Almost a year is passed and VRR is still unavailable on ps5. It's time to say it's not acceptable

Also, I paid first world prices for first world features that should work as first work advertised. Some ppl man……

It’s clearly not stopping PS5 from outselling the competition. If they said it was coming, it’s coming on their time, certainly not yours. So maybe be patient.

Having more options is great. But whats not acceptable is letting devs release "next-gen" games with screen tearing. Not everyone has a TV with VRR to get rid of it.
I agree, VRR shouldn't be an excuse to release games with floating FPS. Stable FPS mode should be mandatory, with variable resolution if needed to maintain that, and additional mode with variable FPS for those few who own capable TV. VRR won't be something every TV has for many more years.

It’s whatever time SONY wants it to be. Not yours and not mine! Regardless of however long the system has been in our hands. When THEY are ready, they will release the update containing the feature.

Its the same as people begging for Half Life 3. They want it now for the past million years. It’s up to the VALVE if and when they want to release it. Not yours, not mine!

PS5 hardware supports Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) through HDMI 2.1. After a future system software update, PS5 owners will be able to use the VRR feature of compatible TVs when playing games that support VRR.

This was listed on their website since November 20th, 2020.


All they said was that the hardware supports VRR, and that the software currently doesn't support VRR, but it will after a future update. There is no reason to be uppity about this since they didn't say it was fully supported and available out of the gates.
 
Question for people with both Series x and PS5.
The Series x defaults in UI to normal mode then tries to go to game mode when starting a game. But only if VRR is unselected. If VRR is selected the Series X just defaults to Game Mode at all times Even with Netflix. (With My Samsung Q70.)

The PS4 Pro defaults to game mode in UI and games but will switch to normal mode when starting Netflix. But once leaving Netflix it goes back to Game mode in UI.
Does the PS5 behave this same way? If So I wonder if enabling VRR in PS5 will bork the switching as it does with the Series X.
 
LG OLEDs are just superior to Sony's TVs at lower price as well.
The gradation and picture processing is hugely better on Sony and their tv's have better QA. Ymmv on the Qa though.

The only win LG gets for me is currently hgig support. VRR is not useful because you can't use BFI simultaneously and VRR generally seems bugged atm on oled picture quality wise. Not even the lower lag on LG is a win because it has lower lag due to worse picture. And in the US, Sony is the only oled with heatsink. Using LG c1 atm, it's much worse than my A8h and it has grid effect which I can't get over. The upscaling and picture process was shockingly worse on LG.

That said i want to say sony needs to add vrr like they promised and if not there should be backllash.

LG are the best value for money hands down. If you want best picture quality then Panasonic are king!

I agree in general but Panasonic made a step back with newest JZ series while older series suffer from a bit annoying frame-skipping issues, mainly with Dolby Vision TV-led but also in HDR10 (very rare).

I had HZ980 for a moment, was super impressed with near-black handling and colors but then felt disappointed when LOTR 1 in Dolby Vision stuttered like 10 times during first 5 mins of the movie. Turned out it wasn't an issue on my end.

I'm tempted to go back to Panasonic at some point, as they took on all the tech and engineers from Pioneers television division when Pioneer left the tv market. I had a Pioneer PDPLX6090 back in the day and it was amazing to game on and watch films. I'm currently rocking a LG65C8 and it hasn't skipped a beat and have always loved WebOS.

How entitled. There are starving children in Africa still playing PS3 on their 1366x768 third world HDTVs and here you are complaining about 120Hz 4K VRR.

Sony isn’t cheating us out of a feature they promised…. they’re giving us the gift of perspective.

If that feature is that important to you my suggestion is to wait until that feature is available then buy the product. It's like when idiots preorder consoles with promises of unreleased games that may or may not make it or even get cancelled.

So you only have yourself to blame for purchasing a product that wasn't promised to have a feature you want at launch.

Sony deserves some criticism for VRR coming late in both the PS5 and their TVs.

It's also not that big of a deal, as there aren't really that many use cases right now... and they SHOULD BE COMING this year.

The End

Now if Sony never releases a patch because there was actually something flawed in their hardware? That's a much bigger deal, but we aren't there yet, and it's unlikely.

I'm sure that one % of people owning VVR ready TVs are indignated, for all those 3 moments per hour in which the frame rate drops from 60 to 55 fps.

Cross gen titles and building them with also pc in mind: those are serious matters, not this least-important one.

Notice it is fine. Trying to transform it in a big deal is just nonsense.
Play some games with tearing and come back here to say "VVR" it's not a big deal.

I ALWAYS buy consoles at launch, because, you know, I’m a gamer that will get years of entertainment from my purchase. I never once said I purchased my PS5 with anticipation of any certain feature. I knew full well it was going to be in a future update. I just never expected it to take almost a fucking year with still no date in sight.

