Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic Remake Revealed

I can’t wait till these same people can bring Mario to modern audiences.

We all know jumping is ableist so we should remove jumping. There are also people who are not financially equal so we need to take out coin collecting too.

This is why I really think you should not use your monkey’s paw for remake/remaster/port . You are going to be disappointed 7/10 times.

Most of the same people screaming "Money hats!!" will the same ones fapping when more information comes out about the next Elder Scrolls or Fallout, because that is totally different.
I miss the NES/SNES/SMS/GENESIS days when yeah people would toss barbs about their system having a game and the other not but nobody would spend hours and hours bitching and whining about it on an internet. If you want all the games buy all the systems.
TBF there was no "internet" back then the way we have it now. They did have newsgroups where people sometimes did complain (Internet Archive has some of them still).

FWIW tho I don't consider the next ES or Fallout to be moneyhats, either, because it's the same thing there that Sony is doing here: they (MS) are funding production and curating/helping out in the development process. But that should be expected in their case since they own the studios now. Moneyhats to me are purely when a platform holder buys a game for a period of time to keep it off another console even if they funded none of the development and the game is published by a 3P, made by a 3P and was gonna most likely be multiplat anyway. Rise of the Tomb Raider is a moneyhat, for example. The recent VF5: Ultimate Showdown is another moneyhat situation.

WTF are you talking about?

WTF do the Star Wars movies have to do with a star-wars-hating wokester working on the game in a non-influential capacity?

At this point, I'm forced to assume you're either entirely delusional and need psychological help, or you're a salty Xbox fanboy/astroturfer trying to run interference because your daddy/employer xbox isn't getting this game.

I mean if she's a writer on the game then she already has some influence over some notable part of the game's design. Writing is kind of important in RPGs and all.

The correlation being made is that many of the modern Star Wars movies and projects, for a lot of people (including myself) have hired writers with similar depositions as Sam, and they've ended up writing pretty mediocre stuff. Just look at the High Republic, or the way a lot of things were written in The Last Jedi. There's something of a clear pattern there. Similarly, look at a couple of the writers that were on Mass Effect Andromeda; very similar behavior as Sam on Twitter, and the writing in Andromeda turned out to be pretty mediocre (as was the game itself).

Unfortunately it's because of the patterns why there's concern, you can't just wash that away as paranoia or console wars BS. There's now a potential risk here that the remake could be compromised in terms of its writing quality, even if the writer's politics aren't hamfisted into the script, because there's enough patterns in other media examples of people like them writing on projects that either end up with mediocre writing due to forced political messaging, poor utilization of writing techniques, or a mix of both.

Also I'm not saying "non-woke" (as much as I hate these culture war terms nowadays) are inherently any better of writers, we have a history of piss-poor comics, movies, games, shows etc. with people very far removed from extreme-leftists politics at the writing helm. However, at least in modern times there's not as much an obvious correlation with "non-woke" writers tending to be poor or mediocre writers. There's definitely some who are, and maybe it feels much less only because they aren't really getting a lot of these big writing positions on certain massive films, games etc., but the degree where that correlation tends to be true with them, is less.

That all said, there's not even word on if Sam is the head writer, and these games are written by a team of people, so folks honestly could be freaking out about much of nothing. We'll just have to wait and see I suppose.

I was not referring to your opinion nor mine. You did not understand my post or maybe do not understand that movies can be viewed from an objective stand point for what they offer.

I understood what you said quite clearly. Last Jedi being "bad" is not a matter of fact. If you want to look at the movie from an objective stand point then state facts, not opinions.

We never crossed the line into actually providing critiques since you are too ready to dismiss everything(apparently) as opinion. FYI things can have aspects that're objectively bad and good. You may not understand the differences between objective and subjective.

Hopefully that just means more ARPG gameplay elements and nothing to do with story themes. But oh you know, not gonna hold my breath, just hopefully pleasantly surprised.

Only thing I am dismissing is the notion the movie is “objectively bad”.

It's so bizarre, who is funding this idiocracy still?

I read her tweets thinking folks were overblowing it, but nope - she legit dislikes both the franchise and it's fans and is excited about "changing things" in a fucking remake!

It's just so odd, you would think when it comes to the talent pool for video-game writers, finding someone who loves both Starwars and RPG games would be like shooting fish in a barrel, who in the industry wouldn't love to work on this and pay their respects to one of the greatest RPGs? but nope, they must really go out of their way to find someone who is more interested in what they can change.

