The Future of PSPlus.

Many companies are now focused on making their multiplayer games Free to Play. Fortnite, eFootball, COD Warzone, Apex Legends etc are all free to play and do not require a PSPlus subscription and subs have become very sensitive to which games are being offered on the service.

In my opinion, Sony cannot go back on not requiring PSPlus for free to play games, so they need to go in a new direction.

They currently have around 46-47 million subscribers and about 3 million PSNow subs.

My approach would be to add as much value as possible.

First I would add Funimation / Crunchyroll as part of the base tier. For everyone on the sub.

Then I would take PSnow and break it down and build it up again into a more interesting service.....

  • PSBC - PS1, PS2 and PS3 games all accessible at the new higher tier PSPlus and downloadable. (Higher tier exclusive)
  • PS-Longplay - A choice between several GAAS games to keep you up to date and cover all play costs (FFXIV, Monster Hunter World, Destiny, Apex, Genshin etc) (F2P games give you in game currency and exclusive items) (Higher tier exclusive)
  • A rotating roster of PS4 games, as it offers now. (Higher tier exclusive)
  • A small selection of premium games for PS5 and one Day 1 release per month (Higher tier exclusive)
  • Reduce free monthly games from 3 to 2...... one new PS5 or cross gen game and one great indie or classic older title per month. (This would be in the normal gold tier sub as well as the higher tier)

Normal PSPlus would remain at 10 euro / dollars...... the new tier would begin at 12 euro / dollars and gradually move towards 15 over the following 2 years.

The new tier would change your gold PSPlus symbol to a Black PSPlus symbol.

Let me know what you think, give suggestions and feedback.

Many thanks for reading.

Xbox does add more value and the nickel and diming by Sony will take away a lot of their momentum once people catch on. By then it will be too late to change course.

This part....just tells me you know nothing about business and you like bleeding money.

Good try tho! some interesting ideas for sure but the cost would have to be higher.

Don't they earn something like 25% of the PlayStation income from free to play games? The more games go free to play, the more they earn and less need for that PlayStation plus cash. Maybe we'll see a day when online free again..maybe.

Hopefully it's not adding more movies & tv shows (we have a Video Pass 1 year trial in our country) since I don't care about that at all. Same with merging with PS Now - zero interest.

They should think about gradually expanding the PS Plus Collection on top of the monthly offerings. Plus we should start getting 2 PS5 games eventually.

Free games have mtx. Its easy for people to spend alot of money on it. 12 month of fornite season pass is 120$. That is 30% cut for sony. $36 per yearly battle pass. 20m buys these on playstation platform, and that is $360m from yearly battle pass on fortnite. Now add Apex, warzone, and other games which needs battle pass. Do *0.30 for publisher cut, multiply by the user numbers, * 12 month= $$$ loads of money from mtx.

No ps+ requirements is very smart on PlayStation side. Thnx to that, they got FF14 early launch, Which they made tons of mtx money from.

That is why Playstation had $22b in 2020.

Since they seems to want go all the way on releasing playstation games on PC, i can only see PS plus membership decreasing.

Sony is doing it all wrong, they should have kept all their exclusives like they always did, and put backward for PS123 PSP/Vita, and for PS subscribers they would get a bonus like 1 BC game per month or something, i mean there are a lot of cool things they cool have done but they just choose the most lazy short run mindset they could've done, aka releasing PS games on PC while totally putting a finger to their backwards legacy of past consoles except PS4. Sony has done a mistake by putting a PC fanboy as SWW leader aka Hermen Hulst, i'm quite concerned about the future of the brand tbh.

Square is never giving up their FFXIV monthly fee.

I'm not so sure about this. This would only appeal to a very limited portion of the gaming market. I myself wouldn't be interested.

Even if this was a "free" addition to PS Plus, with no added cost to existing subscribers, the truth is that behind the scenes it is an added cost to Sony. I'd rather they keep PS Plus focused on gaming, and use this money to improve other gaming-related areas of the service.

PSBC - PS1, PS2 and PS3 games all accessible at the new higher tier PSPlus and downloadable. (Higher tier exclusive)

If the games are going to be downloadable, then they should be making this stuff available for purchase straight from the PS Store first and foremost. If they want to offer some of these games through PS Plus or PS Now after that, then go right ahead.

Reduce free monthly games from 3 to 2...... one new PS5 or cross gen game and one great indie or classic older title per month. (This would be in the normal gold tier sub as well as the higher tier)

No way. On the contrary, they should go in the other direction, and increase the number of monthly games to 4 or more.

It wasn't all that long ago that we used to regularly get at least 6 games on PS Plus every month, for the same price that we're paying now. One of those games could be a PS1, PS2, or PS3 game, much like you suggested above.

Funimation and Crunchyroll aren’t available globally, I’m pretty sure Funimation is only available in like six or seven countries, so you can scrap that idea. If Sony is teaming up with Netflix for game streaming, then they may include a Netflix subscription through plus and whatever games they have available to stream on their new service. That’s all just rumours for now though.

Console are dying, because companies are taking the loss on making those consoles. No one wants to do that for long. Especially, when Games are also expensive. You need bigger platforms, to recoup some of your losses. God of war had a 200m budget. It was lucky, the ps4 had good numbers. Imagine the ps4 with Xbox numbers. How many copies do you think God of war would have sold?

There is also this long period of time, for games to comeout. Last of us was on ps3. Last of us 2 was released at the last year of ps4. With 1 studio doing multiple project, its tough to manage that much development cycle.

Pc is their smart choice, for earning enough money to make a sequel for the game. Its why xbox can do day1 games on gamepass. Both steam and Xbox sales would cover the cost of the game. Sony want some of that money too.

If you guys don't want Sony to put their games on steam, then Playstation need to hit 30m sales. This way, Sony won't need pc at all. Until then, Sony would work to put their games on pc.

Future of consoles depends on how less does the company lose on hardwares.

Playstation have yet to recover from ps3 losses.
Sony has lost more than $3 billion on the PS3, so far.Jun 25, 2008

PlayStation Plus - $5/month or $60/year
- same as it is now

PlayStation Plus Platinum - $10/month or $120/year
- includes PlayStation Now
- rebrand the PlayStation Now library as the "PlayStation Platinum Collection"

Use the color of the platinum trophy for the premium tier, instead of yellow.

Compare PlayStation Plus to Game Pass. The base tier.
Compare PlayStation Plus Platinum to Game Pass Ultimate. The premium tier.

Wouldn't that kill ps+ premium? The main reason people get ps+ is for the mandatory MP rule. At 120$ price, it would be too much for these people. Especially, when psnow suffers from current 1st party games. At this point, it would be way much worst than ps+ is, and destroy the entire ps+.

They would need external help to get away from the 120 a year.

Pair some tier of ubisoft. Like gamepass eaplay.

Make the price at 15$ a month, and add 1st party games to the service permanently after 3 years. This would make people get in to the service.

Otherwise, they have 0 fat chance against gamepass. They would have to put their 1st party games day1 on the service, to be able to compete with gamepass. That is what main appeal of gamepass. Not paying for xbox 1st party games, and playing them day1, while you access 3rd party games.
