Valve says it hasn't found a game Steam Deck can't handle

I think the screen will be a much larger barrier than the hardware itself.

A lot of PC games are released under the assumption that most players will be using a mid-to-large monitor, and even on "13-"15 laptops they can be a pain to play. The Deck is half as much, with a "7 screen. You can adapt most games to be enjoyable on smaller screens, but most pc games are not by default, and they won't be patched specifically for the Deck. For example, the majority of Strategy games have small text boxes and numbers integrated in the interface, with no options to resize them, and they will require either you to have exceptional eyesight or be an absolute eye-straining misery to play.
A lot of modern games recognize that some people have poor eyesight and offer UI scaling options. Especially the games with lots of text to read. In others, the text is a fixed pixel size and gets proportionally larger as the resolution decreases.
As someone who frequently tries to make games run at 540p, I'm fairly certain the Deck's screen size will serve just fine.

Who decides the specs? I decide the specs, and if you have to ask what those specs are you probably don't have them.

Playing on a "glorious pc version of a game" kinda hits different when you playing on an actual rig compared to a laptop.
Ooooo, you don't say...and now you're dissing gaming laptops too, oh wow...

It sounds like you haven't played any AAA cinematic games at all. God of War 2018 has great gameplay if you're into action games, with a decent story and great voice acting. The Last of Us 1 and 2 have very brutal gameplay that allows you to mix stealth with guns blazing when you're spotted ala Dishonored, along with a good story (TLoU1) and excellent voice acting. There is far more gameplay than cutscenes in these games. 80/20 split atleast.
I played GoW it was ok. I didn't like the last of us at all. I played UC 4. It was ok. I enjoyed the story. It felt to me like same cover shoot out over and over until I made it to the next cutscene. My two favorite AAA were Spider man. (Except where I had to be Mary Jane, Peter or Miles.) Ghost of Tsushima. I enjoyed both of those games. Control was another game I didn't like. I don't care for ubisoft games. Full of bloat.

I just don't enjoy a lot of AAA games. Glad you do.

My favorite like I said would be the souls games. Spider man. GoT. I also loved Botw and odyssey.

That's a load of shit. Just because a game has a decent story (for a game anyways) doesn't mean they sacrificed decent gameplay. I finished God of War just a few months ago, and the gameplay in that is great. So many play styles and harder challenges to complete. You can even check high level builds in God of War and see what I mean. I'm currently playing Spiderman and that game has a ton of gameplay that makes use of the gameplay and pushes you game controls to the limit with fast action traversal and dealing with multiple enemies. I think it's a joke in this forum where people think cutscenes = no gameplah and don't realise you can have both.
I loved spider man. I thought GoW was ok. I don't care if you think it's a load of shit or not. I like the games I like.

That's like your opinion man.

uhm of course it can. basically every game on the market today is literally also made to run on Xbox One... you know, a 1.3TF machine from 2013

once this stops it will be a different story.
we already see games that have dynamic resolutions scaling down to 720p on Series S as soon as you wanna go with 60fps or heavy RayTracing.
and the Series S is vastly more powerful than the Steam Deck in every conceivable way. up to 2x on the CPU side and up to 4x on the GPU side (up to because the Steam Deck has no set clock speeds but scales depending on power draw)

best case scenario here is that the Steam Deck plays Series S versions either at 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 the resolution (depending on game and power draw) or it will need to be significantly scaled down in graphics settings to work at a decent framerate.

you have to keep in mind that the Steam Deck is way further behind the PS5 and Series X as the Switch is behind the PS4

1.0TFLOP/s to 1.6 TFLOP/s
VS
12.15TF

4c/8t Zen 2 @ 2.4ghz to 3.5ghz
VS
8c/16t Zen 2 @ 3.6ghz

that is a gigantic difference! That is a difference of up to 12x on the GPU side.
the Xbox One's GPU meanwhile was only about 3x to 4x as powerful as the GPU of the Switch.
which is in line with the difference between the GPU performance of the Series S compared to the Steam Deck. so expect the difference in quality from Series S to Steam Deck to be basically in line with the difference in quality between Switch and Xbox One

yes, now every PC game runs without issue, because we just ended a console generation where these games needed to actually still run on so developers kept these systems in mind when developing games.

