I just wanna quickly add, whilst playing this on both series x and ps5 I noticed the game runs super smooth for me until I hold the weapon wheel down to choose a different weapon. I then get stutters and this happens on both consoles. A quick load from last save fixes it but I’m not too sure why this is the case.

The gothic/medieval atmosphere and Reznor’s dark ambient is what makes Quake so special. Are there any other shooters that are as close to being a horror game like Quake in terms of ambience? I hope they keep it all intact. 🙏
Doom 64!

OT, I don’t think MS was obligated to release this on PS4, but I’m glad they did.

I didn't see anything woke in the two games I played, they were just not good IMO. Same with Doom 2016. All IMO of course.

I'm playing Doom 64 right now in ps4, and a really like the color palette, very diffrente from the classics. But the thing that make the games ambience trully shine is the music. Twisted and fucked sounds, babys crying. The one think a notice tough is that levels are less packed with enemies, probably due technical limitations

They should've done this for Quake 2 ... would love to play it on modern hardware

They did it like two years ago... Quake II RTX.

Granted it's a pretty different approach than this one. Quake Revitalized feels like a Remaster in the sense of a Criterion release, like a cleaned up, definitive version of the original work. Where Quake II RTX is more like a Star Wars Special Edition approach where we add a bunch of effects and enhancements, possibly at the expense of the original artistic vision.

Although it should be mentioned that you can run Quake II RTX with the original renderer and assets and it'll still support wide screen and play nice with modern hardware.

Quake 4 is better
Quake 4 should be forgotten fam.

This re-release should hammer home just how poor level design in FPS games have become. I'll take a full on remake of Quake 1 with an expanded lore, keeping it as close to the look and gameplay of the of original game, plus 2 mission packs please id. Give me multiplayer and a level designer too and I'll love you forever.

I wonder whether they will reboot the franchise and merge the world's featured in the first two games. I'd be interested in that as long as it keeps the time from the first game and as long as it doesn't have the movement system from Doom Eternal. I feel like the movement system in Doom 2016 would be perfect for Quake.

Unreal, Hexen II and the newer Amid Evil are worth playing but none of them has the same kind of atmosphere as Quake. The Quake mod Arcane Dimensions is a must though if you're haven't yet played it.

Nightdive are also remastering PowerSlave which is a great game from that era with an Egyptian setting that you might like, and while they aren't FPS games, Forsaken and MDK had the same kind of impact on me as Quake did when it released. Both great games.

Doom 64 is true Doom 3. It looks better than 1 and 2, but has the same DNA. It was less advanced than Quake though, because it was a Nintendo 64 console game.

I beat Scourge and Dissolution earlier. I enjoyed Scourge to some extent, but I found Dissolution to be drab. Didn't feel the Egyptian settings of Dissolution though I can't wait to see Powerslave Exhumed. And I felt myself mostly abusing the OP multi rocket launcher and Lava super nailgun. They are tougher than the base game, but not Thy flesh Consumed tough.

Now onto the actual new episodes.

This is good to know, cheers.

Looking at the various usual places for recommendations on getting this series running at its best, there's a few different options. Quake 2 seems to suffer, like 1, from music being semi-ripped out thanks to licensing issues. Does the RTX version have the soundtrack?

Grabbed it on ps5. Looks are runs great, if they can fix the aiming I'll tear up the multi-player but until then it's unplayable at such high speeds

Super disappointed quake 2 and 3 did not get the same treatment. Would be nice to have cross platform multi / coop on those. I downloaded them via ms store to check and doesn’t appear to be any Xbox live integration. ( or achievements)

I’m just hoping we get some good mods in that add on section. For doom we got some really great expansion episodes that I’m still making my way through today. I hope they go the same route with quake.

That being said having all of quake, expansions and also new expansions, that is a lot of content already.

With the remaster having a full port of Quake 64 as an add-on i'm hoping they wil port the Saturn version. That would be cool as not many have tried it
Did the Saturn port had exclusives levels or interesting stuff added? I know it's a miracle Lobotomy Software did pulled of when making this version of Quake, I can see why we got the N64 version port on this new release with the reworked levels, colored lighting and the different OST, but for the Saturn version... what's the point? (beside having a boosted framerate and cool new options of course)

The problem is that the Saturn version is on a completely different engine. Quake 64 was still made on the Quake engine.

