It is also 210 in Germany, Italia, Spain. Currently 179£ in UK as well.

Now look at equivalent prices of drives that are the same speed as the Xbox Series and look at the prices if they let you select an off the shelf non proprietary solution.

You are paying double the money for no reason other than "it just works". Having seen how valiantly it's been defended if I ran the Xbox division I'd make a mockery of you guys too and come up with a proprietary solution that I can get away with making a ~50% margin on.

FYI, PS5 users can sign up for beta testing and try out using M.2 SSDs right now.

Yeah, this practice goes back all the way to 360 days…..it just contained a 2.5” drive, but they blocked the shit out of it not wanting people to install their own into the enclosure. Best deal in gaming etc…

They are mugs, end of story.

Half the speed for double the money but yet these clowns are in every thread possible saying "but my proprietary drive...". What are these guys, lapsed Vita fans?

It's like they don't realise the fact that they could be enjoying sub $100 per TB prices if they had the freedom to slot a standard format drive in their system.

Since you were talking in EUR, I assumed you were referring to Europe. It wasn't the case ?
Not everyone in the EU/Europe have EUR. We have CZK and we are right next to Germany. It's good to convert it to certain well known currency. So even with 210EUR price tag, it's still not as great deal, since this drive is obviously much faster and thus the slower one should be even cheaper. But yeah, this one does not have that fancy casing.

You're forgetting that they all have multiple Series X|S consoles that they travel between every day and need hot-swap storage. So when MS talk about how many consoles sold, you can divide the number by at least 2 to see how many owners there are 😆

Xbox Seagate SSD card - 1 TB @ 2.4 GB/s with 3 year warranty ... costs $220.

Samsung 980 Pro M.2 SSD - 1 TB @ 7 GB/s with 5 year warranty ... costs $200.

Proprietary storage costs more for less. Bad value. No other options either, or limited at best.
Literally opposite in UK mate. Couldn’t give a monkeys about USD.

Which M.2 SSDs can be used with a PS5 console?

It’s important that you only use a supported M.2 SSD to expand your PS5 console storage. Make sure you’re using an M.2 SSD that meets the following requirements. As this is a beta, please note the final specifications may change ahead of the official system software release.
M.2 SSD requirements for PS5 consoles

Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD

Capacity: 250GB – 4TB

Cooling structure: Using an M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation with a cooling structure, such as a heatsink. You can attach one to your M.2 SSD yourself, either in a single-sided format, or double-sided format. There are also M.2 SSDs that have cooling structures (such as heatsinks) built in.

Sequential read speed: 5,500MB/s or faster is recommended

Module width: 22mm width (25mm width is not supported)

Form Factor: M.2 type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110.
These numbers can be found on retail listings for M.2 SSD devices. The first two digits refer to the width, the remaining digits to the length.
Yup like the Western Digital SN850 with Heatsink will fit inside and is fast enough. $140 for 500 GB, $250 for 1 TB.

Just gotta wait til Sony adds it to OS this fall.

I did not pay anything as I am not buying this anyway. However, there was a convenient and working solution at launch, that's all I see. Price already went down since launch, no hurry to buy this as the console accepts external hard-drives and allows for easy transfer of any kind of content.

And how this helps the PS5 case? The feature is still not available and requires you to pay more for the same storage (if compared to the Xbox solution). Does not matter if these are faster, in the end both will work as their respective internal storage and so far the PS5 solution hasn't shown a massive improvement over the slower Xbox solution.
Xbox storage can be plugged in from the outside and taken to friends ha!

Paid 220 euros in December last year.

Xbox Seagate card 1 TB @ 2.4 GB/s with 3 year warranty .. costs £180.

Samsung 980 Pro M.2 1 TB @ 7 GB/s with 5 year warranty ... costs £180.

Why pay same price for less than half the speed and a much shorter warranty? Because you have to sadly.
Even if the opposite was true as suggested, it's still coming down in price fast due to competion while the proprietary is not. Standard parts are always the best longterm solution, there's no arguing that.

Exactly. PS4 uses a standard 2.5" internal SATA HDD/SSD, and standard USB external HDD/SSDs.

Now PS5 will use a standard M.2 internal NVMe SSD, and standard USB external HDD/SSDs.

As it should be to offer max choice for users and keep costs as low as possible.

Curious, what happens if you plug in gimped S version of games into X? Does it do the Smartdelivery download? How do you get rid of the extra X assets when you plug it back into the S?

