PS5 console will not play certain games and also sometimes overheats...any ideas?

Did you actually try the one which is working in the same exact outlet as the one which is failing ? I would first try swapping them in their entirety and see if the problem follows the console or the location. Then try swapping cords (If its following the console)
Yes tried both consoles in same outlet. One console has the issue the other doesn't. I'm trying the "good" power cord on the "faulty" PS5 right now. Won't be able to actually test it until tomorrow though.

Can't believe you sent it in to SONY for repair and they sent it back saying they found nothing wrong with your unit. That's incompetence. Unbelievable.

Do you live in EU? With the European warranty you get to choose between getting your console repaired or getting a new one, and during the first 6 months there's not really much SONY can do to refuse your choice.

Nope good ol USA. Someone probably powered it on and saw it working just fine and called it a day. Like I said I'm going to try a different power cord when I have time and if that doesnt work I'll be sending it right back to them.

So glad I have an extra PS5. It took them nearly a month to do nothing to my console and send it back.

EDIT: I have already sent the console in to Sony for repair. They sent it back without doing any repairs saying they found nothing wrong with it.

To be clear here I'm just wondering if anybody else has had or is having this issue, or has an idea of what's happening. I've already described the issue and sent my console in for repair. Sony found nothing wrong with it and sent it back without any repair. I already tried all the normal things like reinstalling the OS and factory resetting and such. Same issues remain.

So what happens is my launch PS5 will crash after anywhere from a minute to 45 minutes or so but only for some games. Examples of games I know I cannot play are Resident Evil 8 (PS5 version only, the PS4 version will work on the PS5), Arcadegeddon, and Ratchet & Clank. These are just the games I own I know won't work. I'm sure there's countless more. Games I know I can play without issue are Fortnite and Genshin Impact (PS5 versions).

What happens with the games I can't play is I'll load one of these games and usually within 10 minutes the game will crash with error code CE-108255-1. This is a generic error code and happens fairly regularly with all games. The issue is it will happen with the games I mentioned 100% of the time making them unplayable.

The other issue I have is that my console will sometimes overheat at the point where the power cord plugs in to the point it will burn you if you hold your finger on it. It gets extremely hot. There doesn't seem to be a direct connection with the overheating and the error code crashing. Sometimes the power cord receptacle area will be a perfectly normal temperature when the crashing happens. It may of course be indirectly related but I have no idea. Also there is no overheating message whatsoever when the power cord area does overheat. Sometimes the console will suddenly power off though with absolutely no warning at all. It simply powers off the same as if you were to pull the plug out from the back of it.

So, any ideas?? Anyone else having these crazy issues?

TL;DR PS5 will not play certain games and will crash with an error code within minutes when I try. Console will also seemingly randomly get extremely hot at the point where the power cord plugs in to the point it will burn you if touched. These 2 issues don't seem directly related.
Did you tell them which games caused the crash? How many devices do you have plugged into your wall?

Did you tell them which games caused the crash? How many devices do you have plugged into your wall?
Yep told them those games specifically and I'm sure theres more. 4 things in one power bar and then tried a different outlet/bar with just the TV and console.

I guess I have really good luck with consoles

So far this generation I've seen 1 glitch and 0 hardware issues
I've got both and they both do annoying shit. Nothing serious. I know when I try to get back into demon's souls after turning the console off, the game will freeze.

And sometimes the series x will start up in a stupidly low resolution. Like 480, I believe by the looks of it. It won't let me change it in settings. But, I turn it off and back on, and it works fine.

They both have minor hiccups, but nothing I wouldn't expect from brand new hardware that's never been this complicated in a console.

Record it with your phone and show them the shit. Go to the neighbour, plug it in there and check it. If not working, then draw a pentagram on the floor and dance around it, it might help to draw out the ghost from the shell.

I don't believe that's quite accurate. I'm in Sweden, and I'm pretty sure the law is something like they have up to three attempts to repair the thing, and if they can't they have to give you a new one. They don't have to unconditionally give you a new one right away.

that is true but they didn't even try to repair in this case

Well, I'm a lawyer and even though I have to admit I just don't know how Sweden has decided to regulate the matter the European Directive is clear about it, and Sweden has the obligation to transform that Directive into a Swedish law. My country certainly did and that's the law I use for my work and the one courts take into account (art. 119 RDL 1/2007). Since it's a Directive and not a European Regulation there could be small differences in the way each country implements it, but the basics should remain the same.

