Is the hate justifiable for Call Of Duty?

I have really been enjoying Call of Duty: Cold War this year. I have the Series X version and have been enjoying the graphics, 120 FPS, etc. My question is whether or not the hate for the game is justifiable for the product. I am aware of the cheating issue but overall the game is solid. I purchased Black Ops 4 and skipped COD 2019. I do prefer Battlefield/Halo over Call Of Duty but to say that COD is garbage is unjustified. It does it thing very well. Do folks hate on COD because that's the cool thing to do on the internet?

Call of Duty and the studios behind the games are not bad. Most of the CoD games are beloved for good single player campaign and/or fun Multiplayer.

However, Activision is. Most of the hate is aimed directly at Activision shitty practices.

Campaign wise I don't think they've felt as good as the high points.

Most of the hate for multiplayer is borne of the fact that's its hard and sweaty and most people will struggle to break out the bottom tiers unless they put graft in. Same as FUT.

The hate is still mostly because of its popularity. It's just cool to hate on popular things. We saw the exact same thing happen with fortnite a while ago.

Call of Duty has always remained a very consistent franchise. None of those games were outright terrible, which is impressive considering how many of them there are.
I think a lot of people just struggle to deal with the fact that it's only normal to get bored of things eventually.

It has become more about the business behind it, the actual target audience and game stagnation that it represents and not about the quality of the games or the fun some people have with it.

A game like call of duty has a gigantic overlap with mainstream gamers that usually only buy Call of Duty, Fifa, Madden, maybe Ubisoft games and most people don't take the taste of those people serious as a measure of gaming quality, because they lack the variety and depth of masterpiece games that shaped the core and passion of the industry over decades.

Well put.

I used to be a prestige CODer back in the day of MW and MW2 and Black Ops. I think I dropped off at Black Ops 2 when I just started discovering different genres of games. I burnt myself out so much. The quality is always there and the sales speak for themselves. But as many have said before it’s the fast food of gaming along with FIFA. Same shit, you know what you’re getting every year but it’s pretty damn good. I never buy them anymore apart from MW reboot a few years ago. It was actually really good.

I'm mostly indifferent to COD.
Every now and then one will pique my interest. It's like the Madden/NBA 2K of FPS games.

I never understood fervent hatred for the series though. Far too many other titles to play and not enough time for me to care.

I don't hate the game, it just became more and more boring for me. Some new CoDs still have a nice campaign like WWII, MW2019 which I enjoyed. Cold War became so boring for me, I didn't even play through the campaign.
For the MP part, I like the idea of a fast and nice CoD like multiplayer experience, but in fact, they do make so many mistakes and wrong decisions, at least in my opinion, that I don't play the multiplayer part of the games anymore.

No it’s not. The hate that games like cod get on forums like this is generally because it’s popular, it’s not some niche Japanese game, it’s not an exclusive, and it’s an online multiplayer game with micro transactions and DLC.

it's the internet. people like to shit on things they don't like. if 1,000,000 people buy a game and 900,000 people enjoy it...doesn't matter cause if the other 100,000 don't like it then they'll kick up a stink. the people crying about CoD on the internet are a vocal minority and i bet majority of them haven't even touched a CoD game in the last decade.

the fact is that activision is going all in on CoD. y'know why? it makes them money. people are buying the game or spending money in it so that must mean that a lot of people enjoy it.

so no the hate isn't justified. i don't like CoD but i ain't about to deny how well it sells. just because i don't like it doesn't mean others don't or can't.

Players don’t take away from liking a game, you’re getting more modes than ever with COD today love the gun layout design in MW2019, Black Ops had an awesome story, things like Warzone and Zombies are optional the gameplay still comes alive to me in team death match.

Not really, they deliver every year consistently with a load of content and modes and have a great free to play game out too.

Pity about all the cheating and bad press they get but the devs work super hard.

