significantly more expensive than their retail price at $499 (disc) and $399 (digital).’ so they will keep doing it…

Yeah and the money back guarantee stuff for online purchases means they can buy it and then just return it if they cannot get what they wanted for it. No risk whatsoever on their part.

I bought mine off a scalper, dont have regrets tbh. The way I saw it, I paid the bloke £80 to stay up until 3am pressing F5 while I slept like a baby. I can see why they do it, but this issue is on the retailer, there are so many ways they could prevent this, but they dont, because a sale is a sale and they couldnt give a fuck.

Also, not to make this a console war issue, but I think the demand for PS5 will now be slightly lower since Sony seem to be charging for slight upgrades on games while MS are becoming more and more user friendly, that surely will lower demand slightly?

Bound to happen when people get burned out on trying to even acquire one and give up.

Sony really should just be selling these to PS+ account holders who's accounts are a certain age and do not already have one (easily databased and tracked info) but hey.

Maybe give the console for free, if they sub for 10+ years (PS+@$60 or with PSNow for $99/y)?

Yeah, this will surely help significantly with the current stock / demand issues!

They still need to sub for 10 years at $99. The console will be free* for 10*$99 = $1,000, $500 for the console, $500 for the subs a $50. After 10 years, you return the console, upgrade to the new one or Sony will send you some Nintendo Goon to your house!

The scalpers cant do jacks hit about it, as the consoles will be locked to a region, to the ps+ codes. A $1,000 investment is not easy to flip, especially if people know they´re only getting $500 worth of PS+ (10y).

Yeah the market is much better now, which is why I was able to pick one. But I think it’s going to be bad again starting from October so I would not wait too long.

Doubt on both fronts. The scalper is probably asleep as well and has a bot buying the PS5. And the PS3/360 proved Sony can beat Microsoft no matter what they do.

I managed to grab one for $600 on Amazon through a third party seller. I wasn't thrilled about paying over retail, but I'll use the shit out of it for the next 5+ years so I find it to be money well spent.
R&C, Demon's Souls, and Returnal all definitely impressed me. My biggest disappointment is easily that older titles don't take advantage of the newer hardware, ESPECIALLY the new nvme drives.
There were a couple of titles with absolutely atrocious loading times (looking at you Pathfinder and Pillars 2) that I wanted to revisit. Would a simple rez bump and faster loads really be that hard to implement?

Not surprised. I'd assume most of the super hardcore gaming audience has one at this point.

And I bet most of them have played something like two or three PS5 games and it's not been switched on for four months because they're not interested in playing PS4 games on it. The irony. :p

Well, after that Sony 'Showcase' each and everyday that goes by, the desire for a PS5 lessens, TBH.

Until this Cross Gen backlog is cleared, with the odd exception like Ratchet, The PS5 is stuck running in 2nd gear.

Most likely not the cause of that tough. It's going to be years before Sony's constant failings (like you said) affect them. As long as Sony produces good games the PS5 will be fine.

Here in the UK recently, we had about two weeks of good supply. Prices on eBay dropped to around £525-550, so scalpers were very little profit if at all after delivery and fees. Checking now though, prices are well above £600 on average.

Even with the misleading title, the summer is usually a slow month and soon they'll be selling at high prices.

I sold my ps5 disc at msrp to someone who was looking for one in my town, old dude who wanted it to play nhl and nfl games. I'm gonna get another one but digital this time, at msrp when I can get my hands on it. There's nothing really I want to play until horizon forbidden west since I was done with ratchet and demon's souls.

Anyways, d2r is about to come out, this will be it for a while on pc.

So basically econ 101.(Fewer people willing to buy at those prices means scalpers, who are competing with each other, have to drop their prices to entice more people to buy at any inflated price.)

They don’t loose 30% by still getting more than they paid. They gain less would be more fitting, and then it‘s 60% less (200 vs 500$).
Unless more PS5 exclusives are released I don’t think anyone is really in an urgent need to get a PS5

Sitill can't understand how people can't get one, when I decided to get one, back on February, it only took me one week to find one.

Supply is getting slowly better, it's still nowhere close to a point where we can buy one at a retailer anytime but there are multiple restocks each month.
At the same time we're probably getting close to 14m consoles shipped so demand from core gamers who want one at all costs should go down.
If you want one you can either follow online restocks or get into a preorder list and you should get one within 1-2 months at worst, there's no sense to give money to these people who are reselling it at outrageous prices.

It's not really the scalpers that annoy me. It's the people who pay the silly prices so they can play 1 game and then not touch the machine for months. Just fuckin' wait for retail price.

Good, means the leaches are making less and less money.
Why are you blaming scalpels and not Sony not having good enough supply chain to meet demand? Apple can ship tens of millions of iPhones despite the pandemic because they built their suppliers network over more than a decade. Another example - Amazon is literally unbeatable due to their warehouse network, no other company can match their logistics.

Blame Sony for not figuring this shit out sooner.

I had ps5s in carts for bestbuy and target 12 times total and wasn’t able to check out. I final just got a disk system off eBay for $650. 🤷‍♂️

This was me. I tried since launch, lost count of how many times I added one to a cart only to lose it. Best Buy, Target, Wally World, Amazon, Newegg, you name it I tried it.

They do, they don’t just blow it all on PS5. I’m renovating my apartment right now and the delays on everything are just unbelievable.
I can go with that, too. I'm still waiting for a specific IKEA desk to come in stock. I'm about to stop being cheap and just build the desk myself with one of their kitchen countertops. :(

I'm seeing a few more guys in my friend list having them now, but it feels like the obvious dearth of must-have software has dawned on a lot of people attempting to get one.

You’re not going to see PS5 on store shelves so get ready to pay more, Sony is the standard and it’s identity is video games.

Thats definitely part of why i've kinda lost interest in getting one.

At this point i've been forced to wait for so long that i might as well wait for a potential pro version. Any games i missed will probably be heavily discounted by that point as well.

It's a great machine and I'm glad I bought one, but I mostly play PS4 games on it, enjoying the improved performance and lack of a roaring fan.

In ten months of it being on sale I've only bought two PS5 games, RE: Village and Demon's Souls. Elden Ring will be my third, but after that, who knows?

When have you ever rented something, and bought the extra accessories for it. Probably never. There's less incentive to buy games and accessories, if you don't actually own it.