I can just about get my head around why they might do it, maybe they think if they just had existing fans working on it, then it would limit it's appeal to the existing fandom, and that by somehow putting someone who dislikes the original or is interested in shaking things up, it will somehow improve the final product and appeal to a wider audience. But we have the receipts from the past few games they tried to do this on that demonstrate it's commercial suicide and leaves neither side happy, who liked Andromeda? who thinks in retrospect having that guy with the "white mens tears" mug as the lead writer worked out well?

As you said, it never ends (until they finally go bust)
I think it’s from hiring like minded people. Look what happens to conservatives in tech or Hollywood. You keep your mouth shut or get in trouble. So even conservatives in the industry are unlikely to push back.

Wrote an entire response and figured it isn't worth going down this rabbit hole since we have already gone too far already for no reason. I will just agree to disagree.

Sony is notorious for not giving full details about exclusivity when it comes to 3rd party games. Soon ninjas will find out exact details. My guess is timed console exclusive and then Xbox and PC at later date, but at launch on PS5 only
That's funny after many thought The Medium was exclusive to Xbox

You haven't been following the discussion.

Check my previous post in the thread.

Sam is not a lead writer. She's not even a staff writer. She's an external contractor helping out on a contract basis. Her creative influence will be minimal at best.

You people are the fucking worst. By all means, let's pretend that every person in existence has played a game made in 2003.

For many people this will be a new game.

It's a shame so many are too fucking stupid and self-centered to see this.
Not to say I'm not excited for this game if they actually put effort into it, but you can't empathize with the fatigue from nonstop reboots, sequels, prequels, remakes, soft reboots, remasters, etc? I think asking for a continuation or even an entirely new kotor-like rpg experience isn't that outlandish. When you get older, do you just want to play endless reboots and remasters of games you grew up with? To a certain extent, I can understand, but it feels out of hand to me; and not just in video games. Music and movies as well are in this pit too.

I believe in free speech but what I'm wondering is why in god's name does a company hire someone who is controversial for a remake of a beloved boomer game?
I imagine they want the nostalgia ¥€$?

And yes my Revan was a cute lesbian with a pink lightsaber who turned Bastilla to the Dark Side before anyone asks.

Seeing that writers twitter posts make me lose hope for this game. I really enjoyed SWTOR. I ended up not even playing it for the MMO part and ended up with 4 max level characters. I haven't played KOTOR yet. I have it on my phone so I might get a chance.

This job should have been a shoe-in for Gary Whitta.

And if you think this shit is bad, wait until we get the Acolyte on Disney Plus. A confirmed Star Wars male hater showrunner, writing the farthest back in any Star Wars period we've gone. Kyber Crystals revealed to be Women's periods ripped from their Jedi uterus by an Evil White Middle-Aged Sith Lord. Darth Privilege.

Why does Kotor need to be '' rewritten ''?..................

It still holds up to this day...
Even Blizzard had the brain cells to not rewrite WC3R and D2R ( even tho they actually wanted to do it at first with WC3R but backpeddled after people got mad ).

Star Wars is dead to me
It was dead when they first told the fanbase that the Expanded Universe was noncanon. Picked up a bit with Clone Wars and the Mandalorian but the Gina Carano thing and Episodes 7-9 are drowning the franchise in mud.

Not very happy with how things went down. Those movies pretty much through out the original scenario writing and wrote some bad fanfic of a story.

No Jaina and Jacen and no Mara Jade.

I don't even think we got much of Admiral Thrawn either.

Disappointing.

A few more relevant facts about Sam Maggs (if they're at all worth anything to some of you guys anymore):

  • Sam Maggs is not a permanent staff of the Aspyr team. She's a consultant and therefore working with Aspyr as an external contractor
  • Sam Maggs was also a lead writer on Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart, which launched to rave reviews and is a fantastic game many of us have played and enjoyed which did not contain any of the radical left woke BS some of you are trying to fear-monger over this game

Given the above, together with the fact that Sam Maggs is not a senior writer on this project, nor is the project a wholly original work; in that much of the OG game dialogue and text will be retained, the FUD many on this forum seem to want to spread about this game is just downright disgraceful.

It's...

The only thing "absolutely disgusting" is your desperate attempt to hide from reality.

Let's for a moment ignore the fact that she is a "professional" who actively shit on the very community she was hired to help write a game on.

Even if she doesn't fill the title with poorly thought out, mental midget slacktivism - her work on Rift Apart shows that she would provide a mindless, forgettable story full of insanely common clichés with no real substance.

