Tencent to the power of X: Xbox partnership promises “new gaming experience”

Timi Studios, a subsidiary of Chinese tech titan Tencent, and Microsoft-owned Xbox Game Studios have announced a “strategic partnership” that will see them jointly create new games. The details of the venture are sparse, but the combined forces of these two gaming giants could involve a mobile spin on several Xbox franchises.

In a press release, the companies announced that “through this strategic cooperation, Timi Studios will enter into a multi-layered and in-depth partnership with Xbox Game Studios to jointly create excellent game content and bring a brand new game sensory experience to players.” Further details on the partnership are set to be announced by the end of this year.

China’s Timi Studios generated a revenue of $10bn last year, making it the world’s largest developer according to Reuters. It is known for its work on mobile games including Call of Duty: Mobile, the highly-anticipated Pokémon Unite and a collection of multiplayer online battle arena titles such as Honor of Kings and Arena of Valor.

Meanwhile, Xbox Game Studios owns an arsenal of popular games, including Halo, Minecraft, Forza and Gears of War, to name only a few.

A partnership between the two companies could help Timi build a name globally by converting its mobile titles into console plays for Microsoft’s Xbox. Speculations over mobile versions for Xbox’s most popular games have also been circulating. So far, Microsoft has not dipped a whole lot into the mobile gaming market. However, a partnership with Tencent’s top mobile studio hints towards a potential step in this direction.

Mobile gaming experienced a boom over the past year and a half as people were locked inside their homes due to the pandemic. In January, Verdict reported that PUBG Mobile – the immensely popular battle royale title from Tencent – generated $2.6bn revenues in 2020, making it the highest-grossing mobile game of the year.

Online and mobile gaming are major emerging themes in the gaming industry. With the increased maturity of streaming, cloud services and mobile technology, more and more gamers are turning to their cell phones for new gaming experiences.

I hope all these companies realise these "partnerships" are basically a guise for them to steal all their tech.
Companies like Tencent and NetEase run their own engines for their mobile games and basically just slap whatever IP they can on them and hope one sticks.

Hahaha and what "tech" do you suppose Microsoft is going to give Timi Studio?
These partnerships are literally just Microsoft lending a name/IP to Timi studio to make whatever.
MS is basically getting free money from Tencent since they wont really have to work on the games and can just have consultants make sure the games meet MS standards.

You think the IW engine runs Call of Duty Mobile?

Timi will continue using Unity to make whatever IP Microsoft decides to lend them whatever the split is on profits well its a good deal.
And if Timi makes games that get popular in China the parent IPs may also become popular.
Its a gamble but a pretty safe bet.

The reaction here would be...different if Sony is the one working with Tencent on mobile gaming.
I know what you’re saying, but let’s be real for a second here, the biggest outcries would be from the PlayStation fanboys...

I mean whenever Sony decides to rather pay a little bit of attention towards mobile instead of green-lighting a sequel to the super duper mega hits such as Gravity Rush, you hear the fanboys screeching the following:

‘OMG JiM RyaN iS RuiNing PLAYSTATION!!!

Sony, FiRE JiM RyaN ASAP!!!’

Like clockwork, the warriors have assembled. If Sony made the partnership, it'd be the "best move ever".

Just like Sony acquiring the pc port studio after the denying and crying that ps exclusives won't go to pc lol.

Either way idgaf about mobile gaming or tencent. Fuck em both 🤣

Tencent will not stop until everyone is part of the Borg.

Game's for China only which means the only way to launch there would be to partner with one of the many CCP controlled companies based there.

Still MS is basically in partnership with a CCP controlled company which is not a good thing.

These replies seem to be void of 'fuck china'. Strange.

"It's good MS bought them it's better than tencent getting them"

"Hurrah tencent partnership"

I guess tencent are cool again.
I love how ppl here hated Tencent untill Xbox is involved. :messenger_grinning_smiling:
You make it sound like this thread has 100s of posts with people praising these new mobile games.
No one in this thread is going to play any of these mobile games anyway, and most of the Xbox fans clearly dont give a damn cuz they arent in this thread.

P.S Actually played a bunch of COD Mobile

It's more the lack of the usual things that come with a tencent thread.
People are making it seem like a good move with games on gamepass and mobile games when usually a tencent thread would be filled with 'fuck tencent, fuck china, fuck EGS, fuck mobile' and all that jazz. Not here though. Great move for both companies seems to be the general sentiment.

Were 30 posts in.
You are reading too much into something that isnt there.

Before the bump there was less than 10 posts in this thread.
There isnt enough data to even say what the general sentiment is.

Right?
good, at least not Microsoft.
^From Tencent buying Sumo Digital.
Hahaha why enter MS threads if you are so anti MS?

How many posts in is this one?

Some 100 posts.
Im guessing because people actually like Sumo Digital?

Clearly people dont give a damn about mobile games or which IPs MS sells.

I mean how many posts before they said fuck tencent and talk became about fuck china and the empire taking over. It wasn't even 3. But anyway whatever. This thread doesn't even make any mention of mobile gaming in its title. I'm sure there are a lot of visitors who could come here and voice their opinion on tencent, on china and on mobile games in general.

I think people might have read the OP and realized this is about mobile games and realized they dont give a shit.

Don't agree, sorry. Otherwise they wouldn't enter threads titled like this either

But they do and you will see some of the same people liking and posting there who are here and some who entered that thread to shitpost even when it's about mobile but not said a peep in this tencent one which they are more likely to enter not knowing it's about mobile.

Anyway it's not important just an observation.

Did they put Genshin Impact on Xbox today or something?
Still waiting for Mihoyo to reach out to me here in the West. Why can't the east ever reach around this way?