Have a look at:

DIRECTIVE (EU) 2019/771 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 20 May 2019 on certain aspects concerning contracts for the sale of goods, amending Regulation (EU) 2017/2394 and Directive 2009/22/EC, and repealing Directive 1999/44/EC

Specifically at the article 48:

As regards bringing goods into conformity, consumers should enjoy a choice between repair or replacement. Enabling consumers to require repair should encourage sustainable consumption and could contribute to greater durability of products. The consumer's choice between repair and replacement should only be limited where the option chosen would be legally or factually impossible or would impose costs on the seller that would be disproportionate, compared to the other option available. For instance, it might be disproportionate to request the replacement of goods because of a minor scratch, where such replacement would create significant costs and the scratch could easily be repaired.

As I said I did that. They found no issue with the console and sent it back unrepaired after nearly a month lol. I'm more just wondering if anybody has the same issues or knows what could possibly be going on.
You need to send it back until they replace it or repair it. Otherwise, you are stuck with a busted system.

I recently had three HARD crashes over the course of about 3-days. I was a few hours into a session and it was just a complete and sudden power down as though my system was plugged into a light switch that was quickly turned off. The first was during a Ghost of Tsushima session. I had the flash shutdown and the system was completely unresponsive. I unplugged and re-plugged the power and it booted back right away. My first instinct was heat but it didn't seem any hotter than usual. There was no error report upon reboot and I did not get the "Your system is too hot" screen ahead of the crash. I called it a night at that point to give the system as rest and it was fine the following day on a shorter play session.

The 3rd day it happened playing Alien Fireteam Elite after a 2-3 hour session. This was identical to other crash only I decided to try and keep playing after the unplug/plug fix got it back up and running, more to see how it responded than anything. Another crash occurred within 30 mins and I called it a night and hit the internet for some research. There's not much out there documenting these styles of crashes. A friend suggested a system wipe back to factory defaults to clear up any potential software causes but I opted for the lesser Safe Mode/Rebuild Database as a first step. It's been a week and I've had some loooong sessions with zero issue in each of the games that I experienced them the first time.

My first instinct was instantly "heat" as the culprit, but in hindsight that doesn't seem to have been the case at all. Not sure if this is helpful to you OP, but I feel your pain and concerns. Maybe this can help someone else having similar issues to me.

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
Do you keep it in a tv cabinent or close to other heat sources (electronics?) It sounds like to me that it's overheating. Make sure it has open air flow. Try changing the orientation of it.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
dead hardware, get a one on one replacement ASAP.

My launch PS5 plays any game with no issue and my room is DUUSSSTTTYYYY as fuck.

Seems like its a hardware issue.

I wonder if it's because I got my PS5 later so most of the kinks were worked out.

The thing works flawlessly. I remember being scared to try rest mode after hearing that's where people were having problems, now my console is always in rest mode with no hiccups

No kinks have been changed. But there's something up with the PS5. So many people report issues and others have no issues.

If it doesn’t then there’s probably something awfully wrong with its heat sensors and/or pretty much everything else

That sucks. I had a similar problem wih my One S. One game just didn't start no matter what i tried and another one crashed 9/10 times after a few minutes. Everything else was running fine. Luckily with Microsoft Advanced Exchage you are not dependend on some goodwill. I would insist on reparing/exchanging it. Perhaps you can try to talk to your vendor. If it's Amazon chances are high that you at least get your money back.

I used a different HDMI cable in the beginning that would overheat the plug of the HDMI cable so that i couldn't even touch it. The console also started to shut down more frequently. After i went back to the original HDMI cable i never had a problem again.

Do it again. They have to do something under law if your claim is valid. Make video’s if it helps to back up your claim.

Also, how did you position/ place your PS5? Is it houses in a cabinet that may impair the ventilation?

Specifically at the article 48:

Alright, but that still seems to leave the option open for the retailer to choose repair over replacement:

"The consumer's choice between repair and replacement should only be limited where the option chosen would be legally or factually impossible or would impose costs on the seller that would be disproportionate, compared to the other option available."

The cost to replace a PS5 might be considered "disproportionate" compared to sending it in for repair.

Edit: Here's what the Swedish consumer agency says about it (this particular article is aimed at the seller):

"You have the right to try to remedy the defect. This can be done via, e.g. repair or replacement with another equivalent item. For example, if a shirt has a defect, the best option might be to replace it with a new one. However, if instead the lock to an oven door broken, a repair is probably best solution. Whether the defect is to be repaired or the item will be replaced with a new one, the correction must be implemented “within a reasonable period of time” from the date on which the consumer filed the complaint. A reasonable period of time can be described as the time it normally takes to repair or replace an item in a particular industry.

