The Amiga 500 mini announced

I broke the stick on my TheC64 joystick after like a month… You know I’m a fan of TheC64. But the joystick is of incredibly low quality compared to something like Tac-2 or Wico Command Control. Or used to be at least, I don’t know if they changed the design after the founders batch I got.

Supposedly, the microswitch version (packaged with TheC64 full-size, and also sold separately) is superior to the original in both durability and responsiveness.

And I really don’t see any problem with usability or understand what you don’t like about it, it’s a joystick and the most logical control method ever, actually took me forever to get used to a Dpad

Personally, I wouldn't have a problem with a proper joystick. The reason why I feel that a joypad would be better for modern usability is because it would allow you to have more easily accessible buttons.

Many old games only supported a single button function on the joystick. Even most 2-button joysticks at the time had both buttons perform the same function. Porting games from arcades or consoles meant that the user would also have to use the keyboard. You might have to slap the space bar for a second function, maybe Enter for a third function, and so on. A joypad with several easily accessible buttons could allow you to remap the controls so that all game functions are at your fingertips, with no need to reach for the keyboard. It's a modern convenience that many newer emulators offer.

The ones with the mini were shit but the ones with the maxi are better made.
Better but not perfect, the distancer inside started to wiggle for me after a while and eventually cracked the plastic.

I guess it could’ve been a one-off manufacturing error though. And I got a new one which is still alive and well 👌But I wouldn’t recommend a long Decathlon session! (Might break your hand too lol)

Someone should make a small wireless joystick with sturdy arcade parts, built in all metal.

They can have more buttons on the joystick, but sooner or later you’ll want to sit by the keyboard anyway so I don’t think it would be necessary.

Always wondered if these ever made it to the states? In the 80's & 90's europe was as much 8 & 16bit computer territory as much as it was console territory. Pretty much everyone i knew had some form of 8 or 16bit computer, we never had enough money growing up to afford an amiga but i played plenty via my friends. Nowadays i play via emulation but having a mini will be a fun way to enjoy the library. Just hoping it's not a dud.

Do you mean the original Amiga computers? If so, then yes, they were available in the US. Amiga appeared to be much more popular in Europe, but they had a loyal following here, too.

Chris Huelsbeck's greatest work wasn't Turrican II, but Jim Power.

Fight me.

Which ones gonna release first?

Amico or Amiga?

Needs a poll ;)
Vampire V4 (standalone classic Amiga clone with AC68080 CPU) has been released.

Probably so that you can be ready to play CD32 games. There were a few Amiga 500 games that supported a controller too, mainly those who were CD32 ports, or got ported to consoles, like Leander, WolfChild and LionHeart.

I wonder how easy it is to emulate a hard drive in order to avoid virtual disk swapping. I never managed it on WinUAE.
I use "WHD Load" game versions on both WinUAE and physical Amiga 1200 with TF1260 (classic Pentium class XC68060 CPU rev 1 @ 63 Mhz, 128 MB system ram). My Amiga 1200/TF1260 also runs MacOS 8.0 68K via Shapeshifter (hypervisor-like sandbox).

rnlval, do you by any chance post on amigaworld? Your posting styles have a familiar technical tone!

Great system. Always wished they had a cartridge version, would have nice to experience these games back in the day with 0 load times. Also less memory constraints. 1 meg systems were much more common in the USA/Canada.

Also Wings is an amazing game. But the game list and self additions, is amazing.

How do you load a WHD on Win UAE? Do you use the zip file as if it was an adf file?

If they also release an Amiga Maxi as they did with the C64 I may be tempted to buy one and install one of my MiSTer consoles for all the computer cores.

Nice. I'm looking forward to testing out that joypad, in particular.

Is there a chance that this is coming to North America?

I hope so. TheC64Mini and TheC64 saw an official North American release, with some slight changes to the included games. I don't believe that TheVIC20 was ever officially released in North America.

All the 8-bit and 16-bit computers made by Commodore, Atari and Apple, along with PC compatibles were popular in the United States. Gaming tastes were slightly different in the US, with RPGs, simulations, war games, sports games and graphic and text adventures being popular in the US. Microprose, FTL, Electronic Arts, Lucasfilm Games, Activision, Epyx, SSI, Origin, Interplay, Dynamix, Accolade, Cinema ware, SIR-Tech and Westwood were some popular developers and publishers back then.
