I've seen them in best buys without a heatsink. If your up to it installing one isn't that expensive or difficult.
Although I agree that having one already built in is nice.

Maybe after the beta but there's currently a list of drives that work from the beta testers. Some manufacturers have even confirmed that some of their drives are compatible.

I hope once it's all said and done that Sony themselves provide a list of fully compatible drives, its really the least they could do.

I hope so as well and it would be nice if manufacturers start putting labels on compatible drives.
But even if that doesn't happen you have to be pretty lazy to not find a source for compatible drives. There's already several good ones out there.

I bought it directly from Western Digital. Looks like there was quite a run on them, as I see it is now 3-4 weeks on the 1TB and 2TB (only the 500GB is in stock).

Same, my 1TB SN850 w/heatsink arrived today, good timing. Even managed to get a 15% off code!
Was piss easy to install as well don't know what all the fuss was about.

I trust myself, bit it's just easier to work off a certified list. Plus the general public is clueless......they will stick all kinds of things in there.

Well I'm sure there will be plenty of reputable sources that they can use. Like Digital Foundry for example. I know some might put out a bad list just to troll but I doubt that will be common.

Do you find it hilarious and sad when people compare tyres for cars?
Changing summer/winter tyres is simple, and adding ssd to console is simpler. For both you just need to have enough intelligence to look specs or ask from professional.
I find it bit sad that some people lack basic reason and skills that they cant even follow simple instructions.
Adding ssd to PS5 isnt really that complex, almost the same as changing new dirt bag to vacuum cleaner.

Sony needs to be the one to provide a list, which I’m sure they will do. You need the manufacturer to supply one in these lists because you want to ensure you are ticking the boxes for what the manufacturer recommends and you have some level of support IF you had issues.

I mean you can add a heatsink on your own. In guessing they are buying them because you don't need to do anything to make it meet Sony's recommendations. I really don't like how inflated some of the prices are.
I found a deal on the Gigabyte Aorus 7000 2TB with heatsink at 380€ and I bought it.
I'm not in the beta but I thought that with more than 10 million PS5 out there mostly bought by core gamers, there might be a short term spike in demand that is gonna lead to higher prices and less availability. I've already tested the hard drive on a PC, now I guess I'm going to wait until the firmware is released for everyone (I guess sometime in September).

They expected the market to accommodate their dumb hopes and wishes, when fact is that proprietary solutions are meant to offer value to the console manufacturer, not the buyer.

I have the WD one and a heat sink. Got home with them, put in my code, and nothing. Turns out I have the PS4 beta code that came out recently, and not the PS5. Hopefully Sony lets me in the beta soon, but not sure if they are doing another round.Really love how once again the suckers got shown up quick.

With how big it is compared to the slim heatsink I'm not surprised. It's around 20$ in case anyones wondering.
For those wondering how much not having a heatsink increases the temperature it's around 20°c. The difference between the slim and the fat heatsink is around 1-2°c.

Yep. Just bought a 980 Pro yesterday. Not for my PS5 but for my PC, but it's already $40 cheaper than the $240 XSX SSD. Not to mention the fact that it is 7.0 GBps or almost 3x faster than the XSX SSD.Really love how once again the suckers got shown up quick.

And these prices WILL fall down. I had bought a 980 just last week when I still had a PCIE 3.0 mobo for a $100. The 970 Evo Plus with the same read write speeds (3.5 GBps) had launched at around $200-250 just a couple of years ago. I have no doubt that the Gen 4 SSDs will drop in price within the next year or two while MS continues to charge $240 for their 1 TB SSD since there is zero competition. Just like they did for the 360.
Sony's communication is so shit they fail to take advantage of the GOOD things they do. But I think MS should be the one getting criticized given how they are charging way more for a much worse speed. Not to mention the inability to improve the loading performance by inserting faster SSDs.
As the resident disillusioned Sony fan here on gaf, I have to give Sony credit for this approach. And so should everyone else. Defending a pricier more restrictive upgrade path is simply inexcusable. Hopefully with some criticism, MS would drop the price, but they wont if we have people continue to praise their SSD upgrade.

I get that they are in the business of making profit, but $150 should be more than enough profit for Microsoft from these SSDs if the manufacturers are selling them for $100 for a profit already. I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but the PS Vita micro sds are selling for $150-200 now for just 64 GB. You could buy regular non-proprietary micro sds for just $10.

I'm guessing Seagate has an exclusive manufacturing deal with them. Which is why we are not seeing any drives from the competition like Western Digital or Samsung. In a way Microsoft helped set the price by allowing them to have a monopoly in the market.

I'm pretty sure Microsoft licensed the production of the drive to Seagate. They probably are allowing them to maintain a monopoly for a limited time. That would explain the lack of competition.

Thing is, that smaller form factor is generally more expensive.
Whether they'll let bulkier drives stick out the back farther is another question I guess... they should be a lot cheaper then, as you can get a ~1TB drive at that spec for like $130. Then add MS's licensing fee or whatever and it wouldn't be too bad.