100% true. Always loved Doom 64 from day 1. I actually would love it if, like they did with Quake 64 on this package, they release Doom and all its iterations from the Playstation version with the brilliant Aubrey Hodges sountracks. Surely that wouldn't be too hard to do considering they have Doom 64 and Quake 64 out now...

It took me nearly 20 hours to complete all levels (with expansions packs) and overall this game is still fun, but replaying quake 1 after so many years made me realize it's flaws.

IMO weapons in quake 1 are unbalanced. It takes forever to kill anything with standard shotgun and even double barrel shotgun isnt much better. In medium to long distance you can take your time and slowly kill most enemies with shotguns, but most of the time you fight in really close spaces, and because many enemies are really fast shotguns are literally useless (and especially if you fight this ugly looking jumping creatures). Nailgun is much better and lightning gun can kill even the strongest creatures in couple of seconds, so I had to conserve ammo for these stronger weapons and only use it for "close combat" situations.

It looks like ID software have quickly realized this problem, because Quake 2 was already perfectly ballanced compared to Quake 1 (shotguns in Q2 are awesome).

Yeah the double barrel is too weak and to compensate the ammo is plenty, you usually have 100. Its basically your pistol since there is no pistol in Quake. But there isn't really a viable shotgun replacement with that same close range power. Its probably the basic nail gun but there isn't that much ammo (the super nailgun is the machine gun).

You have to conserve nail gun for close range encounters against anything else than basic knights or marines, basically. The lightning gun is a Shambler and Vore killer but ammo is never plenty. Rocket launcher works on everything as well but has splash damage. The DLC kind of fixed this with more weapons (though some share the same ammo pool, but I liked the richochet rifle in Scourge), but I feel enemies are also more durable and faster there. The multi rocket launcher from the second pack is completely broken though, it annihilates everything.

I have yet to start with Dimensions of the Past, but its cool that this is brand new stuff.

Ray Tracing, like what was done to Quake 2... Quake 2 RTX
Thing with Quake II RTX is that RT isn't just a rendering feature, they actually redid all the lighting and materials/textures in the game. The textures are totally different.

It's amazing looking but it really isn't true to the art direction of the original game at all. You could probably do all that in a way that was more subtle and true to art but my point is it's a lot more work than just turning on an engine feature.

I would think most modern gamers would hate having to 'figure out' maze like levels with no quest markers to follow around.
I suspect you are right, but I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I would hope that faced with truly excellent level design, they would embrace it. Far too much is sign posted and telegraphed to say. Having to deal view our where you have or haven't been yet by the dead bodies littering the ground and the sounds of enemies waiting around the next corner is more immersive.

Hell, even Doom 2016 heavily sign posted the path with green lights. It worked fine for a linear game but it wouldn't work for Quake where there are multiple shortcuts in almost every level due the the necessity of backtracking. Even the way secrets are handled in Quake is better than the new Doom games. I hope the popularity of this re-release will embolden them to strip unnecessary shit away and give back to Quake minimalism. Worst case scenario they make directional arrows, maps, and HUD elements completely optional which I can deal with.

I'm one of the few that actually prefered Quake 2 over Quake. Love both games though, but the Sci-Fi setting was more my thing.
I'm sure Quake 2, and 3 probably, will get the Nightdive treatment at some point.

CTF on Quake 2 was godly. Especially on the 64 player maps with grapple guns. Playing as a Crack Whore or a Dalek with custom skins. Those were the days...

I think I technically have this on Steam but I'm not sure if I even installed it (the old version I mean).

I played this back in the day when I rented it on N64 but remmeber nothing besides the fact that I did enjoy it.

And what the fuck I never knew Trent Reznar did the music for this! My brother showed me some of the game on SX the other day and it looks fantastic and holy hell the music is amazing. Why didn't I know this game had such a great atmosphere??

Seeing this really makes me want Quake and/or Doom to really go back to this style of level design and art style. Would really love a return to the truly dark and surreal stuff.

And bring back Trent Reznar for a new Doom reboot soundtrack. Let him finish what he started but didn't get to complete with Doom 3!

Having a blast playing with splitscreen.

Just a shame I can't enable n64 OST without making a bethesda account and download an add on.
