I think this is an extraordinary achievement but it shows how other companies have shifted focus to the west.

Remember how Famitsu scored FFXIII-2 a perfect 40/40? Never forget.

Japan and the rest of the gaming world are on different wavelengths. Saying that aloud seems like I'm stating the obvious (albeit not with respect to Switch, the software attach rate and sales performance is otherwordly anywhere you go).

I feel like Japan has the opposite reaction to mobile/handheld vs console gaming announcements than the rest of the world.

I imagine they see something like a trailer for the latest Final Fantasy game and then at the end they're like, "WTF!? It's for Console and PC only!? Where's the iOS and handheld version!?!? Pass."

Sony isn't doing something right in Japan. I refuse to believe that it's simply a matter of availability.

They pretty much abandoned japan for chasing the western dollar, now it's just a token effort for the remaining japanese players this is why sony stuff is selling poorly in japan. Most of the devs jumped to the console that currently has the largest player base at the moment which is the switch and started to play catchup which is why there's a current explosion of 3rd party switch stuff in japan. Even games with small budgets sell a ton because of there been so many switch owners.

Look at the weekly charts when a random ps4 or ps5 game pops up it doesn't sell huge numbers, there are still huge sony fans in japan but sony doesn't seem to want to support them.

I loved FF 13-2 i took what worked for 13 and expanded on it while throwing away the trash. I platinumed it.

While this is great for Nintendo, I hope it doesn't stay this way for gaming's sake. Monopoly is never a good thing.
Speaking of Japan only, it is not a real monopoly for Nintendo. There's too much competition for Nintendo to monopolize again. Sony will always be around the corner if Nintendo gets too cocky again. I think this is great for Nintendo. It proves with a decent enough platform and decent support from third parties even from underpowered handheld hybrid Nintendo can be on top even for just a little while. Congratulations Nintendo you deserve this.

Sony knows Japan is a lost cause.

So they pivot away from there and focus on emerging markets and china.

And now playstation is having their best years ever sales wise.

Guys guys monopolies aren’t a good thing!!…

Unless it’s Sony DOMINATING. #ReturnoftheKing #4thePlayers.
Monopolies aren't inherently bad. And even if they were, this isn't an example of one.
Since the Japanese crowd doesn't see value in what Sony is offering, they flock to Nintendo.

This is less Nintendo crushing the competition through unsavory methods and more Sony and Microsoft not giving a fuck about the Japanes market.

Nintendo is dominating because the competition isn't delivering. Nvidia is in the same position as AMD graphics cards are a joke. Intel used to be that as well until team red came out with Ryzen.

Sony moved their HQ to woke California and also began mandating censorship for even their Japanese titles. Aside from a few large pub/devs that still support them, they've pretty much lost indie and mid-tier devs in Japan entirely.

I mean, didn't Sony even close their own "Japan Studio" as well? It sure sounds from all their own actions that they just don't really care about Japan.

The future is bright for third parties in Japan, in a little over 8 months just the Top 30 Third Party games on the Switch have sold close to 6 million physical. 16. Samurai Warriors 5 (Koei Tecmo) - 61.350
  17. Fishing Spirits (Bandai Namco) - 60.360

  19. Minecraft Dungeons (Microsoft) - 38.147
  20. Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 (Sega) - 36.105
  21. Family Trainer (Bandai Namco) - 35.273
  22. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Sega) - 34.615
  23. Densha de Go!! (Square Enix) - 29.624
  24. Apex Legends: Champion Edition (Electronic Arts) - 29.057
  25. eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020 (Konami) - 27.539

  29. The Quintessential Quintuplets Double Integral (Mages.) - 20.374
  30. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles (Square Enix) – 18.197
TOTAL: 5.822.108

Next few years will be brutal awakening for the competition because I feel it's underestimating what will happen when 90% of Japanese titles are prioritizing Nintendo ecosystem instead of a Sony one; there is plenty of things Sony can do to remedy this but they don't seem interested. Most of their decisions are in the exact opposite direction, changing button layout, not publishing smaller titles, letting go of long-term employees who had relationships with third party devs in Japan, making Japanese third party devs jump through hoops to even launch their game on the PS, lacking any 1st party titles targeting the second largest video game market, making the PS5 huge so it doesn't fit into the Japanese home. Everything they are doing is just confounded by the relentless competition they are facing.
It was alright with the PS4, they were facing a 3DS that never caught on in the West and a Wii U that was a total disaster - but even through funneling all PSV titles to the PS4 it didn't lead to growth compared to the PS3 which was viewed as floundering console in Japan(and elsewhere).

Without third party support PS5 is heading for a niche console, and a huge gamble for any Japanese third party that is gearing up exclusive games hoping to strike it big in the West.

Its been a long time coming for anyone who has been following Japanese sales for the past decade; with Switch gearing up with a stronger line-up in 2022 with Breath of the Wild Sequel, Splatoon 3 and an Open World Pokemon next year it's going to be common place to see a Top 30 entirely made up of Switch games. Couple that with the increase frequency of publishers abandoning PS5 as an option in Japan and the situation is dire as the PS4 is phased out.
