Report me for console warring
I think they should wait until Nvidia comes up with a good chip, and release Switch 2/ Super Nintendo Switch when its ready.

Nintendo is moving to mobile for this reason.the Switch can't happen twice, a lot of what made it sell originally and got people on board is gone, this includes western third party support and a shrinking japanese third party support. The Switch was Nintendo hitting the Wii bottle twice but they know it's not replicable so are trying to milk it for all it's worth with OLED and limiting price drops on software while moving gradually to mobile.

And the sucessor will start with what the Switch lost overtime.

They will do what they always do. Come up with a new system that has some new ways to play ( what some like to call gimmicks) while retaining much of the traditional controls. And release new versions of their franchises that make use of the increase in power and the new ways to play. Come up with some new IP. Remaster/remake/rerelease some old games. ... I expect the form factor to remain the same.

AS for new ways to play:

1. The Switch form factor is setup to be a VR trojan horse. Labo VR showed a glimpse of the future once the Switch gets a higher res screen. Could that happen next gen? All depends on pricepoints of hi-res ~7" screens.

2. Also feel like Nintendo could do something with AR as well. They did some AR with the 3ds. Pokemon Go has some AR. Mario Kart:Home Circuit was all about AR.

3. what other cheap tech is out there to be unexpectedly utilized by Nintendo...inquiring minds want to know. What unheard of ways could they use cheap tech? What other tech could they use. Nintendo doesn't get enough credit for its use of cutting edge tech. They were first with wireless controllers. They did 3d in the 3ds. They had AR in the 3ds. Wii U did WiFI direct video transmission that had less lag than tv sets of of the day. Switch had a USB-C HDMI dock 4 1/2 years ago. They did touchscreens in 2004. Dual-screen too. ...

They have to do something new and interesting and to get a lot of people on board. Yes some just want a Switch 2 with more power and will be easy sells. But for a lot of people, a Switch 2 will look a lot like a Switch and they will need more convincing. New ways to play even if they ultimately are "gimmicks" not only get people to buy in but also freshen up franchises and add some fun factor and at the very least the sizzle to the steak. Remember the switch capability of the Switch won't be novel this time around.
I’m trying to think of tech that used to be really cool and cutting edge, but is now cheap and commodified.

- drones (Nintendrones?)
- teledildonics
- fitness tracking
- “Animoji” style face mapping
- VR/AR

you could make one hell of an entertainment system out of that stuff

Nintendo will Nintendo, and rightly so. They are a market unto themselves. Not for me, but I certainly respect the difference they bring to the table.

They will be just fine. Release switch 2 in a year or two, sit back and watch Xbox and Sony fans fight over ray-traced eyeballs as they deposit money in the bank.

I think the hybrid approach is a winning one for Nintendo and will continue to be, but Nintendo will probably try something gimmicky or stupid rather than refining what works because that's how they do.

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Where do they go from here?
Simple.

A more powerful handheld with acceptable price.
People buying their consoles not only just the games, but the convenience of portability as well.

Another innovation really.

A simple " Switch 2"... The same idea with batter graphics won't cut it. It never does for them. They need a brand new idea with their next console successor I think.

I'd say either they break the trend and do something conservative (Switch 2) that everyone wants to they make something really weird and stupid only the hardcore fans want.

Probably a gaming cap console, so you can throw it like Mario Odyssey to interact with your environment. It could be used for games similar to Pokemon Go where you throw the hat onto a pokemon to capture it.

Ah, but what if it's something weird and stupid that everyone wants?

I don’t understand people saying whatever Nintendo does will succeed because they often don’t. It wasn’t a given that the Switch would be what it is and it isn’t a given that a Switch 2 will be the same.
The publics reaction to Nintendo is as unpredictable as Nintendo itself.

They can put out a system that is cheaper to produce with less features and charge more for it.

They've given up on putting forth any actual effort, so why start now?

The should make a Switch 2 and call it teh Sony Vita Station and it'll be teh bestest console in the universe EVER!

They have basically never released a successful direct successor to a previous popular console/handheld, so I'm not so sure.

