The much-hyped 'Ultimate Middle-Earth' 4K Collection isn't so ultimate...

Up for pre-order now. $250 for the EXACT SAME 4K sets that were released last year, and one new bonus disc that just has the 2001 Cannes reel (which has an introduction with Peter Jackson riding in Gandalf's cart, shows the entire Moria sequence and then some early TTT/ROTK footage) and the Alamo Drafthouse cast reunion video.

NO appendices. NO new special features from Jackson or the people who made the appendices. TWO HUNDRED FORTY NINE US DOLLARS.

Wonder who this is for. I'm sure any serious collector would look for the new special features and anyone that wanted 4k would just get last year's version.

Is there any written material that takes place after the LOTR books?
There was a few pages written by Tolkien (like 7 or 9?). Where he paid out the general next steps but he never wrote the book. My understanding was that it was about their kid or grand kid going bad or something as the memory of evil is lo g since gone due to their long life spans.

Supposed to be another bad in the background too but I don't know. I've never read them.myself so I could be out to lunch

Didn't they tease they were going to touch up some of the cgi or something?
No they did that with the 4Ks last year. All they did was adjust the color a bit so the CG doesn’t stick out as much as it did at the 4K resolution. They also adjusted the color timing on the entire Hobbit trilogy so it matches LOTR better. All 100% supervised by Jackson.

It doesn't have the awesome additional material from the DVD special editions? Has it ever been released on BD? That stuff is SO good it you want to know how these movies were made, and there's SO much of it.

The Blu-Rays included the Appendices, but they weren’t in HD.

Ahh thanks, I haven't had a chance to watch mine yet :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Maybe a lazy question, did the 4k sets released last year have the Appendices? I was under the impression that they didn't... and that the purpose of this new collection was to include all of that stuff as well? I had held off on the original Blu-Ray and 4k sets because I have the extended DVDs that have all the special features, and wanted replacement 4k sets that also included the special features.

No those sets had no extras. No appendices. This set has the exact same discs as last year in one box with a single bonus disc.

Heh - that's a bad joke. Are WB hoping to triple dip with a "Fully Complete Ultimate Middle Earth Collection" at some point?

Probably not. Jackson has over 12 hours of NEW Appendices and WB told him “no” when he wanted to put them out in this. They’re not interested in spending a penny on LOTR. The secret is the people running WB don’t like the movies because the people responsible for their success are long gone.

The new covers look pretty good.
I have the LOTR steel books and I am happy with that. If this had new appendices or something I would consider it. It is odd that Jackson would have extra material and they would turn him down. I mean it exist already so put it on the disk.

It should be noted that when you redeem the new 4K editions that some of the bonus features do show up in movies anywhere.

i've never actually owned a full collection of the movies! i had Fellowship on VHS and Two Towers on DVD but that's it. Over the years I've just watched them on tv, at a friends, or rented them online through Amazon whenever I wanted to watch them. I remember i was about to buy the blu ray box set of LOTR but if i remember right the movie(s) had a tinting issue.

Even then I wouldn't buy this cause I'm done with buying physical media. It's a waste of plastic and paper. I have some old blurays I watch on my PS4 sometimes. I don't have a 4K player and probably won't get a Xbox Series X any time soon so yeah... and anyway this thing is £200 here! I like LOTR but don't need all that extra content. Shit, I don't even need those Hobbit movies. If I ever feel like buying anything it'll be the extended LOTR movies from Apple TV for £25. those are 4K with HDR too.

I wanna see the footage that didn’t even make it into the extended editions. They don’t need to be inserted in the movies I just want to see them. The Moria orcs chase the fellowship into the Elven forest for example. Let’s see it .

I have the LOTR & Hobbit 4k sets in my collection, but I don't need this monstrosity

It'll probably be worth a ton of money someday. Can't imagine there'll be a lot of units produced. It's a niche format as it is, and this set is for a small subset of the niche
