Microsoft Flight Simulator - Xbox Series X vs Xbox Series S Graphics Comparison

True, it does not have to worry about animations.

It also has to "worry" about animations. You know, Aircraft have moving parts. Do people think all the gauges in the cockpit move by willpower and a pinch of magic dust?

The mental gymnastics some go through in order to discount the relevance and the achievements of this sim is absolutely hilarious.

To be clear, in my post that he replied to, I was speaking of character animations. Obviously objects in simulations move. That isn't discounting the relevance of this sim. Or, at least, that wasn't my intent. It is discussing differences in graphical aspects.

And what exactly makes you think character animations are more of a "worry?"

I don't know that they are any "more" of a worry than anything else. Character animations are simply not present. It was a general observation.

And other animations are present, so that's pretty much inconsequential.

I don't know many games that put you in front of something like this, and each of these gauges is consistently animated.

Yep. There is a lot going on there and it certainly is impressive.

27 GB update? So much for that thing called preloading.
I wanted to play when I got home but now I got to wait till later tonight.
"Smart" delivery huh

My Valve Index is due for delivery in 2 days, gives me time to get all patched up. Am so stoked to try FS in VR, though scared to see what performance is like. For reference Elite Dangerous blew my mind in VR in regards to sense of presence, this is going to be on a whole different plane of existence... :messenger_sunglasses:

Edit: whoops, meant to post on review thread

First time with day one patches?

This sim gets a 30-50 gb update every month. May want to get used to it.

I don't know if there was some big inside joke I missed but I expected this game to look way better than it does. People around here were claiming it was the only true next gen game, etc, but wtf. Massive disappointment.

you're parked in jet on an auto-generated extrusion of a global satellite map what did you expect?

they key visuals are when you are up in the air and in one of the select cities

Yeah and that's where I spent most of the time.

The first image was from one of the initial locations they suggested. I also tried Egypt from that selection before flying to other random locations. Honestly I just don't understand what I'm missing about this game that people seemed hyped about. I swear in various threads people were comparing the visuals here to AAA games and I can appreciate that the planes themselves may be painstakingly replicated, but the rest of the visuals don't really match up regardless of where you are.

Do you realize this is an open world game, do you?
Can you show any other open game with better visuals than when you are flying? I think everyone agreed that when you are flying low the illusion breaks.

Whole world has been recreated at this fidelity when flying.

That's the big deal.

lol amazing.

Literally the entire world is in the game with some of the most breathtaking graphics seen to date in a game, but because you can't just land and read the street signs it's a "massive disappointment" lol.

I'm guessing you guys haven't actually played this on an XSS... It's bad. There is like a stencil around the outline of the plane that is a pixel wide that occludes the sfx and the effect is super pronounced when banking or moving the camera while outside the plane. It creates a really shitty pixelated effect over water especially. Check behind the tail in my first pic. Also there is quite a lot of pop in on geometry and textures. Idk wtf is going on. In the video they are flying mostly straight and moving the camera slowly which hides the issue.

No one is saying the series S version has the best graphics though.

it’s still the entire world anyway, which is downright remarkable and that is more impressive to me than having nice car models for example.

I only have a Series S.

Its impressive it can run on that system. Also it's locked 1080p, which is higher than what it should have been, so lower settings.

Forza 5 looks amazing though, even on the S.

I don't understand why having 200 million square mile of game map gives them a pass. I'm guessing your use of "breathtaking" was hyperbole.

I'm not saying they don't have cool tech with the clouds, great plane physics, and nice plane models. But that video is pretty misleading, it's a bigger gap than it implies.

I'm going to assuming you are being genuine, and not baiting here so i'll give my input.
You have to remember this is a flight sim, so its made to be seen from the air. And from the air, no other game comes close to be honest, at least in terms of photorealism.

Just a few point to remember in regards to the tech being displayed here. The game is the entire planet, literally. Which means it has to stream data constantly to render the game. The devs estimated that you would need a 20,000 terabyte SSD to store all the world data locally lol.
The game is having to stream ground data using Bing maps (similar to Google Earth), and has a AI system that generates buildings and ground detail on the fly using the Bing map data. Thats why the ground graphics can break up like you are showing in that above screen, but as a game meant to be played from the air, its a understandable restriction giving the fact that the entire planet is here.

A lot of the buildings and stuff like the pyramids, have been hand made by the devs, whihc is why they keep high detail even when right on top of them. The devs are constantly adding new assets to the game, and will be for the next 10 years or so. They have to use the AI generation system for most of the ground detail though is it would take decades for a huge dev team to make assets fro evey little bit of detail on planet Earth, whihc obviously would be impossible to do.

Also i dont know what experience you have had with flying games in the past, but usually ground detail would be very flat, often featureless, with textures than the N64 would laugh at when you got close to the ground. So in that sense FS is a huge jump for flying games.

I'm playing on PC, and havent played the XSS version, but just try to keep in mind 2 things when playing this game -
1. Its a Flight Sim, made to be seen from the air.
2. There is the entire planet on show here, literally.

I get all that, I'm honestly not dissing the technical achievement.

