Naughty Dog Explains Why It Likely Won't Make Another Jak and Daxter Game

....i didnt realize there was slow walking with all the murdering of WLF members, scars, dogs, zombies etc
I'm on a replay, believe me you'll notice it more the second time around because you want to "play" more as the details of the flashbacks lose all interest.

The first game was much better paced, I don't think there is a cinematic that lasts more than two minutes, the down time between encounters is more reasonable, etc.

Now, that other guy was clearly trolling, the game is great, there is just way too much fat for it to be as enjoyable in a replay.

Jak was always easily overshadowed by R&C imho, so it's all good. TLOU and Uncharted are also much better imho. Not that I disliked Jak, it's just not on the level of the other stuff they've worked on recently and the competition of its own day.
Jak beat the shit out of Ratchet in sales and mindshare initially. It was after 10-12 months after Jak II and Ratchet GC came out that Ratchet GC caught up and passed Jak II and things flipped.

Daxter won on PSP though.

Basically, if you want to play some kiddy shit with no substance, crap graphics, and just regular video gamey shit, there's an entire industry out there for you.

ND only makes visceral masterpieces now, good.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
because its a BOOMER IP.

They need to attract young generations of consumers.

Its common sense.

To the people that correlate "kiddy stuff" to something negative that can't possibly be visceral, substantial and groundbreaking... that's super pretentious and quite frankly false.
You can absolutely take something that is light hearted and turn it into a groundbreaking showpiece technically, gameplay- and content-wise, and also make it immersive and visceral.

Not to mention you can also take a IP and change the tone. It has been done plenty of times.

Example:

This was Batman in the 60's

goofy, funny, not really serious, silly

This was Batman in 2008

the exact opposite

Thats reminiscent of pretty much all Batman movies: They're either epic or silly, but point is that it's still the same IP, meaning you can take the source material of something and turn it into pretty much anything you desire.

This is a terrible example as batman movies gradually got darker, even darker than your 2008 example.

Insomniac is two studios. And been going back to Rachet after every failure. Its dependable. These are the games between Resistance 3 - Spiderman ( a licensed game, that follows the batman formula)

Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One
Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault Outernauts
Fuse
Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus
Sunset Overdrive
Slow Down, Bull
Fruit Fusion
Bad Dinos
Digit & Dash
Ratchet & Clank
Song of the Deep
Edge of Nowhere
The Unspoken Feral Rites

3 of the Ratchet games on your list flopped.

They made 4 Jak games, and there was 2 more Jak games.
?

It's actually very simple: family friendly games don't sell as they used to.

And last but not least...fuck Abby.
Jak II and 3 aren't family friendly.

Guess jack and Daxter/Crash bandicoot isn't woke enough for them.
Activision owns Crash, so they couldn't make one if they wanted to.

I wish more devs did this. there is zero reason to be making kiddie games when you can make stuff like TLOU. Hell, i think even Uncharted is too kiddie for them.

And by kiddie, i dont mean platformers or games with cartoony art style, I am talking about the subject matter and core gameplay mechanics. Going back to uncharted feels so limiting after tlou2.

ND is a premiere studio like rockstar. it's like asking rockstar to make bully or top down grand theft auto games. no they have graduated. lets move on. lets push the medium. its not like ubisoft, ea and activision are going to do it. there are like 3-5 studios even capable of doing that, lets not have them make games that were made because they were limited by 20 year old tech.
Reminder that this guy likes Jason lol

I say good and if Sony decides they want a new Jak and Daxter give the IP to one of Insomniac Game's teams

I love Naughty Dog games for their combat and their realistic attention to details and animation on top of the story telling
I say give it to suckerpunch. I'm sure after ghost's success they're expanding the studio, probably to two teams at some point anyway.

Suckerpunch has plenty of experience with third person openish world platformers, and insomniac already has plenty of franchises they're working on.

This is all bullshit. They could make anything into a masterpiece given time. Druckmann is too busy creating characters like Abb... aaahh fuck it. Lost cause.

All they literally have to do is follow the template from the Precursor Legacy. Its the best one anyways.
Why can't he make the games he wants to make? Games are an art form. Just because you don't like it, doesn't make it bullshit.

He said he is 48, he wants to put whatever years he has left into something he is more passionate about, whether it's LOU3 or not. You get what you're given. It's such a self entitled mentality.

Oh yeah, I wasn't talking about sales - just my personal preference.

What you just said doesn't even make sense as you are missing my point. It's an example of how the exact same IP can be done completely different in style and attitude, characterization and dialogue.

btw. After Batman 89, Batman Returns (which is more melancholily dark and almost depressing than epic dark like other Batman movies in my opinion) and Batman Forever there was also this gem:
and this movie was absolutely goofy.

Nothing against these kinds of games but leave the kiddie stuff to others.