Rift Apart was a success in spite of, not because of, its story. And even then, I would argue it is one of the weakest entries in the franchise. It lacked any of the passion that the series had prior, the character's were all one note and forgettable (even if they had killer designs), lacked almost any humor that the series was known for, and its worlds blended together and lacked the wide diversity previously known.

I‘d typically be much more hyped about this and I hate to be pessimistic, but FFVII Remake left a bad taste in my mouth. I know many loved it, but the alterations to the combat system and narrative fundamentally changed it into a different beast that skewed a bit too far from what I adored about the original. Reading,

”We are recreating one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with technology, modern features and graphics, while staying true to the story and the characters we cherish.”

…doesn’t fill me with confidence. “Modern features”.….a step away from “modern audiences”, and what we know happens in the attempt to cater to them. I’m fully expecting this to have a twitch, action-based combat system with superficial RPG elements at best, if any at all.

I‘ll hold my excitement for this one until I hear a bit more about these modern features they’re alluding to.

No official confirmation yet. But from what I understand, Bethesda pitched Disney to make an Indiana Jones game before MS acquired Bethesda. The pitch the got approved, and the project started. It was announced in January 2021. MS acquired Bethesda in March 2021.

So the contracts were signed before the acquisition, and MS could not influence any decision pre-acquisition. Disney must have listed all the platforms that Bethesda will develop the game for. Unless MS was able to re-negotiate the contract with Disney, this game will likely come on all platforms.

I think MS was able to add a clause that the game will launch on Gamepass, but that's about it. That's the only thing Xbox officially shared after Bethesda independently announced the game. If the game was Xbox/PC exclusive, they would have said it so I think.

The last jedi being a bad 2nd movie in a Star Wars trilogy is fact. It nullified the 1st movie and set up nothing for the 3rd. It was an indulgent piece of fiction by a man who gave 2 shits about the overall product.

How can you possibly accuse me of this with a straight face, all the while ignoring all the facts about Sam Maggs' actual position at the studio that I've presented?

Neither you nor others have provided any factual evidence to support your fear-mongering idea that any involvement of Sam on the project will mean the project will be fucked.

Your own foolish conjecture doesn't stand up to scrutiny at all when you consider she was a lead writer at Insomniac working on Ratch & Clank: A Rift Apart, and that game had none of the radical leftist propagandizing that you're all claiming is a 100% inevitability.

You're the ones ostensibly hiding from reality, in a poor attempt to push a weird narrative, that because some low-level external contract writer on the project seemingly hates the IP, their views are suddenly going to overrule that majority of internal senior staff writers, game designers and the game director (many of which worked on the original KOTOR game by the dev Aspyr's on admission).

You're making a ridiculous mountain out of a molehill in this thread and embarrassing yourselves while doing it.

But I guess that's the kinda behaviour that's increasingly become the norm on this forum. Especially in threads related to a certain platform holder.... I wonder why...

Lol 😂 the game wasn’t announced for any platforms though just like star field. Also they don’t have to honor any contracts they can also buy them out hence outer worlds 2 being exclusive to Xbox. I’m sure Indian Jones will be exclusive.

How are Starfield and Indiana Jones similar in this case?

Starfield is Bethesda's own IP (which is now owned by Microsoft). They can do whatever they want with it. So they decided to release the game only on Xbox/PC.

Indiana Jones is not Bethesda's/MS's IP. It is owned by Disney. If Disney says you have to release the game on PlayStation or else we'll cancel the contract, they will have to release it on PS. Just like MLB forced Sony's hand into releasing the game on Xbox (it will also be on PC next year).

Besides, don't forget that Bethesda was independent when they got the contract for Indiana Jones. At the time of the contract, Disney would have mentioned all platforms. Unless MS subsequently renegotiated the contract, it's coming on all platforms. Ubisoft and EA (also multiplatform third-party publishers, just like Bethesda was at that time) got similar contracts, and they all are releasing games on all platforms.

They could, but they didn't because they had to buy out the contract, and pay the penalty, and take the PR hit. It wasn't viable for them to do so. It's not like Phil decided to keep the contracts intact (and release games for PlayStation gamers and not for Xbox gamers) out of the goodness of his heart.

In Indiana Jone's case, buying out the contract isn't an option. Renegotiating the contract with Disney is the only option. Whether MS was able to do that or not remains to be seen.

We don't know any numbers, but of course it's all about business and money. I don't think an exclusive deal is impossible since Sony managed to get Wolverine, but as you said: Time will tell.
