If your not playing your XSX/PS5 on a proper HDR set you are not doing the games justice

To make a long story short. I am playing my ps5 on a Quantum LED 4k tv set with over 1000 nit brightness. Colors pop and the contrast is amazing. I took my library of games over my buddies house and he is playing on a 4 year old 1080p Samsung. Holy shit the difference is night and day. He doesn't have HDR and games often look flat and bland in comparision. It's equivalent of playing an Xbox 360 on a 480p flatscreen. Food for thought!

Yeah, it really it's like that. I have old 1080p/60hz TV in my weekend house, it's quite large, but no HDR or any of those new nice things. And in home I have LG CX 65", the difference is striking. Like watching movie in your parent's basement and watching movie in imax theatre.

I have HDR turned completely off on my XSX, I just cannot stand the eye-melting whites when it comes to subtitles and HUD/UI elements for more than 5min, literally. If I only could I'd disable the feature entirely directly on the TV (LG GX), because Netflix, YT etc. are also waaay to bright for 30-60min. sittings, let alone anything longer.

I tried HDR with like 40% brightness for some time, but then I asked myself, do I even get any benefits of the tech at all? Where sure, the bright stuff is now tolerable but everything else is so damn dimmed, washed out of color? So I went back to SDR and haven't looked back ever since. But that's one of the many reasons I went with an OLED panel instead of LCD, because the colors and contrast are amazing regardless, the only game where I personally saw noticeable difference was The Touryst, but other than I haven't miss HDR even once.

I actually played psychonaughts 1 on plasma this weekend, and we lost something special there. I don't need HDR. On plasma, lighting glowed in a magic way, it look like real life, and it moved in a way that beat my OLED with HDR..

Maybe I will turn auto-HDR off and see how I feel on OLED. Plasma definitively seemed special though. Maybe I just got the colors super accurate on that Plasma. It's wild.

I get they were future proofing with HDR, but maybe they should have went with upping the limit to 400 nits and called it quits. I think creators would have handled it bettet, there would be fewer settings and mappings, and brights would still be extra-squinty.

Amen. Going from an “hdr ready” Samsung led set to a proper LG OLED was like night and day. Can’t possibly imagine not using HDR anymore.

Well yea. According to the experts my TV's HDR isn't even all that great (doesn't get dark or light enough for their distinguished palettes I guess), and games still look night and day different to me if I disable HDR. It has a huge impact. I fell in love with it during the very first day of using my PS4 Pro on my (then) new TV.

I'll take it further and say proper HDR OLED ;)

Night and day difference

I love the way colours pop on my QLED.
I will get an OLED next when the kids are a bit older and hopefully burn in has been eradicated

Agreed. Every time I see games like Ghost of Tsushima transformed into these gorgeous games with life-like lighting I could only imagine a few years back, the OLED purchase gets completely justified.
A good display is a bigger update than mere graphics update IMVHO.

Not sure if it’s “proper”, but I have a modest 43” Vizio with HDR and I’ve used it on an Xbox One S and now the Series X and some games definitely benefit from it. Even some of the backwards compatible games with “auto-hdr” look nice, though it’s not real hdr. Going from Skyrim on X1 to XSX with 60fps and auto HDR was treat, but that’s just one example.

I'm not paying stupid money for a feature like HDR. When you can get 1000 nits Dolby Vision for ÂŁ299 then I'll see what the fuss is about.

A good display better than a bad display? I'm shocked

AND also, HDR is not that big of a deal. Most of times is just increased contrast and more color pop.

But higher color volume and scenes with both birght and shadow detail? Where??

SDR is always better crafted, and I'm not really sure if for games, paying the HDR prices is really worth.

Speaking fro my eperience with LG C9.

Watching the same game on my back room LGCX on PS5 compared to the front rooms Sony X90c PS4Pro there's a striking difference in quality in both blacks (naturally) and HDR but it's only really noticeable when you can see both games one after the other, when I was playing my Pro on the Sony I still thought the picture was class

Correct. If you play Dirt 5 on a great tv with great HDR. There are some moments in the race that have some of the best visuals I have ever seen in any game period. Youtube videos , don't do Dirt 5 justice at all. The same with Gears 5.

It's a weird one. I've had my OLED for a few years now that I take it for granted. It's only until I watch/play on normal TVs I realise how good it is.

i have HDR tv and yes HDR is better but you can still enjoy games without HDR. just like you can still enjoy movies/TV shows without HDR.

when i got my TV i bought it cause it was 4K but HDR is a way bigger difference but still...if you can't afford a HDR tv don't feel too bad. games will still look great for you :)

Have an LG OLED and hdr very often looks worse. Not many devs really do hdr content properly / correctly and most of the time the picture looks better with it off. Valhalla seems to be the worst offender i have seen on next gen.

yup, games are hit or miss when it comes to HDR. if it's done right it looks great but if not then it might be better to play in SDR.

You need an OLED, bro.

yeah, if they think HDR looks good on a QLED then i'd love to see what they think of HDR on an OLED. sure QLED's ain't terrible TVs but they don't have as much control over brightness/contrast as an OLED. yeah OLED can't get as bright as QLED but it can get way darker. QLEDs use a local array dimming set up which gives a lot of blooming/flickering where as OLED can turn off individual pixels. a QLED might dim a SECTION of the screen which means some pixels that are meant to be black are still being lit up. OLED can have 1 pixel at 100% brightness and the pixel right next to it at 0% which of course means an infinite contrast ratio.

What? Calibrate the HDR settings to your liking on your tv, problem solved.

I'd honestly prefer HDR to be an in-game toggle instead of a general on/off feature in the OS, so that if a game has a poor HDR implementation you can turn it off in the settings menu for that particular title, instead of having to turn it completely off for the rest of the content where HDR does indeed look well.

remember if you do get a HDR TV/monitor that just because it says HDR on the box doesn't mean it's gonna be good. HDR isn't created equally as there are different standards. you have HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, HLG.

HDR is measured in different ways and therefore has different levels. It's measured in brightness, colour gamut, dimming technology, black level, and latency. so you could have a display that only does 400nits with sRGB across the entire screen and therefore illuminates blacks. it would still technically be considered HDR so that'll be slapped on the box. Of course, that kind of display wouldn't be able to match the quality of display that can do 4000 nits, Rec. 2020, and has control at pixel level meaning they can be turned off completely for infinite contrast ratio.

my PC monitor was advertised as being HDR but it fucking sucks. well honestly it wouldn't be so bad if it could dim blacks. it's basically the same as the first example i gave above. 400 nits, srgb, and full screen illumination. my TV can do up to about 800 nits, rec 2020, and since it's OLED has infinite contrast. the difference is night and day. i never turn on HDR with my monitor but will always watch movies in HDR when i can on my TV.

Came from PS4 Pro and FullHD Sony LED (2012 no HDR + bleeding) to PS5 and 4k LG OLED CX 48.

Does it look better? Yes
Do I really like this setup? Yes
Is it an absolute game changer? No

It's not a day / night difference, people without a HDR capable TV shouldn't be ashamed. To be honest, I expected more. It's nice to have, but not necessary.
