Either way, FS is not "technically best looking". It is technically impressive, no doubt. Best looking is entirely subjective regardless of how much tech is involved.
MSFS is the most realistic looking and draws the most awes visually speaking 98% of the time you are viewing the game.

I'd say based on those two things alone it's the graphics king.

Ratchet is just a lot more linear and cartoony, not that that's a bad thing, but photo realism gets more reactions and graphics king awards, generally speaking.

That goes back to how are you judging the graphics. Are you looking for most realistic? Then MSFS. Are you looking for more artistic? Then R&C.

Either one has just as much claim to "graphics king" as the other. It still comes to your personal opinion as to which you think looks better. It is entirely subjective.

While both are technically impressive, R&C > Flight Sim in terms of sheer graphical fidelity.
  • Flight Sim: 30 FPS, no ray-tracing and real-time reflections, different LOD settings, low-poly textures at ground level, no NPCs or AI, no particle effects, no animations.
  • Ratchet & Clank: 60 FPS + ray-tracing + LOD 0 same assets that are used in cutscenes + no low-poly textures + unprecedented density, elements, and particle effects on screen + NPC/AI calculations, all at the same time.
Flight Sim is doing some pretty impressive things under the hood too. The game includes literally the entire world and their textures are of such high quality that the game actually takes up petabytes of data. They stream in data on the fly using the internet to make sure you get near photorealistic environments at all times. We finally have power of the cloud. BTW, the game has traffic in cities and animals in the wilderness. It also has real world planes populating the skies when playing online.

They are also using a fully dynamic realtime GI system. Everything casts accurate shadows. Every single cloud has their own shadows. Every single light source on the ground during night time illuminates the sky including your own airplane. Every single street light (literally tens of thousands of them) has its own light source. All volumetric.

I dont understand why you are bringing up a lack of NPCs or AI when this game is literally pushing the CPU more than ANY game in the history of gaming. Everything in this game from the weather systems to wind and cloud physics is all realtime and not baked. It's simulating things Ratchet and other traditional games dont even bother baking. Besides, GT Sports doesnt have any particle effects or animations or NPCs, should we also dismiss the game when discussing visuals? What about Driveclub? Arguably the best looking game of last gen with easily the best looking weather effects of all time. By your definition, DC would be instantly disqualified from any discussion.

Bottomline is that Flight Sim is the first true photorealistic game and it is not faking any of it.

I agree it is pretty awesome. I actually started my first comment saying that it is technically impressive.

The main point is that R&C and FS shouldn't be compared in the first place because they are very different things. And also because R&C is doing things that FS isn't (and vice versa). But if someone still compares the two, my vote would go to R&C. And I could be wrong, but that's just my personal opinion that R&C looks better (because of the aforementioned reasons)

Sorry to say, but that's just part of the optimization process. It doesn't have to push it hard and we already see the improvements. To me Star Citizen is pushing it way harder in general. A "game" doesn't have to be realistic to be more impressive and that's why in general Star Citizen is the most impressive game imo.

It's the best looking "simulator" atm, not game.

It looks very very good but maybe I'm just getting old and jaded but it never really wowed me like some older "next gen" games.

Honestly, I think details that you mostly need to completely stop playing and zoom in to notice are not worth while. The resolution increase is nice but the ray tracing effects dont feel that impressive since a lot of the time you can replicate the effect with SSR without most people noticing. I think the quality of the fur effects are more impressive than RT but again, you mostly have to stop and really inspect the character models to notice.

It looks great but there are a few things that are lacking polish. The weird floating that occurs when you are traversing what looks like flat surfaces where you can sometimes float indefinitely until you blip and take damage as the game resets you and random invisible walls are really out of place given the otherwise high levels of visual polish. Game is super fun though.

That I can agree with. I said something similar on the first page. There should be separate categories for racing games and sims vs traditional games.

I think Avatar might be the new king going forward though. Even if it gets downgraded like their last game Division did, it will look better than anything on consoles or PCs at the moment.

One of the most amazing looking games ever made, yes. The best looking ever? It's up there, but I wouldn't say it's the single best largely due to the enormous influence of personal preference and art style. It's absolutely the best ever in its intended art style/direction. Nothing tops it there. But it's hard for me to place it over another game that utilizes a vastly different art and graphics style and succeeds at a very high level with what was intended.

I personally have called it the best looking game ever, but realized just how flawed a statement that may be. Flight Simulator is one of the best looking games ever made, but it likely isn't fair to call it the best looking game ever because, again, that comes down to personal preference.

I wait to see the animations and level of polish before calling anything out of ubisoft the king of something...

