Fuck me in the ass , 1tb for 400 dollars , that's like price of ps5 digital (if u can find one )
I'm pretty sure this 1 tb will have available storage in 800 gbs
U can literally buy a ps5 digital and double ur ps5 storage that way
PS5 is priced $600 and $750 in Australia.

It's frustrating because this is a feature that should have been working Day 1. There is NO reason VRR shouldn't be working.

I have no issue with this because they specifically stated that it wont be ready at launch. Different story for me if they didnt explicitly state that

Anyway, the expandable drive is in the latest beta update so it should be a couple more weeks before an official launch.

But you're forgetting the narrative:

"We're going to be stuck paying high prices because the Series X drive is proprietary, at least we'll be able to buy SSD's for PS5 on the cheap"

The irony. Sure the solution is what's expensive, but we argued whether that solution made sense for gamers. Like justifying the price of a Bugatti Chiron vs a Laborghini Veneno, sure the Bugatti is faster and more expensive, but at the end of the day, they're both super cars.

Yeah but i remember when a 128gb SSD was $100 or more and now with $100 what you can buy? A proprietary drive never go down on price... unless the brand cut the price. Did the 360 HDD go down on price? Did MS lower the price?

Compatible 1TB PS5 SSDs are already below $200 with few models on the market.

What are you talking about, based on what Sony says you can use any drive that fits the space. Buy cheaper one if you want - most games will just load a bit slower, maybe have a bit more pop-in and that's it.

Unless you're scared of screwdrivers this is way more consumer friendly.

I'll wait for competition to bring the price down and the specs up. Let the market do its thing.

Side note: I was sent a beta sign up link in June, so they should have a fair few people already signed up. Just don't have a SSD that I can test with this haha.

Cool, which ones?
Does it really matter because the fact remains that a lot if not all of the cheaper drives will result in slower load times and additional pop-in when used on your PS5.
Plus, Sony are saying that drives will effect the fan speeds and I wouldnt want my PS5 taking off like some PS4's did.

If your gonna buy one then you're better off paying more and getting a decent expansion imho.....but they are wildly expensive.

How did they not have this ready to go at launch?
Likely because when the software was frozen for launch, there was no drives out that were fast enough for them to test it properly. With millions of consoles out there, testing takes a long time.

It´s the same shit again we had month ago, where a Canadian l_sbian sandals lover tried to mock people, using a RAID0 setup achieving 30GB+ per second, but with terrible access times.

On paper, which one is quicker?

SSD A has 5.5GBs per second and 0.050ms seek times
SSD B has 5.5GBs per second and 0.100ms seek times

I wouldn´t buy it as of yet.

Clam down, price will go down once there is some completion in making these, unlike on xbox, and there should be lots of options by the end of the year, by this time next year, ps5 ssd will be cheaper then xbox proprietary ssd.

7gb speed SSD the latest, fastest and
more expensive available.

How much does a 2.4gb SSD cost? $120 half of what the propietary Xbox SSD.

It's crazy! it may be a few years before it even makes sense to upgrade at a reasonable price, and yes proprietary sucks, but having an option day 1 is also a benefit.

I bought a 5TB external HDD and put all my BC games and everything else that doesn't have the XS Optimized symbol on it, then I have all 1TB for Series X optimized games. Also if I run out of space on the SSD, I transfer games from the SSD to the 5TB drive when I'm not playing it, then I can transfer back in minutes when it's time to play again. A bit of a hassle, but I can deal with that instead of paying $219 for a drive which I find ridiculous. Can you do this on PS5? because that works for me.

Now imagine if somehow MS decided to drop the prices of their proprietary drives. If that happens, we all win. Competition is awesome for us consumers!

Yay something else to compete with scalpers over :/
I guess I can try to get one in the 15 mins they are available?

You have 1TB internal (with more useable space than on the PS5), the 1TB SSD expansion, and then you can have two additional externals with a maximum of 16TB total. How is size a limiting factor?

I meant 2230 size on that proprietary external SSD. It will never be as good and cheap as 2280 or 22110 you can fit into PS5.

Unlike the xbox ? Lols I'm pretty sure they were already 180 170 a month or so back

I wonder what happens if you load games on a SSD then move it onto a PC. Can we access the files I wonder? Build an emulator and play on PC?

Fucking fail Sony. The list of technical requirements is so complex. Absolute joke. They even say thay even if your drive meets all the requirements it still might not work lol

Given that they didn't need to give us the option at all, not too bad. They could have just released their own proprietary drive and left it at that.

I don't think that all the special requirements or hiccups are necessarily Sony's fault. Keep in mind they are trying to set in stone a hardware spec to last them a console generation. They may have squeezed in features to make the launch finish line that wouldn't be completed or ironed out till later. They will confirm working drives as they come out and get tested. Want to try meanwhile? Beta at your own risk.

Would be much better if they did their own drive … consoles need to be about convenience..

Now everyone is checking and comparing compatibility..

That’s more for PC users

Is that confirmed to give you the same performance as the internal?

Nothing is confirmed to give you the same performance, not even those Seagates.

Doesn't mean you will notice any difference.

Yeah, but there will also be drives that will stamp the PlayStation logo on it and say it's specifically made for PS5 and have the same performance as the internal drive.

I just hope, the full on asset streaming dream is not dead. Cerny was clear on needing 7gig to compete with internal.

On the other hand we do know that compression has advanced since inception….possibly bridging the delta.

Are their SSD failure rates any different from the others? Maybe you are thinking about hdds?
Yes I'm talking about the hard drives as I have no experienced with Seagate SSDs. There's an online storage service called BackBlaze and they release an annual report on failed drives at their data centre. Immediately came to mind when I thought about this thread and I recommend people check it out.

BackBlaze Hard Drive Failure Rates

I wont need an expansion for 2 more years at least at this rate. So I won't be getting an M.2 for a good while. And fuck Seagate.
That's the thing. The M.2 slot in the PS5 can accommodate SSD's longer (hence faster) than the current consumer drives. May be worth the wait.

Like justifying the price of a Bugatti Veyron vs a Laborghini Aventador, sure the Bugatti is faster, but does the 2M price tag make sense against 400k when at the end of the day, they're both supercars?
But one supercar can be taken and driven on many tracks that support standard cars all over the world, whereas the other can only be used on 2.

Wtf is this? So now I have to attach cooling to my drive and hope it still does not overheat. And if I do buy the right drive and everything is good I still might not get performance the same as the internal drive? This seems overly complicated and poorly thought out.

The average gamer with roaches living in their PS4 is not going to be able to figure this out.