I really wonder how The Medium runs on the Deck, since that is actually not really designed with last gen in mind

4K resolution, targeted by most current and upcoming PS5 games, is 9 times the pixels of the Deck's targeted 720p. So you're looking at only 25% more load per pixel, for the same GPU power. Now add being able to downscale the graphics and effects that consoles usually don't allow. Now add customizable FSR (will have to do since DLSS is unavailable).

I think it's going to be possible to bridge that gap. Especially if the PS5 targets 4K@60, and the Deck settles for 720p@30.

Just like the Switch there is a certain type and style of game that this is perfect for.

Like a lot of indie or smaller titles that aren’t as hardware demanding.

It will be the best handheld retro emulation device. It will excel at slower turned based mobile friendly games. It will be able to handle more mainstream action titles but may not be the best experience.

you are basically paying for an open platform switch which is cool.

and I think the thing people are most excited about is the Zen chip but People have been saying those are awesome for a while now.

PS5 Games don't target 4k60, even now with graphics complexity similar to last gen we already see dynamic resolutions going down to 1440p, in extreme cases like Metro Exodus the PS5 can barely stay above 1000p

like I said, I wonder how The Medium runs on the Deck, a game that runs at 30fps and can go below 1080p on a Series X and to about 640p on a Series S... again, at 30fps

Whether it will run them great or not. Portable gaming is gonna get better and better.

Switch and now Steam Deck are gonna push the portable industry forward. The Switch 2 and next Steam Deck are gonna be awesome

Why, though? When playing a game, gameplay is what matters, is it not? 30fps is quite enough for gameplay. And the only ways resolution matters is in relation to screen size (which is good here), and if there's a lot of small text to read (which in most games there isn't).

I guess it's a little of that "See this movie on the BIG SCREEN!" thing, where there's supposed to be a right way that certain things were meant to be enjoyed. And I get that, but I also get the convenience of choices.

Sometimes I'm in the mood for immersing myself in a game and having cinematic $$$high-production-value entertainment enrapture me... other times, I just want to go on a raid and collect some loot, or I want to grind my character a bit before playing through to the ending, or I hate this story and I just want to play the game, or finally get around to finishing that game I bought that I keep forgetting has been in my Steam library forever... Or, I want to play outside, and although my surround sound home theater cost me many months' salary, this new horror game I got scares me even more when it's just me outside on the porch at night with my headphones on.

There are lots of good ways to enjoy games. I'd rather look at it that way than to say some viable option is a bad way.

Switch owners are gonna feel like at home, but there is a reason why people buy more powerfull home consoles and gamimg pc.

...Except, those people don't buy those more powerful machines in a portable size. Because those portable machines don't very much exist. Except for Deck. (And AyaNeo and some other devices or laptops, but those are even further out there.)

well there is, they would need a constant supply of new AMD APUs that work for the form factor and are a big enough jump to justify an update

Valve could release a intel+nvidia combination tommorow and announce it if they want too. valve isn't holded back by the usual console x amount of time or x amount of improvement factor. He can keep releasing deck upgrades every year with the hottest tech on the market.

Nvidia has shitty mobile parts, as does Intel.
their only current choice is AMD, also they need an APU, so they would need to either go only Nvidia or only Intel... both of which would be worse than this hardware.

this can change in the future, but for now there is no APU in sight that will release in a year that would be a big leap

I definitely spend most of my time on other titles. I didn't like Control either and can't think of any big Ubisoft games that I've enjoyed, unless you count the Trials or Rayman series.

Valve choice is the entire market. They have no time limit or time table with any of there products. they can release every year a new VR headset if they want. PC has no generations. If tommorow AMD announces a new APU that's 2x the performance or even 50% faster then what's in the steam deck, valve can release it a year later without problems.

