EA brand boss Elle McCarthy says the term ‘gamer’ is outdated

Pay attention to what she's saying. They aren't aiming for casuals. She's specifically aiming for the activist, twitter users and ERA. These are people who normally don't buy video games and see "gamers" as toxic white cis males and thus see inhernt evil within the medium, thus their continued attempt to remove variety from games and replace it with what they deem fit. The average person does not think like these people do.
the moment i realized that place was really gone was in a discussion where some users continues arguing that now the term "gamer" was an entirely negative term and that the definition changed with time and that i was being stupid for not realizing that what i thought about the word didn't reflect what SOCIETY now thought about the term.

in the meanwhile lady gaga had just made a tweet the day before calling herself a gamer and everyone understood it as "someone who plays games" with no additional negative connotation.

some people live in their own little world and don't even relize it.

She's right. Gaming is now so ubiquitous and commonplace, it is no longer a subculture - or even an enthusiast culture. It's right there in the mainstream. There are no 'gamers', just as there are no 'TV-ers' - it's weirder to NOT be one than it is to be one.
gaming is not that ubiquitous to reach that level.
we still call people that often go to cinema as "movie goers" and cinema is probably even more commonplace than videogames

You're delusional. Video games eclipse movies in revenue by many orders of magnitude. You're not special anymore.

What? what a hell is she talking about?

Why is it outdated? I'm not saying she is wrong, but I don't get the argument.

Corporations really have a knack for saying technically true and largely uncontroversial things in the most dystopian ass sounding way, don't they?

To further the point, whether it's ubiquitous or not, there's clearly a level of "I'm passionate about something," versus "I do it occasionally," my uncle has heard a Type O Negative song before, that doesn't mean we should abolish the term "metalhead," Something being mainstream doesn't cancel out the fact that there exist people who identify with it more than others. What it comes down to is that they're trying to appeal to the crowd that WANTS it to be ubiquitous, that feels like having a word like "gamer," implies some sense of exclusivity that precludes "normies," from taking part. They're trying to liberate the word because in their minds, it's a barrier preventing people from entering the hobby. They equate it to boys club gatekeeping. I get the logic, but it's trying to solve a problem that exists only in a certain group of people's minds. We aren't waiting outside of Gamestop with baseball bats trying to intimidate people who decide to buy a console.

never said that i'm special (mostly you have prejudices in this case), but i know many people that don't play games, ever, can't say i know people that have never gone to watch a movie with friends

and even that, much like "movie goers", the term gamer indicates someone that is passionate about the medium, not just one that uses it...but also loves to read and discuss about it...much like you don't have the term "drivers" but you have car-enthusiast for people that don'y just drive, but also are passionate about cars and look to fellow aficionados to discuss the objetc of their interest

I don’t get her. Why would the number of people (gamers) who interact with the medium (video games), which have gameplay loops to stand out from other interactive media, even affect the meaning of “gamers”? We still call people readers, viewers, movie-goers, whatnot, and those labels don’t require a certain number of people to be not outdated.

Translation: I make up word salads to hopefully turn your attention away from our horrible loot boxes (card packs) that pray on people's weaknesses while raking in millions / billions.
Give back through social impact. I need to commit that one to memory.

lol

I don't get it? Do people just get triggered and can't think straight?

Read carefully what is being stated man.

" You can now interact with almost everything through play—from an interest area like interior design to a movement like Black Lives Matter or exploring your sexual identity,” she said."

They are talking about interacting with things, like interior design stuff where they use 3D models, VR, AR etc Does that fucking mean they want that in "video games"? They are simply giving examples of interactions.

VR in porn exist, thats not fucking saying they want that in their video games, they are simply stressing that the concept to interacting with tech to engage with people exist beyond just "gaming". A few words have triggered some of you so badly, you basically stopped thinking and reacted to a few words lol Nothing in that article is even remotely suggesting what you are talking about man.

Funny enough, some of that shit is already in the medium and has been in the medium for years

You going to stop them or? =)

You accuse me of poor reading comprehension and yet she prefaces this statement with:

Gaming is no longer a medium or an industry, it is simply ‘interactive’. You can now interact with almost everything through play—from an interest area like interior design to a movement like Black Lives Matter or exploring your sexual identity,” she said.

In what version of the english language is this not the contextual backdrop against which she follows up with her next sentence?

By your logic, the whole statement would make even less sense than it is currently does.

If the second sentence is not intended to be about gaming, then WTF does it have to do with gaming no longer being an industry or medium (which on its own is utter slippery steaming bullshit)?

Honestly, if I am misreading it, I wouldn't even blame me. The whole statement is confusing and all around incoherent.

The fact that "people can interact with things that are extraneous to gaming somehow changes the definition of videogaming as an activity"? WTF!?! What the fuck is she even saying?!.... I don't even.

The statement still makes sense man, its not saying SHIT about adding in any of that in a game, it is saying those things have interactions, like people who do interior design using VR and shit. NO WHERE in her statement does she say some shit about adding in some sexual shit in a game, you assumed all that shit with no where in the article it even saying that. Her statements about those things being interactive, thats it, not that THOSE TOPICS will be put in a game. Fucking read man lol

Enjoy the ignore man, read better lol

You've not answered the question...

WTF does being able to interact with things unrelated to gaming have to do with the definition of gaming?

It's a non-sequitur. There's no logical coherence in the statement.

It's like saying, Sport is no longer a medium or industry because people can play other things.... wait... wut?!?

Makes no fucking sense.

I'm really trying to read that statement, but when the statement itself makes no fucking sense, it's pretty hard to understand the intent of the author.

EA changer the word "gamer" for the word "sucker".

Watch them change the name in their products to state shit like "Electronic Art" instead of game lol

Be like "When pausing the electronic art, go to the menu". If they really believe what this lady is saying, they should just change the text to say something else other then game to show they really mean it should be called something else, lead by example.

I kinda understand her point.
If you watch movies, you don't have a tag attached to you either like "movie watcher".
And these days playing games is just as common as watching movies. It's not as niche as it used to be 20 years ago.

Maybe not if you casually watch a movie. But if you are in the cinema every week, always up to date on the latest movies, use specialized online platforms to read/talk about movies and so on, people might give you label..

Well, we do have the term for those who watch the whole series at once - binge watchers no?

Lol this just makes her sound like she doesn’t like being called a gamer, which just makes people want to call her a gamer even more, with the intent to poke fun at her. And by extension they will do this to all gamers, so what the hell is her point in all this? Lmao

This is stupid. “Gamer” is just a word to communicate an idea to people, just like cinemaphile or audiophile.

gaming being commonplace is all the more reason the word exists

Gaming was (and maybe still is to the older generation) associated with gambling. One of my high school teacher assistant didn't understand why I love gaming and why I think gaming is good. (No I don't gamble and don't have a positive view on gambling)

That said, companies rebrand all the time. It's fine if EA want to be rebranded to interactive entertainment instead of gaming and call their audience something else other than gamers. I am still happy to call myself a gamer. As for negative association with the word gamer, it is only damaging if I let it become part of who I am.

On that note, I have always find it weird how people try to define what a gamer is, like the person must play this much a day/week or love these platforms/genres or else the person is fake. It's absurd.

I mean, she’s got a point: “gamers” know what EA is about and don’t buy their shit anymore. They make money marketing to the fifa/nfl casuals who religiously buy their roster updates year after year.

They’d rather pretend the people who dislike them don’t exist.

Most of those despicable gamers are probably far too acquainted with EA's shenanigans to be worthy of acknowledgement. Better discredit them by default.