Switch 2 will probably just be a new Wii U or 3DS. They need to revamp their marketing if they are ever going to make one.
That's actually an interesting trend. Every successor that Nintendo has released that has basically just been an upgraded form of the original concept/HW has not been as successful. When you look at their more traditional home consoles, the Gamecube sold less than the N64, which sold less than the SNES, which sold less than the NES. It took the unconventional Wii for them to have another big hit in the home market, again. Whose direct successor ended up being a big failure.

Even when you look at their handheld market, it's the same thing. The GBA sold quite a bit less than the Gameboy. They switched things up with the DS and found success. But, when they followed a similar model with the 3DS, they ended up with just under half the DS's sales. It took a different route of the Switch for them to find big success, again.

I know many on here say for them to just make a Switch 2, which is what I think they will probably do. However, if history continues to play out, it will not be as nearly as successful as the OG Switch, as the novelty of the hybrid will have worn off. And while I don't think it's a huge threat, they will also have the Steam Deck to compete with in that space. Which really is what lead me to think, where do they even go from here? I doubt a portable VR console would really be a hit or even be something they would want to focus an entire system around, again. Maybe a suit or straps are included with the system that would have haptic feedback in it. Of course, that would have niche appeal and probably be expensive.

Nintendo did a revision so basic it got their fans to wet themselves for an OLED screen with the same specs and a higher price point. They'll be fine.

Go with two separate systems again - A handheld, and a Virtual Boy 2 (with the ability to connect to your TV as well this time)

Switch 2

Switch 2 (System + Dock £280)
Continue with 720p screen (1080p Docked)
Power will be similar to Steam Deck (Xbox One/PS4)
Stylus
AR Cameras (Front and Back)
Full backwards compatibility with Switch 1 games

eGPU 4K Dock Add-on (£100)
The new gimmick will be a standalone e-GPU that can be purchased separately that attaches to the Dock for 4K resolution.

Switch 2 4K Home Console (£280)
Later down the line they will just release a console version that just uses the 4K graphics card for cheaper if you don't want go buy the portable and eGPU.

They will do something dumb again like call it SwitchU and every casual will think its an add on

I think Nintendo's biggest problem is also their biggest strength. They appeal to kids. So if their console becomes hot with 7 year old kids then they are on a winner. But kids also grow up fast and the kids who were into Switch or Wii or DS are becoming teens and move on to other consoles and PC by the time the next generation roles around

People also come back around for nostalgia when they hit their adult years. But I think Nintendo will always struggle a bit more with that teen demographic which means that they are likely to fail after a successful console as kids grow out of their market

I'll hope against hope they'll stick to the hybrid model; it seems to resonate with the masses but then again, the masses are fickle and will move on to the next big thing, whatever that may be.

But just incase, for all you dedicated gaming hobbyists, people who enjoy getting into the inner workings of tech, visuals, performance, etc,; they don't make things for you anymore and they haven't since the Gamecube. They make novel hardware to support their software and whatever crazy ideas they might get. The fact that broad swathes of you can't seem to understand how the Switch is big seller prove you either don't or won't get it.

You're never going to get cutting edge tech, you're never going to get the latest and greatest big budget AAA games on their hardware. You're going to get weird shit that will not jive with about 70% of you, you're going to complain it's not for you, you're going to complain that "Nintendo is hold their IP hostage," or whatever perceived slight you feel they sent your way. The masses are where it's at and the masses are are who they're going to focus on. Go buy a Steamdeck.

Actually for me personally Nintendo did go cutting edge with Switch. For its time when it released Switch was the best handheld jump in power when it released. Playing Breath of the Wild and Mario Oddyssey was a big deal in handheld. I've always liked Nintendos quirkiness even before they went far with tech with Switch. The DS, 3DS, Wii had great games even if the tech wasn't advanced in addition the pricing of their hardware was decent too to make up for the outdated tech though you can argue Wii motion, dual screens on DS and the 3D screen on 3DS are some advanced things to make up for lack of power. But lately I feel Nintnedos game output has suffered, they are not releasing that many games in quality and quantity. The pricing of there hardware doesn't match the now outdated tech. Switch is over 4 years old and has yet to yet to get a price drop other than a gimped Lite. The new OLED is more expensive when I expected it to atleast release for the same price and drop down the vanillas price. But they are selling like hot cakes so maybe I'm just not in the market for Nintendo anymore and that's why I have moved on. I still have a old Vanilla Switch lieing around which I barely touch and will turn it on when Nintendo releases there big games like a Zelda that isn't a port but those moments are few and far between.