Also a game with some of the best third person combat I have seen in years is clearly much more than walking and cutscenes. I sometimes wonder if people even play certain games.

Another thing is a game does not need to be bright, colorful and cartoonish to be fun.

Where are you and others getting "kiddy" game from. Crash Bandicoot, maybe, but no way in fuck is Jak and Daxter a kiddy game.

But hey if you want to keep playing games like Uncharted and TLOU that have a plot on par with a b-tier movie, whatever.

Naughty dog grew up. Gamers didn't.

I don't really see much of a difference in Naughty Dog today versus the 90s. They chase industry trends for their core game concepts albeit with incredibly high production values. If 3D platformers were still in vogue, they'd still be making them.

Let's hope they don't wast their time with Jak and Daxter again. There's enough with Ratchet, Astrobot and Sackboy/LBP.

They must stick to Uncharted, Last of Us and games like that.

I mean, they dont even own the license to it right?

They'd have to buy that and I honestly dont know if thats worth the money at this point.
I played Jak 2 and Jak 3 this year, still great games (actually prefer 1 and 2 over 3) but I dont think a new one would have the same impact and commercial success today as it did back then.

And in any case, most people here would be unhappy no matter what they do. Lets face it, some are only here just to complain about everything anyway.

Oh they only make Abby, one of best characters last gen

Not surprised. ND is Sony's showcase studio, they wouldn't let them make a cheap gameplay driven Jump ’n’ Run. ND will make high budget cinematics as long as people and especially critics like them.

I disagree. I think you are being disingenuous here. If you don't like their style, that's fine but to say they are just walking sequences and cutscenes is just false. And there are so many other studios making other styles of games so you don't need to be into what ND does. It's perfectly OK not to like something — their games are far from being 'walking sequences & cutscenes' and I think you DO know that.
He knows, he is just trolling while forgetting he does not like these kind of games at the next Hellblade trailer for some reason. Surely you will not see him post rapidly about “yet another cinematic walking combat simulator…”.

Total fucking lol at all you lot wanting a studio like ND to make some kiddie platform game, take a wise lads c'mon, ND are one of the if not the top developers out there known for pushing the industry forward both technically and thematically and you don't get those sort of guys to make a platform game nor would they want to, leave that to the Wizards at insomniac.

Not to mention from a publisher perspective why would Sony want another IP that competes directly with R&C?

‘We sit and think long and hard, coming up with a myriad of ideas until we say…fuck it let’s just do another sequel?’.

Not a problem, but just say it. ‘What will push us and challenge us’ surely does not equal another sequel/DLC. Nonsense.

Thematically? Why? I don't disagree with the rest, but what themes did they aproach that were never done before?

It's not so much the originality of the themes, it's how they're portrayed and integrated into the wider scope of the game.

I have never played a game that has drawn me in so much that it has gotten my fat old ass of the sofa to go yell at the screen due to my emotional involvement with the characters and the scenes that where being played out, TLOU both 1&2 sit absolute leagues above everything else imo, I can't even recall any other game being remotely close to it's brilliance or how much it divides opinions, hell if you can reccommend me anything near to it I'd love to play it

Why would they compete? Just because both are Jump ’n’ Runs? I mean it's not like Sony has just one cinematic 3rd person action adventure. And it works.
Because why would you waste a resource like ND to go make a platform game when the game they do produce probably sell far more units than R&C, it's doesn't make any business sense whatsoever

I cant believe there are still people on gaming enthusiast forums that use terms like 'kiddy shit'. I also laugh at how things like 'facial animations, voice acting, graffixxx' are apparently indicators of a great video game or developer, even though they have minimal impact on actual gameplay. Imagine being a nerd about video games and posting on message boards but you write off an entire catalogue of games because of the aesthetic.

Breaking news :
Evan and Neil are grown ups now, they don’t want to play with their children toys anymore. Evan won’t even give his nana a kiss in public, and Neil has sold all his cascada albums and only listen to my chemical romance now.
(Which explains tlou2 edgy tone and lame revenge storyline 😂)

Ah ok, i understand now. I'm not a fan of their games but i do recognize the huge quality of them across the board. I can't recommend anything, because it is really not my type of game. I was confused about the themes itself, but i get you now.

It wouldn't take them 5-6 years or 150 million dollars. Just a smaller and faster project like LL.

If someone pitched them an idea where Jak is a trans woman now and how everyone is picking on him, I'm sure Druckmann would be way more into the idea.

nonsense. the real reason is they can't find a way to make the game and use it to push their bullshit.

the last of us was a fantastic game and we got TLOU2 because they can find a way to put their woke shite into it. loads of fans didn't even want a sequel because they felt the game wrapped up joel + ellie's story well. that didn't stop ND going ahead with it. do we need a TLOU3? nope but i bet you we'll be getting it rammed down our throats at some point.