PS5 solution work perfect with pc / laptop....

what about xbox solution ?
This is PCIE 3.0. It will not work on PS5.

You need PCIE 4

That's only 2.4 GB/S
Yes, but in a smaller form-factor with one chip that makes it much harder. Reaching the PS5 specs is actually easier because you have the space for multiple chips (with lower frequencies).

Did I read it wrong or does a PCIE 4X4 means you cannot use the PCIE 3.0 SSDs that are cheaper ?
No you didn't. You need a sony approved PCIE 4 m.2 SSD. Everything else won't work.

Well, you pay extra for the small form factor. Try to get an m.2 SSD as small and fast as this in the xbox (just one chip). And yes, there is the problem that currently only seagate offers the "stick". We need more competition there.

Wait a sec. Does the "is recommended" mean that it is recommended that the SSD is faster or that 5.5GB/s+ is recommended? That could mean that they also expect that the SSD can be slower than this.

I think the faster bit is recommended.

my biggest concern here is the 5.5gig. Smells a bit like Sony has lowered their baseline, and am suspecting fucking PC initiative.

Edit: turns out 7gig on presentation was in relation to the bus, not nvme drive spec. Tested 5.5 gig drives should yield comparable speed to internal spec. Rejoice, no downgrade. The only thing remaining is Sony to block below par drives.

I am sure drives which are not "Approved" will still work so if you wanted to get a real cheap internal drive just to house PS4 games instead of having to hang an external we could do it (not approved) . It would also be really interesting to see R&C running on a standard speed SSD to see how much of the game is impacted

Half the speed? Hahahaha don’t make me laugh. If we were using this on pc then I’d agree with you, but we’re talking consoles here. Will battlefield load twice as fast on ps5 versus Xbox?? No. Therefore that point is mute.
A 5 year “limited” warranty. Do you actually know what that covers??

About fucking time. It's so stupid that this hasn't been available. Having to delete games to install patches in other games got old a long time ago.

And people can screech all they want about "proprietary " nonsense, but I've had extended storage on my XSX for 9 months while you're all jerking off over faster, non-proprietay, non-existent PS5 storage that Sony has been dragging ass with. Hey, but at least it's eventually coming, unlike VRR.

Let's us know when an Xbox exclusive load as fast as Rachet or Miles or Demon Soul... people here saying proprietary hardware is good and cheaper 😂

But we aren’t comparing to pc because that’s not a direct comparison. Speed of the drive is irrelevant here. We are comparing consoles which only two factors are comparable. Size and price.
Speed and density (size) are what define the price of these NAND chips on SSDs.

Xbox proprietary = expensive than standard SSDs… you have faster SSDs near half the price of Xbox solution.
PS5 open = same price than standard SSDs

lol this piece of shit. 120gb cost 120 bucks. Which was an absolute rip off especially since I bought the Premium SKU with a measly 20gb (13 gb actual). The quality of games suffered because of it, games like Soul Calibur HD were neutered to hell, just to get to a pathetic file size.

But yeah, choices.

Why not plug in a USB and move the games instead of deleting during all this time?

Doesn't this confirm you can fit any SSD you want and Sony just warns you that it may perform slower?

Yes. Any SSD that fits the specs.
It is not a closed list… you can put any one with the size and specs listed.

Said that Sony will release a list with the major models compatible to normal console users not need to look at specs.

It is easier to just buy one from a compatible list that check specs to see if it will works.

Resident Evil 8 does.
Doom Eternal does.
Let's wait and see with Battlefield.

Sony probably gave them early access to the beta or at least confirmed to them that it has the specs to work. If it performs as quickly as the internal drive is another matter but I'm sure it will be tested soon enough.

Fuck me in the ass , 1tb for 400 dollars , that's like price of ps5 digital (if u can find one )
I'm pretty sure this 1 tb will have available storage in 800 gbs
U can literally buy a ps5 digital and double ur ps5 storage that way

But you're forgetting the narrative:

"We're going to be stuck paying high prices because the Series X drive is proprietary, at least we'll be able to buy SSD's for PS5 on the cheap"

The irony. Sure the solution is what's expensive, but we argued whether that solution made sense for gamers. Like justifying the price of a Bugatti Veyron vs a Laborghini Aventador, sure the Bugatti is faster, but does the 2M price tag make sense against 400k when at the end of the day, they're both supercars?
