Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - Review Thread

Con-Z-epT

Live from NeoGAF, it's Friday Night!
Finished. Yeah it was good. Much better than 2016.
Took me:
13 hours an I only completed 71%.
Whoever said 5 hours before release is an idiot
I still wasn't able to play through the game since release. Life has me occupied with so many things going on.

Glad you like it. Does the end excel?

I don't have comparison. I've only played 2016 ratched and hated it ...
This is MUCH better. Ending is good too.

Some obscure website just gave R&C a 2/10 review score. Not going to link to it directly, but it is on metacritic.

After playing this game a bunch I think the 7/10 scores it got is pretty darn fair. But it’s kinda ‘rough’ to play this after a game like Returnal with such tight gameplay.

It looks great but the writing is quite often quite cringe and gameplay same as all other Ratchet games. But it’s a solid 7/10 Ratchet and Clank game.. so pretty good.

LOL.

Well, give him credit for not being like everyone else on the 6-10 scale.

If I was a game reviewer, I'd do the full 1-10 scale where 5 was a so-so game just like the old ass 80s (and some 90s) magazines. If I thought a game sucks, I'd give it a 2/10 too, whereas modern day game sites would still some reason give it a 63/100.

Things got super skewed the second the internet came around.

For you gamers who never read old game mags, there were ones in 80s that gave games Ds and Fs, EGM would give 3s and 4s. And PC Gamer (games based out of 100%) would give ultra shitty and buggy games 12 or 18%. I dont think I ever saw one single digit %.

There can be like 20 reviews that are 8+, and one review that’s a 6/10, and the fanboys will skip the positive reviews and fucking pore through the 6/10 review line-by-line. They’ll pick it apart desperately looking for any possible reason they can discredit the review and declare it to be invalid.

And now I’m reminded of those “Truth Media” reviews they’d have on Something Awful. They’d be loaded with inaccuracies just to trigger the fanboys. Some grade A trolling there.

This is why the games media can't and shouldn't be taken seriously.

So true.

Funny how when it comes to movie reviews, some key things:

1. Critics continue to rate the movie on their full scale (1 to 4 or 5 stars) and bad movies still get grilled like always. 1 star, half a star, some movies might get a zero

2. If a movie gets universally loved or panned, you dont see movie nerds defending or countering the score. People accept

3. If a movie gets universally loved or panned with a couple movie reviewers going against the grain, people dont care either. Its okay some critics do a 180 vs the herd

But all 50-100 video game review scores on MC have to perfectly trend alike or else gamers go ape shit.

Figure that one out.

The thing here is that Ratchet & Clank isn’t super buggy. I can’t take someone serious to even rate it 5/10, even that would be strangely harsh. 2/10 is like a metacritic user review bombing.

It does mean "something". Just don't allow it to mean "everything" to you and you'll be fine.
It doesn't mean anything to me, i played the shit out of many 60/100 and 70/100 games and was bored to death by several >90/100.

My problems with metacritic:

  • A few dozen people want to tell millions what's a good game and what's a bad game
  • The useless 5, 10 and 20 systems are converted to the 100 system and so you got bullshit like 50 or so 100/100 for some games that raise the average

Exclusive games got in my opinion almost always too high ratings because:

  • You got critics that got names like DualShockers, PSX Extreme, PlayStation Lifestyle, LEPS4, PlayStation Country, Playstation Official Magazine UK, Nintendojo, Nintendo Enthusiast, Xbox Achiebements and many more that tend to rate above the average
  • Many critics are in the 30s/40s and chances are very high that they have a special place in their heart for Playstation or Nintendo

My advise: Look for a reviewer that mostly hits your taste, trust him and forget that stupid number.

Your advise honestly doesn't work for me. I also check out the Metacritic score to get a "feel" of what the consensus is. Then I check out what GAF is saying. And I finally listen to a few podcasts that give me their experience with the game. And from there I'll figure out if I like the game enough to buy it.

And in some cases, the game still doesn't do it for me. And I hate when that happens. The last game to do that was Ghost of Tshumia. For some reason it didn't work for me. Going by what most people say.......it takes about 5+ hours to really get going and I could never get pass the 3-4 hour mark.

I know what you mean. People and critics keep saying how great those movielike 3rd person action adventures or Souls games are, but i droped most of these after a few hours.

I believe those critics are right though. It's just me that hasn't found the "magic" in Ghost of Tsuhima. I can tell that a good game is in there. I just didn't have the patience to see it through and I hate when that happens. But there's so many great games to play that it's easier for me to put one game down and just move on to the next one. It's the gift and the curse of gaming today.

If gaming was like this in 1997, I wouldn't have played and beat FFVII. Back then there wasn't a good game coming out one every few weeks. So you sorta forced yourself to play more of a game than you would have (compared to today).

This seemed like the best place to ask.
The kids were playing with this yesterday and they've somehow managed to change the game language. I've tried to find the option using a translate app but as far as I can tell I've been into every menu and been able to find the option to change it back to English.
I've searched online and a couple of people have said that you can only change the language by changing the PS5 system language which doesn't really make any sense but of course I've checked and on the console is exactly as it should be and other games still play in English.
Would somebody please be kind enough to check for me exactly what I need to do to get it back to English? It's the downloaded UK version although should really make any difference apart from maybe the languages that are selectable.
Thanks.

I recently completed Ratchet ps5 and I am frankly stunned at the scores the game got. Imo the reviewers were clearly blinded by that next gen shine. Seriously considering this typical standard Ratchet game for goty?

Anyway

First there are a some great positives

- great graphics (truly next gen)
- no loading
- good and responsive controls (nothing new in ratchet titlrs though)

But when looking at the actual game the cracks really show up

- really simple gameplay loop and the story missions are basically on rails with NO room for thinking outside the box (again like uncharted)
- The arena fights that you are constantly forced through are just too basic and really repetative. This is not doom - it feels like a ps2 title
- The AMOUNT of pointless cutscenes! It feels like uncharted constantly interupting with cutscenes (in freaking ratchet?!)
- That leads into my main complaint: the focus on story and the constant chatter - and the dialogie is BAD. And i mean REAL bad. Also during main missions it never stops. This is not funny banter like for example star fox, no they talk about their shitty feelings and what friendship is etc. And that shitty bug hacking character basically screams shrill stuff all the time. Seriously who can stand this? Both grown ups and children in my household were annoyed with this and wanted to turn the voices off

Frankly i thought the game was fine, i think the series have gone in the wrong direction with that extreme story and character focus

7/10 is what i would expect of this. NOTHING in here is new except the tech

I'm such an idiot sometimes!!
I loaded the game up on one of our "overseas" accounts which had the default English menus and at the bottom of the settings screen if you enter them while on the list of save files has this option at the very bottom of the list.

I've looked not the menus are English again and I can't see any other way to get into that particular option, which is strange. I can actually remember seeing that when first getting the game and thinking it was strange but forgot about it.