I mean sure, raw graphic may be the best out there but it's no use if everything break when you move...

It is probably the reason why i was never really impressed by cyberpunk.

Man I remember when AC games would go toe to toe with ND when it came to animations. How the mighty have fallen.

They are making this game first person for some dumb reason so they dont have to worry too much about animations but I see what you are saying. Division, AC Valhalla and other Ubisoft made games look great but they lack that x-factor of Sony exclusives.

Division 2 and for honor have good animations overall.

And not all sony games have incredible animations, days gone being one of them (in the gameplay, not talking about cutscenes, those were great).

Also human combats in horizon was painfully shitty animated.

Hopefully in the nextgen, everyone and their mothers are gonna start to use motion matching and something similar to euphoria in all the realistic looking games.

Fidelity in a couple of years is gonna be incredible for the characters, it's imperative for everyone to fix their shitty animations, fast!

Every Ubisoft Game gets a downgrade. I dont trust these INENGINE stuff and particularly i dont trust Ubisoft.

I wonder if Ragnarok will top Ratchet?

Pretty sure that even though it's cross gen it should look fantastic.

Then there's Spiderman 2 which should look pretty good as well.

For state of the art graphics in a 3D environment, it's hard not to be wowed by what Ratchet does and how it looks. It's fucking stunning. In saying that, I would still say something like Symphony of the Night or Yoshi's Island are better looking games. Not on a technical level but artistically they're beautiful.

Edit- spelling!

The closer you get to the ground in FS, the uglier it gets. It only looks great at some heights you see in those gifs. The third gif already reveals what i've said.

Also just selected areas around the world look good, but the rest...not really.
Games with bigger scope (the entire earth) have to have some compromises than less ambitious linear games.

To me that doesn't change the fact that the graphics and world in MSFS have much more wow factor, ambition and the game looks better nearly at all times except maybe 2% of your playing time where rough edges become apparent.

It's just more impressive, and realism requires more demand.

When it comes to fun factor i gave flight sim 2/10

Seriously for me that is like the most boring game ever bro ( aside from truck simulator game i tried couple years ago)

Almost feel asleep after just an hour no offence
There's nothing offensive about what you said. It's a simulation game, it won't be a good experience to many people.

I feel the same with cinematic games but i really like Paradox games where you're basically looking at a map for hours ahah.

Your opinion is not fact, Flightsim is the most technically advanced game released so far. Your bullet points mean nothing as you have no idea what each game is calculating at any time. Both games look great but are vastly different in visual design, stupid comparison.

Best Technology

Microsoft Flight Simulator (Asobo Studio / Xbox Game Studios) - WINNER
The Last of Us Part II (Naughty Dog / Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Half-Life: Alyx (Valve)
Dreams (Media Molecule / Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Ghost of Tsushima (Sucker Punch Productions / Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Those were all last year's games, not current ones man. Ratchet wasn't even eligible.

Hades also won best game of the year, in the same awards, also beating FS. Do you think that means unequivocally that Hades was "the best" game made in the entire year?

I'll go one further. Do you think every winner of every category for the awards was the deserved winner? There were people that voted for games that didn't win you know. Does that make their opinion "wrong"?

Given all of those things, let's see if you recognize the irony of what I bolded in your statement.

It’s crazy to me how people are impressed with a google maps simulator. It’s visually impressive when things are viewed from a distance (satellite imagery). However, it is barely a game.
It's not supposed to be a "game." Games have rules and objectives. This is a simulator.

It's literally software that simulates flying, which includes sitting in the air for, potentially, hours at a time. It's also supposed to be extremely accurate in terms of planes and flight controls, so it seems to absolutely achieve it's goal. Trying to knock it down because it completely hits the mark for what it's trying to do, instead of not being something else, seems pretty unfair. People who want MS Flight Sim, love it, for what it does, and that's been true for decades.

R&C is EASILY the best looking game on the PS5 imo. I haven't got an Xbox or PC so I won't comment on those games.

Buuuuut... I do think the resolution drop in the RT60 mode is quite significant. It's enough to take the shine off the visuals IMO.

So I had been playing in the normal 60fps mode, cos I can easily live without the RT. Although fidelity at 40fps is the best way to play it I think, if you've got the tv for it.

Lupin3

It is (so far) the only game that keeps me waiting for the PS5 Slim. It looks fantastic. If only it was available on PC...

The problem with photo realistic graphics is that they age awfully bad.

Visually, years from now a newer flight simulator game will be better than the predecessor in every single way, to a point where the current version feels cheap and dated.

If the graphics don't hold in time, were they that great to begin with?