I actually worry about whats next for Nintendo, at times they feel very out of touch. Creatively bankrupt possibly too. Their plan will only work for so long. They always mess up hardware after a success. The Switch may be an outlier. Logic would dictate more of the same and possibly an expansion deck for the home, external GPU style. That would ensure some future success. But there is a large portion that use if in handheld exclusively, so they need to make the best handheld experience possible. Hopefully they can sell 2 products with the external GPU for those who wish a more beefy home console.

I don't know if creatively bankrupt is the right term for it. They definitely play it safe when it comes to their SW. Same IPs pretty much every gen. And their output has definitely slowed down as the graphics have been pushed more. When it comes to HW, though, they definitely think outside of the box. The only problem is their HW doesn't always appeal to the mass market. And that seems to especially be the case when it's an updated version of the previous gen's model. They seem to do better when the HW idea is quite a bit different from the previous gen.

SNES was the only by the books successor and the reason it didn't do as well was because of the Genesis. Assuming the Steamdeck isn't the Genesis that won't be a problem.

GBA wasn't out long enough to match Gameboy, plus PSP loomed at the end of its lifespan.

3DS had kid unfriendly 3D.

Wii U - do we even need to go there? I don't even think it counts as a true Wii successor in the sense of "the same but better".

What I want
A next gen Nintendo system that is as powerful as PS5
A next gen Switch that's as powerful as a Steam Deck with lots of games that are cross compatible between the next Switch and there next console
Next gen Pokémon with full 3D camera, huge leap in graphics

What makes sense financially for Nintendo
A Switch 2, that's not a huge leap in power so they can continue to make games that have less of a budget to get a decent profit margin on. The Switch 2 will charged at a premium price with huge profit margin due to the success of never dropping price for original Switch which shows Nintendo consumers are willing to pay more but instead of using that extra money for a more advanced system they sell for high price to make a higher profit
With Pokémon continue outsourcing remakes with lower budgets as they sell alot do not worth putting more budget into the games when consumers are willing to pay

I want Switch 2 to have a better oled screen than the upcoming oled switch and to have the same Tegra1x chipset but at 2nm (no fan).

New joycons with optical analogue sticks and a small, optional but perfect dpad underneath the >v<^ buttons (compatible with old switch).

Umm, I think that now they have renewed their user base with people across all generations. Perhaps it is time for them to test the home console market again? Something like the Xbox Series but with a portable (weaker) system and a more powerful home version.

oh wait you must be trolling

Switch 2 is gonna be fine. It will still be the only handheld on the console market (Steam Deck is a different target audience imo) and the Nintendo IP will carry it easily. 3rd party will also be there for the most part. Ezpz.

what do you mean? They finally figured it out. No more coming up with something new. They know what to make now. Swtich 2.
its easy as pie.

People here love to keep crying about Nintendo, how they are making mistakes and idiotic choices - yet many of those very choices have made them one of the dominant entities within the industry, especially with their current system.

Nintendo will continue to be Nintendo. They will try something new, put it in the next version of the Switch and even if it doesn't succeed, they will continue to make bank as they do the one thing that is important: make good games. Y'know, the only thing that is important for a gaming focused company.

Yeah but they were not failures
Saying they were not successful was definitely a stretch, but he is right that none of their follow up consoles that kept the same basic premise/model of its predecessor have been met with the same success. They were on a steady decline until they came out with the unconventional Wii. But it's direct successor failed. The 3DS, while it can still be considered a success, failed to sell even half the units the DS did.

Tell you one thing, no matter what Nintendo do next they should not take any advice from some of the experts on here. ;)

Many were definitely wrong, myself included. But you can't say there wasn't logic in the belief. The 3DS failed to sell at $249, which forced Nintendo to drop the price $80 after just 5 months. The $299 Wii U was an abysmal failure. Kinda not hard to think a $299 Switch would have trouble reaching mass appeal.

Of course, there was little logic when quite a few Nintendo fans on various sites were saying it was the end of consoles if the follow up to the successful Wii had failed.
