Gabe Newell's favorite game and his Miyamoto fantasies

"I still feel like I can play a game from Nintendo and tell you what his (Miyamoto) role was on a particular project just by playing it and say: "oh, he did the first one of these and then they did the sequel and he had pretty much nothing to do with the sequel and you can just feel the difference. That's my conceit, I have never sat down with him and asked him: "Did you do this on this one and not do this." At least my fantasy of Miyamoto has been very important in my own thinking of videogame development." - Geek A Week Podcast

"Mario 64. Still my favorite game of all time. I still have vivid memories of all the different levels. The control is still pretty much unrivaled. It convinced me that games were art." - Computer & Video Games

Pretty based pick for all time favorite game tbf.

I love and respect the hell out of Miyamoto, but he's not as perfect as a lot of die hard Nintendo make him out to be. For example, he fucking ruined Paper Mario, and I will never forgive him for that. I have heard a lot of good things about TOK, so I definitely want to try it out, but enough bullshit, just give us a REAL followup to TTYD goddamnit!

Mario Sunshine has better controls lol.

When I played the recent Mario collection on Switch, Mario 64’s slippy slidey controls pissed me off. It wasnt as good as I remember. But I still love the game. Cant blame anyone for saying its their favourite of all time
Didn't play when originally released so no nostalgic feelings to get me through the slippy/icy feel of the controls and always feel like I'm fighting the camera. Was hoping for an alternative control scheme with All Stars but can't really get into it the way it is.

See, Gabe agrees with me that Mario 64 still has the best controls in any 3D platform. Its not an opinion at this point but a proven fact.

Mario 64 is the most overrated game of all time imo. I didn't really think much of it in the 90s and it just plays like shit now. The camera was horrible back then as it is now to.

Super Mario world is the best Mario and still plays amazing to this day and zelda OoT was the best n64 game in my opinion.

You're goddamn right

Mario 64 revolutionized the industry, but it had many flaws. And aged poorly because of them.

SMW on the other hand, stands tall to this day. Its perfect. Simply perfect.

Mario 64 revolutionized the industry,
The more people say this, the worse the N64 ages. Same with Goldeneye. It was a nearly failed console with so much artificial hype behind it and it failed everywhere except one place.

If the games were anywhere near as good it would have sold better without the press drool on its own merits but it didn't.

I'm not saying there weren't good games on the system, but not even the Dreamcast hardcore inject as much morphine in a dead corpse. One who's damage and consequences led to the worse performing Gamecube, and later caused Nintendo to abandon with the Wii.

According to that "logic" Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The last Guardian are among the worst games ever made due to their extremely underwhelming sales numbers.

No those games were not touted as the second coming for years with heavy hyperbolic reactions as game changing supermen that saved the planet and are the reason why you are still breathing today. The PS2 however was in many cases.

That was driving the N64 for years and it ended up basically underperforming everywhere, except the location most of the outlets doing the bootlicking came from. How curious.

Again not saying to throw your N64's in the trash, but when you make the super core Dreamcast fans look humble something is wrong.

N64 is better than PS1.

There's about 3 games I'd even play today on PS1. There's 10+ I still play on 64.

But I guess if you only care about sales charts you only play switch now?

Some big brain logics going on here

So you are trying to imply that the N64 "failed" due to it not having great games?

Good games are only part of the equation. Videogames are succesful or not due to many factors.

Even if it sold like shit and only had Mario 64, it would still be considered as a landmark game. Same with Dreamcast and Shenmue. Same with so many other examples.

Your "opinion" is so wrong, and sad, and wrong... And sad. It's sad honestly... And wrong.

Solid pick from Gaben, personally don't fuck with Mario 64. If the levels were a bit more interesting I'd rate it higher. But I respect the choice.

You seem to have a severe problem with Gabe's choice for the most influential game and I really wonder why. You also seem to have a very hard time understanding such a simple concepts as nostalgia.
Certain games will always be held close to the heart by certain people because of the time in life they have played them and due to all the memories they invoke.
If such games then also happen to have inspired an entire industry they will be remembered as legendary titles. Simple as that.

Maybe he has never played it and is just impressed they made it to 64 when his company can't get past the number 2.

If he had to wait until Super Mario 64 to realise that video games are a form of art he wasn't paying attention. 🤷‍♂️