Also intel does attempt moving into this solution tho.

well they sure can do that. but it would be more important to try to work with developers to make sure their first gen Steam Deck will get actually supported.
they should try to convince developers to directly target their system with their lowest settings in order to make it actually future proof. because it won't be at all if developers don't do that.

like I said, I wonder how even a current game like The Medium run on it, because that is already on the edge of acceptable on Series S! and it will only get worse.

they can update, but if they do without making sure their original version is well supported they will essentially leave their day 1 customers in the dust

U use console logic. I use PC logic.

This is the difference:

PC logic :
Steam deck will have all the support day one because its a PC. Nobody has to beg cdpr to optimize there game for the deck because u can either do it yourself or it already works for you or somebody posted the settings for optimal gameplay 10 seconds after release.

Console logic :
We need lots of support from devs and they need to optimize for it, because otherwise we won't see games.

PC logic:
U buy a piece of hardware right now, and if tomorrow a new one comes out so be it. U either wait for that or u are happy with what u got and buy into it and upgrade later on if you need more. ( options ), or skip the generation and move to the next after that if its to quick.

I got a 9900k, there are now 3-4 gens of intel cpu's above it? do i care no. I paid 500 for the cpu, year later new cpu launches. i don't care. i will upgrade when my 9900k isn't performing anymore probably around 2024-5

Console logic:
It needs to be supported by every new title in the next 7 years or else its not worth it. If a new device comes out in a year people will feel bad about buying it, because they demand 7 year support.

Will there be games that don't run on the steam deck?

yes.

Will those games come sooner or later or are they already here?

who knows. I play anno 1800, let me load in my map see if it can hold more then 2 fps. as my 9900k hits 15 fps at times. It's all what u want and what u do.

Hell witcher 3, that runs on some people's 1080ti's at 150+ fps. at mine it drops sometimes under the 60 at 1080p why? mods.

The thing is u have full control over stuff, pc gamers will make profiles will make mods / updates to make the games run optimal for the deck anyway in seconds.

Want to see how far player optimization can go? here you go. lego flight simulator.

From 2 fps to 48 fps.

The biggest issue PC has is support for architectures. if your architecture of your GPU is to old it can result in you not being able to lpay something because its only made for newer architectures. With the architectures used on the deck that's a non issue.

For example i got a 1080ti, yet that 1080ti is beyond faster then a 2060. still a 2060 has a newer arechitecture and can play metro enhanced edition. My 1080ti can't. Do i care? no ( never tried it however so yea there is that, but i assume its a no go ).

The statement in the title is interesting. Some older games on Steam do not work on my PC. I'll wait and see if the Steam deck can run those.

The reason for some of the older titles not running on newer Windows is because Windows deprecated support for some of the things those games use. Linux is usually not so limited. Usually.

I was thinking about Uncharted 4 and why there hasnt been any news for release, though we know, its coming to PC. Then I thought it would be funny if U4 drops day or week when the Deck releases. I dont know if it is true or not, but it would be absolute comedy gold if they do.

go into the install folder of the game, right click on "FalloutLauncher" > properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode > Windows Vista Service Pack 2
then check the box for "Run this program as an administrator"

do the same for "Fallout3.exe"

can also be the case of old GFWL drm fucking the game up.
If aforementioned solution doesn't work, try this fix:

Comedy gold? The game is five years old. Are you lost in time or something? Children are born, learn how to walk, speak, draw, and start learning math in that time.

So much has happened in the world in five years that it feels like a lifetime ago.

Naughty Dog released a sequel to Last of Us.

It’s sad that you would even look at things that way, considering the context. Sony going PC and the game being 5 years old, and yet you fantasize about it, not because you want to play it on a deck but because you would take pleasure out of the idea, that somehow it would hurt somebody’s feelings. That’s some sad shit. At least dream a little bigger…

480p 30 fps ?

Try the medium, its probably the hardest game to run at this point. dual view screen = 4x lower fps haha
