Sea of Thieves had 4.8 million active players online in June

Because some people don't care about console wars but are more curious about why certain games connect, or whiff, with the public.

Being team green (or blue or red) shouldn't protect a game from criticisms or discussion. Not everything attached to giant mega publishers needs to be a cheerleading thread.
Are you serious? You know if this game was on team blue nobody would question the numbers?

Really cool this game is still having success. When it came to PC I gave it a chance, played it entirely by myself. I found the game to be incredibly peaceful and serene.

Its elite dangerous of the sea. Ocean wide inch deep. Fuck them for charging full price for an early access game years ago.

It's inspiring to see so many brave warriors turning out, making sure there's no confusion here:
  • Sea of Thieves is terrible and no one likes it.
  • Rare are lying - they didn't have 4.8 million users playing their game.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean is terrible and no one except "normies" likes it.
  • Fuck Rare for releasing the game nearly four years ago with limited content. Four years of high quality and active support doesn't mean anything! #StayAngryGamerz! Fuck Sean Murray!
  • Sea of Thieves has no legs - no one plays it and it's a dead game.
  • The game is only successful during big marketing pushes - unlike all other online games which stay at peak numbers 24/7/365!
  • Rare are fudging their numbers - 4.8 million active players doesn't mean what they want you to think.
  • Sea of Thieves isn't a real game, it's just a GaaS so it doesn't count.
  • Microsoft is just using it to push Gamepass and Gamepass is literally a scam!
  • Sea of Thieves has no depth - it's just an online pirate multiplayer game! Where's my persistent online inter-nation economy simulation and chicken breeding mechanics?

Yeah I spent most of my time sailing around alone on my little boat. Best part was parking it perfectly so that I could jump off without getting my feet wet.

All the salt for a game people can just sit, relax and enjoy.
Rare should do a Peter Pan crossover to keep it going for another year and a Monkey Island crossover after that to add another year of success.

The salt levels will be astronomical.

BTW, I am pretty sure SoT is between 10M and 15M units sold. Judging by the number of Steam reviews, it has sold 5-6M on Steam alone.

Sounds like it's successful and fun, which Rare is known for. To this day, I still love Banjo-Kazooie N & B.

The first POTC Tall Tale has a whole Monkey Island Easter Egg you get a commendation for.

I'll take gaslighting for 400 Alex.

The majority of your points are responses to things no one in this thread has said or even implied.

Considering Alex Trebek died in November last year, your post is just poor quality all around, isn't it?

The majority of my "points" are little more than copy/paste from posts across the four pages of the thread your posting in. Feel free to read some of them. I embellished for effect - Gamepass hasn't been called a scam in this thread, but we're trending in that direction.

Yep that pretty much covers the clown fiesta of Sony fanboys in here. The ones that in that other topic are getting triggered by a couple negative pieces on their favorite brand lately. How dare you speak ill of my Sony.

Mmm... I don't buy it. Something about this "Active" is directly correlated with GamePass mojumbo. I don't buy it. There's no way there's 4.8m active people playing this game.

What's their criteria?

the hyperbole in 100's of hours, the map aint even that big tbh and the islands are all small.

but to each their own if people enjoy long hours of sailing for no reason thats cool too.

just not my cup of tea
eh to each his own. Some people like to watch cutscenes of B movie quality for around 30 or 40% of game time and call it GOTY. Others like to kill prostitutes or run over people in games, others like to drive 1 mile and stop to take pics and post it on the internet, etc. etc.

Deserved success. Me and two of my kids and the wife regularly dip in and out of SoT. It’s pure immersive fun. I hope it’s supported for years. People acting like a game that has spikes is a bad thing? Why does GAF get so triggered over this game? At least people go back to it and I often drop a few quid on the season pass or cosmetics.

My take on why SoT gets so much hate is for two reasons;

1. It's a hugely successful MS first party game.

2. There is still bitterness over the acquisition of Rare that there is a desire for Rare to fail under MS ownership.

Jesus Christ. This forum hates this game even more than ResetEra does. And that's saying something.