Honest question, have the people who shout "flight sim" actually played that... and Ratchet? Having played both, and going by the idea of best looking as opposed to most technologically proficient and/or demanding on the hardware I honestly don't get how you can put the sim in the same league even. I mean, even aside from the lack of comparable character animation and VFX (two huge components of what makes Ratchet so damned satisying on the eyes)... I just don't get how this is even a discussion, unless you are just an avid admirer of airplanes and dislike cartoony visuals.

The reverse could also be asked. When a survey was taken here several months ago, there was more PlayStation only people than anyone else. How likely do you think those guys will pick Flight Simulator? This question can be basically boiled down to which platform do you like the best? Both titles have pros and cons. I tend to be a little more impressed with Flight Sim if only because it is running quite well on the XSS, the platform many here claimed would hold back the entire console generation. I have both games but In the end there are no right answers because the whole thing is completely subjective.

That not really relevant to OP's question tho tbh..

We are glad that it runs well on your XSS, there seems to be a fair bit of pop-in and stuttering but its running at least.

I think the fact that Ratchet and Clank runs just as well on the lower priced SKU is equally a plus point and is actually pushing, and taking advantage of in a gameplay oriented way, the SSD is a nice sight to see in this generation. Something which hasn't happened yet anywhere else tbh.

So right back to personal opinion, I guess.

Its marketed as a game/simulator. The game has rules and objects albeit more free form. I'm not marking it down for what it does well. It just isn't impressive to me. For an example. An open world game such as GTA has flying, driving, interaction, AI, fluild simulation, and everything else in between that works as an overall package.

Also, I have gamepass ultimate and have played this on my PC (w/ a 3090).

Subjectivity is great isn’t it? Personally I think ori and the will of the wisps is one of the best looking games of all time. I think it looks better than ratchet. I also think flight sim looks better because it looks closer to real life than any game that has ever come before it. Ratchet looks great, no one is denying that.

This topic is just barely disguised console wars, as there is no objective way to determine the best looking game.

If MFS was a PS5 title, these "it's just Google maps" clowns would be changing their shorts every five minutes from constantly wetting themselves.

I don't know why anyone around here even brothers trying to have a decent discussion about anything non-Sony on this site. This place might as well be an official Sony sponsor.

I'd bet money that a large percent of posters here are the same guys that post "PS5 is better" every time Xbox tweets anything.

It’s way more fun than Google Maps. Google Maps doesn’t even have VRR.

Technically MS Flight Sim is pushing graphics harder than R&C that's not debatable unless you need a psychologist.

Visually depends on the person, personally I haven't liked the current R&C art style since it was introduced in 2007.

Many games "push" graphics and yet still look pretty ugly lol

This comes down to subjectivity.

Nice looking game but whatever. I'm not here for that 😂

Anyone with a PS5 digital edition able to comment on the console?
What is operating sound like? Fan noise?
Does it ramp up the fans during intense games?
Or is it quiet running PS4 games at higher resolutions?

So many questions cause I want to put down my deposit on one for the August shipment.

Oh and Ratchet looks nice but please answer my questions those who can 😂

Sorry OP I don't want to hijack the whole thread, just maybe a small part of it 😂

i have one. Mine has almost unnoticeable coil whine (like you have to have everything quiet and put your ear close to the console) when putting it to rest mode. After a few minutes it goes away.

I have mine horizontal and put a cloth over it as a cover. One time I forgot to remove it and the fans started going full speed. The sound was not as loud as PS4 but the intensity of the fans was comparable to the PS4 pro when playing God of war, but they were loud.

With that said, it was only that time since it might have been overheating, and went silence almost instantly after I removed the cloth. In everyday use, I have played for more than 5 hours and the fans never kick in (or at least they don’t make any sound).

Look I don't disagree with you that it's very good looking but at the same time the topic is best looking game made and regardless of interactivity SlimySnake SlimySnake still makes a valid point based on their opinion of what they perceive to be the best looking.

So if this was talkin about interactivity in regards to just a video game discussion on physically playing the game I would actually agree with you because if Ubisoft or some other third-party did something like this I don't really know if everybody would be trying to give them praise from making Google Earth with very little interaction in fact a lot of people would be throwing them under the bus for doing some scumbag crap in making half of a game or something like that lol

So I actually agree with both of you I do feel the game offers very little interaction but at the same time sliney is allowed to like a video game that he believes is the best-looking regardless of that.

The game is after all a flight game it is not a game about driving cars in the desert or anything like that which means those elements can't really be interacting with the same degree because it's not really the point of the game.

In my personal opinion the best-looking next-generation game easily is going to be a demon souls remake.
