Sure, but then why should I bother even owning a PS5 at that point? In your scenario, I'd be better suited with 2 PS4s. Sony isn't making me feel great about owning a PS5.

Also, it's not a $10 upgrade. It's either you buy the $80 version to get both games to begin with, or if you want to play the PS5 version later you have to buy it outright for $70. If you only buy the PS4 version of the game for $60, your only "upgrade" costs another $70. This shit is literally insane.

You'd still be playing the PS5 version of the game on your PS5, that's why you own it - the non-exclusivity on Horizon was announced before the PS5 launch.

Honestly though, I'm just playing devil's advocate, the version nonsense makes my head spin and I would never pay for an upgrade in anyone's shoes. I would bet they'll add an upgrade path for $10 or whatever but it's kinda nutty they haven't detailed that here. And sadly, this shit will continue while people pay $260 for a version of the game that comes with no disc, but some model that cost maybe $5 to manufacture.

Yes, I did this with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. I bought the physical disc for PS3, and it included the rights to download a digital copy of the game to PS Vita. I really thought that was a great thing for them to offer!

Sony also sold a physical PS Vita version for about $10 less, that did not include cross-buy with PS3. On the surface, this might look similar to what they are doing today. However, there are some key differences

  • PS Vita and PS3 used very different types of physical media. (This is why cross-buy was only offered for the PS3 version, and gave a digital download for Vita.)
  • Competitors were not offering similar cross-buy features at that time, whereas Microsoft has been promoting their own cross-buy for the last few years.

As it is now, PS4 and PS5 use very similar media, so that's not an excuse anymore.

With Microsoft pushing cross-buy and extending it to physical releases, it should inspire Sony to do the same thing. Otherwise, it causes consumers to believe that Sony is either very greedy and/or technologically inferior by comparison.
Another awesome thing was seeing the PS3 version of Portal 2 come with a Steam code. I played it on PS3, sold it later but still have it on my Steam account all these years later (y)

Nah fuck that. Sony's policies are dog shit compared to Xbox. The more people are made aware of this the better. Sony policies should be clowned because they're awful.
I think this attitude is silly. Buy the version you need/want. It's so friggin simple. Yes the PS5 version is more, but it's also more work to create a PS5 game (higher poly models, higher res textures, it simply takes more time and resources, period). This just doesn't bother me.

it will all be forgotten in a year or two when the PS4 is basically dead and buried too, so all this faux outrage is energy poorly spent. And if you actually ARE outraged by charging more for a better and more advanced piece of software ... not sure what to say.

I pay yearly software licenses for some products, over 100 dollars a year in some cases for things like an IDE. And I have multiple software products I do this with. Paying an extra ten dollars to forever own the better version of a game is nothing.

They're just on a roll lol. Let's see how else they piss people off next week. They've lost touch of reality it seems.

dude read the article it says PS5 launch games will have free upgrades and those games were spiderman miles morales and sackboy. Those two had ps5 versions as free upgrades if you bought PS4 version. Horizon FW isn't a launch PS5 game period!

I'm gonna say even though there are millions more PS4s this thing will sell the vast majority of units on PS5. so I don't give a crap.

They straight up said Horizon Forbidden West would have a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5 version and NO mention of this focused on Launch PS5 games only. In face they even said we know PS4 owners will upgrade to PS5 at different times so we are happy to announce these games INCLUDING Horizon Forbidden West would have a free upgrade path.

Sony ain't budging. PS5 games are 70, no free upgrade otherwise everyone buys the $60 PS4 version.

It's disappointing that a cross-gen game is being is charged $70. I am perfectly cool with next gen only games like Demon's souls remake, Returnal, Rift Apart being priced at $70 cos they were all next-gen only experiences. But charging $70 for cross-gen game experience feels bad. Not like this Sony!

This is fairly standard no? Microsoft have great value with Smart Delivery but to get both versions you buy an edition like the Mamba Forever NBA 2K21? Or the actual cross gen bundle in 22

If anything you can view it as a good thing. For those who still have no chance of getting a console they can buy the PS5 version in advanceand play the PS4 until they manage to get one. If you want the PS4 and PS5 version, but the cross gen bundle (labelled as digital deluxe, regalia or collectors edition) 🤷‍♂️

You'd think it would be EA and Activision but it's actually Sony who seem the most eager to drag the industry towards a £/$70 standard.

dude are you having issues with reading comprehension? just read the image on the tweet. It literally says "launch games will have free upgrades", what do you mean launch games? It means PS5 's launch man.

For many games, buying the next gen version also gives the last gen one.

Oh I see... so because Sony delayed the game out of the launch window its OK for them to now charge for the game they said would be free originally. Sound logic Dude!

I don't think they intended to mean Horizon as part of the launch. I'd say the sentence can be a bit confusing for some but not for me. I always understood that Horizon was never part of the launch plan ever.