Look at a small sample of posts from this very thread and you may understand why I was put off not only by the streaming elements, but the other visual issues I mentioned:
Game looks incredible on Series x but series s looks great for the little console that could.

fantastic job on series s

its performance caught me off guard

This is setting the bar for what console games can look like.

Horizon 5 is going to have a hard time beating it, but I look forward to the competition.

Horizon 5 is multi-gen so I don't think it will beat this until the series moves to next gen and drops the old gen.

Best looking console game ever, and it's not even close.

Series S has no problems keeping up with the X.

Maybe if I start breathing the aircraft fumes, I'll start seeing it too.

Well again, judging a flying games graphics on what they look like at ground level would be like playing a football game and saying the crowd in the top corner look a bit shit when you zoom right in on them.

Like i said, i havent played the XSS version, but the game on PC when viewing the world from the air, its easily the most photorealistic game i have ever played. I mean it basically looks real.

If you want to focus on Series S, it's using high/ultra settings for Forza Horizon 5.

For Flight Simulator it's using medium settings due to higher resolution than optimim.

There is scope for improvement with Flight Simulator.

This is a thread ABOUT THE XSS VERSION. The original post was a video comparison which is misleading at best imo. I would agree with you about your analogy in general, but my session earlier today didn't square with the posts people made which I quoted.

The XSS is the console some claimed would ruin console gaming this generation. People didn't think the XSS would even be able to run this game at all. For a $300 console this game does look amazing on it. Compare it to a $300 PC running this and see which one looks more impressive. It's all relative. Everyone has an opinion so maybe you just aren't easily impressed or maybe you have unrealistic expectations.

Omg! This is literally the WORST looking game of all time!!! I'm going to buy a Series X & S and a copy of it today and smash them all to register my disgust.

State of it!

there's a loading problem with your system. either network or ram/vram related. this stuff only happens when these are stressed

if its xbox, well, its probably network related

Imagine if you went into a returnal thread and pointed its last gen looking in game chracter model or some dull looking texture in rift apart, the same people liking king potatoe would be crying there eyes out.
Maybe people would find excuses like:

It's a third person shooter, you are not supposed to see the character from the front...

Or

You weren't supposed to go there and see that dull texture, duh.

We don’t need to imagine. In fact, just mosey on over to the GT7 thread to read the many complaints about the trees.

these are random non-photogramettery shots from a land no one has no idea about

you can see that no such weird "blobby" stuff is present in my shots unlike his "weird" shots. clearly his network speed is not up for the task or there are some other issues he's experiencing. its not that bad when you're that close to buildings/map. its bad, but its nowhere near bad. its good enough to appreciate the details, actually.

doors, windows are clearly visible and detailed

chimneys are noticable. stairs are pretty good when you consider it is supposed to be a low quality model

you can see some windmills in the far. not relevant to the topic XD

antennas can be seen. buildings are in their full form

the texture and the detail on some of the doors shocked me when i saw them up close.

My console has crashed just in the OS a few times, like hard lock. So I've been worrying that something may be off. Downloads are insanely slow as well, which is decidedly suspicious since I have fiber.

Talk about cherry picking your shots to prove your point. Anybody can look at the thousands of videos on Youtube to see how stunning this truly game is.
I'd get a video of the occlusion halo around the plane and artifacts over water, but I've been notified by a mod that since I failed to report my own original post as harassment I'm on ban warning... I guess. To be honest I didn't understand their message. I guess it's okay to make personal attacks on someone if they have an unpopular opinion. Cherry picking implies I went out of my way to find the pics I posted but they were literally just my early experiences.

My shots were from the right near the Phoenix, Arizona airport. Not exactly an exotic destination and definitely not near one of the featured locations. This does look much better. Where is this?

This will be my last post in here since I don't want to get banned for questioning hyperbole.

when it works, it works. when it does not, those weird blob happens. they specifically happen when I downloaded some stuff in the background. game simply relies on high amounts of data traffic to gather enough map information. if the map information is wonky, the buildings will look weird/pixelated/not loaded

Maybe he's playing from his submarine, cabin in the woods, or from the space station, where he gets no internet? Can't believe the nerve of MS to not ship the game on approximately 25 thousand discs.

Yeah and that's where I spent most of the time.

The first image was from one of the initial locations they suggested. I also tried Egypt from that selection before flying to other random locations. Well If I might chime in, few things kind of stand out, the whole world, I guess pretty good Forza tech graphical engine + pretty great physical engine (which seems to be overlooked, obvoisly play on simulation to see it in full colors), nicely crafted sound engine, which believe or not sounds like a real thing. If you don't have attachment to flying machines, it might not be apparent, but if you can get 80% of flying inside your room, it's pretty big, at least for me. For me it's deeply emotional experience, but hey, does not have to be for everyone.

Disclaimer: I have PPL (private pilot licence), flying from Cessna 152 to bigger aircraft like Piper M600. Don't own any of these planes sadly :messenger_pensive: Always lending them, this is where gets expensive really quick and now with Covid, this is game came in the best timeline for me.

Don’t feed the virgin troll guys.
Don't argue with virgin about anything, they are unable to un-fuck their bad opinions.