If you choose to repair the item, you have two repair attempts to fix the defect. If the same defect occurs a third time, the consumer has the right to turn down another attempt. If there are several defects in the item, you may be entitled to perform more than two repairs."

Are you saying this doesn't comply with EU law?

Nope, I get zero error messages about overheating. Never had one. I was told that the heat sensor was in another area/for another part of the console so it wont give that error message if it's the power area thats overheating. I dont know if thats actually true but is what I was told by the rep I talked to over the phone.

Yep that sounds exactly like what happens to mine also seemingly completely randomly. I'll be in the middle of a game aaaaand it's off. Always confusing at first lol like wtf just happened???

Next time if you think about it pull the power cord and see if the power receptacle is hot. If it happens to have that issue as well be careful though because it will be extremely hot. It will burn you. I dont know if mine was hot like that every time it crashed like yours is doing or not. It may have been but I didnt know to check for it when it happened before.

I think it has several sensors placed in different areas but if its coming from your power supply it sounds like something that should be replaced by Sony.

You might have cockroaches in your PS5s power supply, its not that uncommon that they sneak into those areas and create all sorts of problems. At least I’ve heard of people living in some areas of the globe having those problems :p

I have another PS5 in the house that works perfectly fine. I've tried different outlets putting it in open space etc. It's some issue with the console itself, apparently nobody has any idea what exactly though.
Swap all the cables and replicate the exact setup from your other PS5. If same issue is there then send it back again to replace not fix.

if sony isn't gonna fix it for you then send it back to whoever you bought it from. tell them it's not working and you want a refund. the retailer will send it back to sony and then sony can go fuck themselves. buy a new PS5 when you can.

If it was me, I would have done. How are they supposed to replicate the issue if you didnt include the software? There are loads of cases of games like Returnal not working on the console. Definitely something wrong with the PS5 hardware.
You really think Sony doesn’t have access to their own games?

I'd call them back and when speaking to a representative, just be be very firm. You can also ask them, what exactly did they test to say nothing was wrong with it?

RE8 is not a Sony game smart guy. If you say your console doesnt work with a specific game, might be an idea to include it when you want it testing.

As far as I know Sony has repair centres where you are based and there seems to be some sort of corruption / mis-management with the place it's going to for repair.

Where do you live? I would contact Sony and complain about the repair service as nothing was done, also take videos of your problem and get an email or something to send them to. There is more you can do with a little persistence. It sucks but fight it and don't give up.
Definitely. This machine is under warranty and they need to fix it. Since it can be proven that it's broken I wouldn't let the issue go. I'd call their customer support and complain.

File a complaint with Sony and contact the better business bureau. A complaint with the BBB will
go to protect your rights as a consumer. They’ll make them sort it out. If anything, contact and get another rep. Tell them what they did wrong and that it is still causing you issues.

The BBB is the Yelp! of the the 80's. I don't think they can enforce anything, they just give you a rating that virtually nobody cares about. Check here for more info: https://www.bbb.org/frequently-asked-questions

Same, the only issue I had when it came to a next-gen console was that my Series S would turn off whenever I played Cold War when it was first released. But it was a software issue, not a hardware issue.

My wife always contacts the BBB when she files a complaint about a company. She also contacts The Federal Trade Commission and the states Attourney General’s office. She really tries to sink her teeth in. She had Plus renew on her and they told her if she had the bank reverse the charge her account would get banned. She contacted a lot of different agencies and she got what she wanted. A refund and her account wasn’t banned. Did I tell her that was in the ToS? Yes, but she didn’t like how it was automatically set to auto renew.

What kind of testing does Sony do where the customer can demonstrate the issue in 10 minutes and they can't see anything wrong?

Something is fishy here.

OP, are you using a digital or physical copy of these games?

Could be any combination of factors. I live in a 3 story victorian mansion with foot thick walls, on the 3rd floor. And my landlord supplies wifi. The routers down stairs and I have an extender the ps5 is wired to. I wondered if it could be disconnecting from the server. The ps5 isn't automatically connected when I turn it on for some reason. My Xbox doesn't do that. I was considering a mesh extender but I can't find out if I'd have to replace the existing router or not.