System launch: Smart delivery is a joke because it's putting a marketing gimmick name on something so basic, so obvious, so easy to do that it doesn't even deserve a name. This is obviously a built in part of every system and you're a moron for even naming it.

1 year later: PS5 doesn't even need these features, and it's cool if they double charge games, charge $20 for both, or constantly change their policy each game and consistently increase the price of everything, without seamless and reliable cloud saves.

Just because other publishers are doing it doesn't mean it's good. It's greed all around.

It's amazing that you spin it as a good thing lol. It's good that you have to pay $20 to secure your digital PS5 title rather than just being able to upgrade down the road for free or in Sony's case in the past $10 rather than $20... The bootlicking lol

Your literally picking out third party games, MS cant control that they even said if a company wants to do Smart Delivery they can do, from top of my head the only games to do this was COD and NBA but seems other companies a trying to follow suit to get more money, majority though just add the upgrade with the Xbox One version for free

There is a $10 difference between versions.

PS4 version: $60
PS5 version: $70

So you indeed need to pay $10 for the upgrade if not everybody will buy the PS4 version instead the PS5 one.
I was on Twitter and I noticed the outrage and people talking about Sony being anti-consumers. I had no idea the PS4 version was $10 cheaper and that you can upgrade by basically paying the cost of the PS5 version.

I was pissed at the 10$ upgrade for Ghost of Tsushima, but THIS is a non-issue.

The PS5 version is $10 more. PS5 games are more expensive, you might not like it, but that's what happened. So if you want the game for both consoles, you pay the extra $10 the PS5 version costs.

Ghost of Tsushima felt like a cash grab because of what offered for those extra $10. If you're pissed at the $70 price tag, fine. If the games were the same price, I'd understand being pissed at the lack of free upgrade. But they're not.

Bro..

If you want both versions you have to pay $20 for the digital deluxe edition. Not just $10.

If you buy disc or digital standard there's no option at all to upgrade. Not even $10. You have to buy the game again for full $70

PS5 games cost $10 more than PS4 games, people shouldn't be expecting games to upgrade for free, if they did we'd all just buy the PS4 version and upgrade it after it's downloaded for free. If and when games are upgraded for free just look at that as the exception not the rule. If the console weren't able to play PS4 games this wouldn't be an issue but since it is you have to take the good with the bad, PS5 games just cost more. That being said if they are making you buy different editions just to have a path to upgrade? that seems a bit stupid to be honest they should just let you pay the $10.00 so something should change there.

Oh, so it's more expensive? I thought the price for the PS4 Deluxe Edition was $70

Where did I say it was good? The point was there is precedent, whether you like it or not. Microsoft have had to make up ground so the easiest way to do it is via software value add and they committed to that with their first party titles. With respect Sony aren't in that position as the then market leader.

Regarding it being better, if I'm a PS4 owner at the moment and I can't get a PS5. I can either wait a while and get the PS5 version, or get the PS4 version now and rebuy it later. Or I can buy a deluxe edition for a little extra that gives me the instant gratification and also the future version when I inevitably pick up a PS5.

You can think what Microsoft is doing with Smart Delivery is a great feature, without thinking Sony are devils for following a different but equally valid model. Or did you expect to trade your VHS in for blu rays? and your cassettes for CD's?

Think about it - if I buy the £60 version and then there's a £20 upgrade to PS5 optional patch. Is that horrific?

Would you rather they just charge 70 bucks for ps4 version as well and then be shared?

this is going off the assumption that the ps4 version is cheaper. Way too lazy to research this.

IntentionalPun

Ask me about my wife's perfect butthole
Seriously would have just been simpler to price the game at $70 on both PS4 and PS5... probably less outrage too.. it's just a price hike for new games at that point, why even differentiate at this point when it's not like the PS5 "version" was somehow more expensive to produce.

I'm sure their argument would be it's not about cost but "value".. PS5 version is the better game, so why shouldn't it be more expensive? Why shouldn't getting both versions be even MORE expensive? Value is higher.

But gamers don't really think that way and it seems like a whole lot of controversy for not much return.

Only thing I can think of is they suspect supply of PS5s will start outpacing demand next year and so it's a carrot on a stick to just go ahead and upgrade.. but I doubt that.

i'm actually imagining how this kind of move would translate on pc...that would be something like :
30$ for low settings edition
50$ for medium settings edition
70$ for high settings edition
100$ for ultra settings edition
110$ DX12U edition
150$ Nvidia RTX IO DLSS edition

Your getting the PS5 edition for $70 and than paying $10 for the PS4 edition with bonuses 😆

I don’t see the issue here, people will complain about anything, everything can’t be free.

People keep bringing up the Series X like you could even get a game of this level on the Series X right now…. 😆
What level? And this game isn't out till next year anyway.
