New map with the movement system they have in place is so good and the hammer is always satisfying.
Really like that its not mega oP now with its AOE, you have to get close to a direct hit.

Excited for this one, they have done a really good job, need some tweaks here and there.

I know this is just a tech test to gather bot data, but something feels off on PC. I'm not dipping below 60fps, but gameplay feels less than smooth, to put it as best as I can. And it's barely maintaining that "60fps" at 1440p. It's difficult to enjoy at this stage, and it hampers my desire to put in more test games.
It’s way better on Series X, I’m a bit disappointed in the pc version too. But it’s still very early and they are obviously still optimizing it for all platforms.

I haven't played Halo in years, but even with bots this played and felt like the Halo I remember though it might be a tad faster. I got tied of Halo back in the day as it felt almost archaic in comparison to other shooters already out or coming out. Now I don't think that is such a bad thing as so many other shooters these days play so much alike. With this being Free-to-Play I think it might be huge or at the very least there will be no shortage of games to be found.

Have you been playing any games in 90fov recently? That can make anything seem slow.

Honestly I never thought 343i could do it.

I've played about 2 hours worth and the gameplay is really good. 343i best work imo. Looking forward to the game now

I'm wondering why you were so pessimistic? Halo 5's multiplayer was incredible, and this seems like a more refined version. In fact if you didn't tell me it was HI I probably would have confused this with H5.

All I ever wanted from H5 was to remove spartan charge and that's literally what they've done in this game. Perfection.

So far, I'm really liking it! After sinking a ton of time into Halo 5 MP, it took some time getting used to not using those thrusters again but after a few rounds it clicked. Few points from my impressions:-

  • Sprint and clamber work well, don't feel game breaking at all (though I always liked their use in H5). Weapons feel good, especially the assault rifle! Is it just me or has the TTK been increased over H5?
  • No 'real' ADS (you still zoom in with the weapon, just not down sights) which was surprising. 343 were adamant about this change when they first showed off H5.
  • Bot AI is decent, though you can spot their patterns pretty fast and where they're going to be going (eg: start of the round, they always bunch on the first ramp on the left). Heard they were going to bump the difficulty of them up today so will try that out.
  • Some interesting glitches in the beta. Rag doll physics going into overdrive and flinging a bot across the map, some funny intro sequences where a character drops dead etc. Kind of hope they keep those in for the full game.
  • Battle pass store feels a little clunky and hard to read (might just be my TV).
  • Customising your spartan feels a little clunky as well. Will take some getting used to. Have sunk a shitload of hours into Destiny 2, so have become used to its customisation settings I guess.
  • No ground pound! Huzzah.

So far, it's shaping up nicely! Still early days with just one map and one mode, but I'm liking what I'm seeing so far. Let's see if 343 can stick the landing (particularly on campaign).

Oh, no thrusters? What else has changed from H5? I know spartan charge and ground pound are gone. Now you say thrusters. Anything else? I assume the stabiliser is gone too if you can't ADS?

everything but sprint and clamber is gone, WHICH IS GOOD and sprint is basically only there so that sliding works. Sprint in Infinite is quite literally just your "i'm about to slide" button. it's 2% faster than normal movement and you can instantly shoot out of it with no delay.

which is all great news, that means Sprint is basically gone, but there's still the placebo for the CoD kiddies that think it makes games faster (which it doesn't)

but the bad news is clamber is still in, instead of better alternatives... and they took out grenade jumps it seems (which, if final, would be fucking awful)

I don't mind everything else going (I'm rejoicing about spartan charge being given the boot) but I will miss thruster. I think it was well designed in H5. It was a short burst, it wasn't a massive crazy rocket to the side like in Advanced Warfare. I think they took what they saw in AW and refined it. I didn't think that needed to go, but it's not a deal breaker for me that it has.

as a big proponent for Classic Halo (like Halo 3) gameplay, I am honestly of the opinion that Thrusters were the only spartan ability that can actually work in a true Halo game... but they kept Sprint and Clamber instead, which makes me sad (but again, sprint is basically gone, it's only a button to press before crouch in order to slide)

What you described about sprint only being used as a prelude to a slide sounds pretty clever to me. Similar to the recharging shield when not sprinting (I assume that mechanic still exists?). Some pretty smart compromises for the people for and against sprinting.

Shields recharge while sprinting and you fire immediately while sprinting. It's really just a slide gateway and a marginal increase

Ok. That still surprises me though. That mechanic was introduced to appease people who hated sprinting which I thought was very clever. I never expected it to go.

But as you said, if sprinting is barely faster then I guess it makes no difference.

nope. shields now recharge while sprinting, which makes sense when you remember that Sprint is now only 2% faster than normal speed

my enemy #1 in Infinite is now Clamber, which is just a bad mechanic that could EASILY be replaced by more dynamic mechanics.
Splitgate, which is basically Halo with portals, has a jetpack that gives you short bursts... that basically works like clamber as in it gets you up higher ledges, but different to clamber you can perform it during combat and while facing any direction, making it way more dynamic.

for Halo I think a jetpack would be too much, but a small thrust jump (basically a double jump) that would allow you to get EXACTLY the same hight you can get with clambering up ledges now, would be a way better solution than clamber.

edit: here sprint in action in comparison to normal walking:

Yes I agree I'd give up clamber for a small thrust jump.

they could actually elegantly combine side thrusts and thrust jump into a single button... basically, if you press jump in the air while letting go of the left stick you thrust upwards, and if you push to any side you do a thrust towards that direction.

would eliminate the need for slide as well (which is basically Infinites thrusting), therefore the need for sprint... and it would eliminate the need to clamber

It's definitely more than 2% but still nothing like COD sprinting. That dude they're trailing is moving around and the player is taking cut corners to keep up. If I had to guess it's more like 10% faster if that.