Great game, pleased Rare have proved the doubters wrong. Continuing to support your game years after release is paying off.
I dunno man. Looking at this thread, I don't think the doubters are quitting anytime soon. People always find something to hate about every single game that Rare ever releases on Xbox platforms.

Everwild could come out with a 99 metascore and the haters will still find a reason to claim that Everwild is proof that Rare have been a shadow of their former selves ever since they left Nintendo.

The funny part is that Rare is still one of my most intriguing developers. I don't consider them failing here (But they haven't!) to be a death sentence on future games. Hoping Everwild gets figured out and turns into something great.

I recently started it with a good friend of mine and we are having a blast. Maybe one of my fave coop- expieriences. My favourite thing about is, there is zero grind ull have to do. Just enjoy the game and unlock your cosmetics. The frequency of the encounters is absolut reasanoble and for my taste doesnt feel empty at all. Also its the only game where playing "unfair" is a intendet part of the PVP experience. That sense of danger every time you have a lot of booty on your ship makes it even better, beside the fact i often get robbed/sunked by other players. It oddly remineds me also of MonkeyIsland 3, because as a kid i always dreamed about exploring that kind of a gameworld. Go give it a try with your buddy(s) and if you like pirates at all ull have to!

I started the PotC content yesterday, the first tale drags on a little bit. Will pick it back up tonight and see how the rest goes.

I didn't really enjoy the game a few years ago but having something specific to do helps me in that regard. I can believe the game is doing really well nowadays, seems to be much improved from the last time i played.

Every game fluctuates on the graph like that. The increase in players in June was bc of the POTC
Not as hard as a 40% decrease in a month for a multiplayer focused game... maybe Cyberpunk did, but that was another case entirely.
It feels like new players checking the game and deciding if it's their cup of tea or not.
I don't think we can call this game as "it has legs"...

I’m glad for Rare’s success but I’m still sad about what games they make. Game doesn’t look good esp. as a massive multiplayer game which doesn’t interest me.

You are only showing maybe 40%-50% of the player base with the Steam charts, so you could easily double the number of players. For the last several years for first party titles, Sea of Thieves general ranks behind Minecraft and Forza Horizon 4 and ahead of Halo 5 and Gears 5 on the Microsoft charts.

I've been playing since the beta and have over 2000 hours in SoT. The community is plenty healthy and there are always plenty of people to play with, with plenty of SoT groups, clans, etc. There are always 100-300 Looking For Games (LFG) posts for SoT. The only part of the game that is a little slow is the matchmaking in Arena mode for galleons, as there can be up to five galleons with four players in each and not everyone comes in with a full crew, so the matchmaking process can naturally be a little slow. Arena mode for sloops is much quicker.

Not every multiplayer game needs to do WoW, COD or Counterstrike numbers to be successful, have a healthy community and be profitable. Right now, Rare is working on new content for SoT, expanding the map, adding new islands to explore and new events.

It's 40-50% based on what? I took the data from Steam Chart.

No one is saying it needs to be CoD/CS levels, I was just trying to understand the claim of the player spike.
Even among my hardcore xbox friends, no one I know plays this,. same for Roblox, but Roblox has numbers to back it.

Seeing this thread today, in addition to someone posting about a bonus level-up in the official SoT thread, got me to jump back into the game today. Given all the Game Pass goodness lately I’d not played it for a couple of weeks. Before I knew it, I was once again drawn into the vibrant ocean setting and 3 hours had passed. I wasn’t around for the launch of this game, but I’m up to speed on it’s perceived shortcomings at that point. But now, to call it “feature rich” would be an understatement.. There is so much to do, and so many things I’ve not yet done myself.

Too bad about the negativity in this thread (the phenomenon of some folks being threatened/triggered/angered by the success of a game is strange), but thanks for spurring me on to get back into the world of Sea of Thieves!

You can't really blame them though. I mean, they probably dont even know what multiplayer games are anymore. Must be still stuck in those killzone days LOL

But it has only been sold through Steam since 2020, while it has been on Xbox, PC (Microsoft Store) and Gamepass since March of 2018. So showing only the Steam numbers only shows part of the picture. Anyways, the game is doing well enough for Microsoft to spend some big bucks to get Disney on board and be one of its featured games at this years E3 event.