Here is some advice for you. Let people who alend their hard earned money voice their displeasure instead of Stanning for your favorite bits encased in plastic. I’m a consumer, I have a right to call bullshit. Get over it.

Entitled? Lmao…. I’ve worked extremely hard in my life for anything and everything I’ve ever EARNED. How presumptuous and idiotic a statement.
 
Don't use VRR with the C9. it's broken and will turn your blacks gray. The only true fix is to hope lg's 2022 have a hardware fix for this issue. It's not a software issue, it's a voltage issue

I am a huge gsync fan. I've had g-sync monitors for forever. 240hz gsync, 144hz and later even 40-60hz 4k freesync.
And let me tell You what - vrr is almost useless on console. Here is why:
-VRR sucks on HDR tv's. Oleds gamma is correct only at 120hz, lower hz lowers gamma and makes image tiny bit washed out. It can also flicker with big fps change.
-Vrr kinda sucks below 40. It can work as LFC but it's not ideal.
-On pc, wth 40-60hz 4k monitors, I could use RTSS to lock to 58fps global. This way vrr would always be active and not fall back on very slow vsync.

30,40 and 60 locks are way more useful for consoles games
I would much more like the ability for ps5 to ALWAYS output 120hz, even with 60fps games. Just like Ratchet does with 40fps/120hz mode.

Right now, if VRR was enabled, it would do almost nothing. You would "at least" need games with unlocked fps
Been gaming with Series X on my LG C1 for a little while now and don't notice any issues. Guess I'd need to test out different games while in 120hz mode though. The only game I've tried in 120 mode is Dirt 5. Maybe it's not a good game to test out 120hz since I can't tell any meaningful difference between 120 and 60. Haven't noticed any VRR issues.

The only game I've tried in 120 mode is Dirt 5. Maybe it's not a good game to test out 120hz since I can't tell any meaningful difference between 120 and 60. Haven't noticed any VRR issues.
you will not notice it easily on console but gamma change is 100% there.
It's super easy to test on PC.

I can test with resident evil village or remake2. These games have fps lock option to 30,60 and 120 that locks in real time without restarting the game just as you flick the options.
And with vrr, each of those settings look DIFFERENT.
120fps looks darkest - correct and 60 have lower gamma. 30 even so. It is clearly visible. And if you go 35 to 90 fps for example and back, it will look like flicker because it will get darker and brighter again.

The voltage sent to pixels is tuned at 120hz. Anything else results in "not true" image/gamma.

Of course it's not a HUGE issue. I still play games with vrr on pc and don't notice much or at all when playing. But it is 100% there. That's why I would love 30,40,60,120 fps lock options on ps5 and ability to always run at 120hz

Gonna have to try BFI while playing Dirt 5 just to see what that looks like. Even without any motion assistance, my C1 runs laps around my previously owned QN90A away in clarity thanks to OLED response time. No way I could go back.

They add a slider to correct that in the LG Tv settings, have you tried it?

You are heavy.... There's older tvs with VRR (I have a 2020 one), come on the feature even existed on XBOX One S and XBOX One X.
:pie_eyeroll: The percentage of PS5 owners with TVs from 2020 or 2021 is low, and the percentage of VRR capable ones is even lower. So it makes sense that it's not a huge priority for Sony.

Sony is a TV manufacturer, it should push new TV technologies before Microsoft. And sorry to tell but I am one of the owner that is waiting for it. The new consoles are adding HDMI 2.1 technologies that comes with new TV features.

Yeah. 48" c1. It's normal and a staple of OLED and most fald displays as backlight works in similar ways.
They add a slider to correct that in the LG Tv settings, have you tried it?
It is useless as You can set gamma offset with it... but it's not dynamic according to HZ.

Don't get me wrong - it's not an issue almost at all. I don't care and love the C1. But I would prefer the 120hz option to be there too just for that reason (and lag)

LOL.

I have a 900e and the audio arc bombed out from an OS update and they never fixed it. And I got a bunch of dead pixels already. Thankfully I have a 5 year Costco warranty so when it gets near the end I'm going to send it for repairs.

Never had dead pixels ever in any Panasonic CRT or plasma.

Next TV I'm getting is Samsung or LG. I'd go Panny again but Panasonic barely sells tvs here in Canada. I think they pulled out. Can only find their tvs at specialty AV shops now.

stop talking out of your ass. i have both an LG and SONY OLED and the picture quality is better on the SONY OLED. yeah its not by much but its there. the LG though has much more features for gaming like hdmi 2.1 ports.

You know what you’re right, I forgot they never announced it. But you get my drift.

One thing is for sure, people would be better off being patient. The feature is coming, just not on your time.