The hate is not justified at all. Almost every year COD delivers. Hell I even liked Ghosts. The weakest ones are Blops 3 and 4. The campaign in 3 was nonsense, and 4 had no campaign at all. The MP was decent though and at least Blops 4 started the Cod battle royale.

That's how I know you're legit.... BO3 campaign was terrible 'you have to find the tree, no it's not the right tree, find another tree' FML

Who thought that was a good idea? hahaha

Sure. CW has been a terrible CoD game. I think they need to cut the campaigns in these games and just go all out on making robust multiplayer experiences.

I have enjoyed Modern Warfare a lot. The PvP is quite fun and I had fun with the campaign too.

I hadn't played a CoD since MW2 on PS3 like 10 years ago, so it was nice to come back to after all that time.

The core gunplay feels great. Lots of value in that game too, high replay ability.

The cheating is a shame tho. Gotta fix that shit soon.

Yes, we also should not buy from studios that treat their employees like complete shit, but in reality companies like Activision can kill someone and people will still support them to the fullest that's why the gaming industry is the way it is. No one takes accountability.

I mean, hate is subjective, so if people feel that way, sure.

I personally have a love for the series that has existed since COD and COD 2. Even with ALL of these iterations, there's a part of me that still digs COD for what it is. The ONLY AAA FPS that comes around with a different iteration every year.

Its twitchy-ness is the closest thing to an arena shooter that exists in the realm of AAA gaming, and I think that's another reason why I always wanna give the latest version a shot. Not to mention they're the closest thing to classic AAA FPS games that were norm back in the day. A decent/solid campaign, and a decent/solid multiplayer with a variety of modes. Along with some other game modes as well.

My biggest issue is that the series' consistency has really gone off the rails, and I think (as previously mentioned) that's a result of rotating devs and ensuring a new version releases every year. I can't help but feel like the games would be better with less hands in the cookie jar, and more time.

It seems odd to be concerned about hate for a franchise that has been the highest selling game of the year every year since 2007 (with exceptions for the years where Rockstar released a new game in which case it was the second best selling title that year).

I only buy 1 or 2 entries every gen but I've honestly enjoyed every COD I've ever bought.
They are usually fun to play, look pretty good and run well even on consoles, and they tend to be packed full of content with a single player, multiplayer and zombies modes.
In a way I guess they are like the Marvel movies of gaming to me, always fun but rarely truly remarkable.

I'm sure a lot of it is a " love to hate it" because it's popular and were on a nerdy gaming forum.

Everything popular in gaming is hates on these forums.

Personally I don't like COD because it feels like a product, souless. I enjoyed it over 10 years ago but I've moved on my tastes have changed.

I just got bored of the series by MW3, I completely ignored it throughout its sci fi phase, and I recently got back into it with Cold War which reminded me that I only enjoy the games now in short bursts.

I don't think its worth hating on just because its repetitive, its not like it has the monopoly on online FPS games like EA does with Sports games, so there are plenty of alternatives.

I love Cold War’s zombies mode. Wish Treyarch/Activision would focus on that. I couldn’t care less if multiplayer and campaign were abandoned.

It has tremendous productions values and the core shooting mechanics are unrivaled, but just like Battlefield, they play by safe rules and you end up with games that are too similar in their approach, year after year.

It is the quintessential conveyor belt game pushed out by a massive company where new ideas and approaches are held back in fear of ruining the model.

I don't mind people criticizing Call of Duty, believe me there is plenty to criticize when it comes to Call of Duty if you're a CoD player. We've had a lot of ups and downs, last few years multiplayer has suffered because of Blackout and Warzone and in general a shift to those modes. Vanguard looks like it might do more for multiplayer so that's exciting to see but we'll see.

This is NeoGAF/the internet. It's not limited to CoD. If the internet was a brain hooked up to one of those signal computers that lights up as different parts of the brain activates, except the lights were for hate instead of activity, you'd constantly see different parts sparking like a Christmas tree with flashing lights. CoD, Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, The Last of Us. Everyone hates everything all the time.