Yeah but 2% and 10% is kinda splitting hairs when you consider it's like 50-100% in most other games.

going by the awful quality twitter video, and counting frames I get a difference of 7.6% faster for sprint

Now that they have access to everything id software has in the vault, if they cared about movement, that's the only place you need to look. Quake has had the best movement of any FPS game out there for decades. If you look at quake champions they've included every possible moving mechanic you can think of, and it plays very well overall.

What I've seen here from the videos this looks like child play in comparison.

In fact I'll just say it, this game needs to be ported to an id tech engine and just let them do their thing.

Pulse Carbine and Needler need their target tracking swapped. Needler is useless against a moving target even at medium distance and Pulse Carbine lands hits without even trying to aim remotely close. Sprint is slow enough I don't see the point of it.

What are you on about?

why would they take Quakes movement ststem, people forget Quake is dead because of the way it plays, this generation is not interested in that tire of game anymore

On PC I usually set my FOV to 90. I had no idea it slowed things down.

Yeah it massively changes your perception of speed. When the final game comes out I assume it will have an FOV slider. No one should be forced to play 60fov on consoles these days. It's torture.

Just got loaded into a new map - Recharge. Same indoor map that's seen in the multiplayer trailer. Anyone else get this yet? Also have noticed that the AI difficulty has gotten more challenging (ODST).

Like the map so far, bit more verticality. Need to see more of it though.

We'll see about that. I think the project was mismanaged and Quake has a lot to offer as a franchise, but that's besides the point. Take Doom then, if that makes more sense to you.. the movement will still be much better than what they've included in this demo so far.

It doesn't matter for the campaign as much, but if you are trying to go for a fast paced multiplayer game, id software should be employed and something tells me that eventually, they will be.

Let's focus on multiplayer here. Apples and apples. Doom hasn't had a popular multiplayer mode in a long while. It's debatable whether modern doom mechanics would be popular enough to drive a long term PvP game.

the game has an FOV slider that goes up to 120°, default is 70° which is pure torture

You are right, perhaps I am looking at this from a different perspective, I don't really know what the Halo fans expect in terms of multiplayer, movement mechanics, weapons, etc. so maybe it will be ok. It just looks sluggish to me.

Keep in mind many people are probably playing on the default FOV. Games really need to start defaulting to the max FOV if they want to present them in the best light. Even a fast paced game like COD seems sluggish to me now when I watch them played at 60fov.

depends on who you ask.

if you ask me I would use bascially Quake 2 mechanics but slightly toned down... because quake 2 movement is a bit too fast for Halo... maybe 90% of Quake 2's speed and rocket jumps not quite as crazy high, but Halo Reach in MLG settings is basically toned down Quake. movement faster than base Halo Reach but slower than Quake 2, and you can grenade jump pretty well... Halo 3 also had the Brute shot which can do some sick rocketjump like movements

Concussion Rifle in Reach:

but then there are the new players that came in with Halo 4 and 5, and they want basically Call of Duty Advanced Warfare like mechanics... which I hate deeply

On console? And yes 70 is torture.

at least on Series X|S. I haven't watched videos of Xbox One gameplay yet... and the way they phrased it during the dev talk was weird, something along the lines of "FOV slider is not PC exclusive though right? it's also on other platforms" ... "yeah"

so that sounds to me like Xbox one is out of luck... but who knows

That's a shame. High FOV is computationally very cheap these days.

Ah, yes.. cod mechanics are very different, but I think it makes sense in that setting and what they are going for in their games over there. Warzone has decent movement for what it needs to be.

Now, can you tell me why you think Quake 2/3 movement would be too fast for Halo? I'm just curious. Is it because it needs to be viable on a controller?

Look at how this plays.. I can certainly see how this would be out of reach for a controller player, but Quake 2/3 should be ok with a heavy does of aim assist.

I think it doesn't fit the game/universe and the way campaign levels are designed in Halo. so rocket jumping and stuff is totally ok in halo, but not to the degree it is in Quake.

I edited my comment above with some video clips of how rocket jump like movement used to work in classic Halo (it seems Infinite drastically reduced that btw... which sucks)

"10% faster but you appear on radar. Seems like a fair trade off"

wait, so you are not on the radar is you walk normally? that's actually interesting not gonna lie... but that makes sprint kinda even more useless tbh lol

edit: I just watched some gameplay of the flight and focused on the radar, and it's actually true, you are not on the radar if you walk.
this will make all the pro players happy I bet...

I think it does make you appear when walking, except the time between scans is a lot longer. I'm not 100% sure though.

well every time I saw the guy walk (I watched the gameplay The Act Man uploaded) his arrow disappeared from the radar, which usually signified that you are not on the radar in other Halo games. and in one instance a bot was walking backwards without shooting and he wasn't on the radar either... I might watch some more and see if I notice anything

edit: nope, clearly not on the radar if you don't sprint, watch this encounter where the bot doesn't shoot and doesn't sprint for a moment
