lol I wear contacts and after a few mins of playing ratchet my eyes get blurry from all the stuff going on
Me too. I actually changed my pair a few days ahead because I thought they had gone bad or something.

I prefer the gold coin drops instead of bolts because they look fantastic, literally thousands on screen at once, but had to turn them off because it was very hard to find enemies. They game throws dozens of enemies at you in some areas and with reflections everywhere its information overload. Also love the damage numbers, but also had to turn it off as well to remove some of the clutter on screen. Ratchet is definitely pushing visual in a density I just havent seen before. I thought Returnal with its particle system was impressive but this is on another level.

Aesthetics are always subjective. Personally, the facial animations in TLOU 2 give it top marks, imo. Cartoonish characters don't really give me the vibe of "best looking game". The environments and animations of TLOU 2 are mind-blowing. But that's me.

Having said all that.....I haven't played R&C yet so.....I need to get on that.

For me it's maxed out cyberpunk on PC (on a 2080ti with a 9900k @ 5.2ghz) still, followed by RC. MS flight sim gets an honorary mention as it can look stunning at times and quite mediocre at others (on a 2080ti with a 9900k @ 5.2ghz).

I have been gaming a very long time. I have been through many generations and remember being promised Toy story level graphics many moons ago. .

Playing R&C A Rift apart (especially with a good hdr tv) is an unreal experience. Cranking the game into Fidelity mode makes toy story seem very primitive today. It actually feels and looks like playing a pixar movie. It gets my vote because the game is just an amazing achievement. In my eyes this is the new graphics king by a pretty big margin. I know guys came come on here with their $1200+ rigs saying they can push X games at X frames per second. Fuck all that. AT 30FPS IT"S AMAZING!

The Ray Tracing mode at 60FPS may still be the best looking game to date!
$1200 rigs 🤣

You'd be lucky to get a 30 series card for $1200. Ya that's understated.
you can get a prebuilt pc on newegg right now with a 3060 but thats basically a 2060 super or a 6 tflops card. With DLSS, it might be on par with next gen consoles but only if it runs at half the resolution like we saw in Doom.

But yeah, most 3080 PCs go for $2.5k-3.5k. And thats basically the goto card for gaming enthusiasts at the moment and should offer 2x more performance than PS5/XSX.

Ratchet looks amazing, but I have been going back through RDR2 now that is has dlss support and I can play with everything set to ultra and walking through Saint Denis at night is truly incredible.

Saying any game is the best looking game is very subjective.

The game's pixar film aesthetics may not be to everyone's taste. Personally it was a super impressive experience for me from a graphical standpoint but I appreciate good looking games that have more realistic aesthetics a whole lot more! For example Last of Us Part 2 imo was one of the best looking games from a more realistic viewpoint, playing that @ 60fps on PS5 is even more immersive, I'd love to see that game on PC maxed out on all settings. People always refer to RDR2 but the character models and aesthetics in TLOU2 impressed me more. That's not to say one is better than the other, it's just my personal taste.

But Rift Apart is a game that has raised the bar and it gets me super excited for the future of gaming!

And that's just it, 2x more performance at 5-7 times the price. Oof.

Took some Ratchet screenshots recently. I think i can post them now that the game has been out for a while. Some might be late game.

Just the sheer number of things on screen is very impressive.

Finished it yesterday, it was an insane experience, such a super polished game, so much stuff on screen, the animations are of cartoon quality, so much life. 🤩

I wouldn’t say it’s the best looking game ever though, it’s such a specific visual style that won’t be for everyone, it’s like saying Raya is the best looking movie. For the animated style it’s no doubt at the top though!

It looks amazing, but it’s nothing compared to Flight Sim.
While both are technically impressive, R&C > Flight Sim in terms of sheer graphical fidelity.
  • Flight Sim: 30 FPS, no ray-tracing and real-time reflections, different LOD settings, low-poly textures at ground level, no NPCs or AI, no particle effects, no animations.
  • Ratchet & Clank: 60 FPS + ray-tracing + LOD 0 same assets that are used in cutscenes + no low-poly textures + unprecedented density, elements, and particle effects on screen + NPC/AI calculations, all at the same time.

Your opinion is not fact, Flightsim is the most technically advanced game released so far. Your bullet points mean nothing as you have no idea what each game is calculating at any time. Both games look great but are vastly different in visual design, stupid comparison.

Best Technology

Microsoft Flight Simulator (Asobo Studio / Xbox Game Studios) - WINNER
The Last of Us Part II (Naughty Dog / Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Half-Life: Alyx (Valve)
Dreams (Media Molecule / Sony Interactive Entertainment)
Ghost of Tsushima (Sucker Punch Productions / Sony Interactive Entertainment)

Technically, yes. But I think there are plenty of other better looking games from an art design standpoint. Guilty Gear Strive, Fuga, 13 Sentinels, etc.

Graphical fidelity is not important and people need to move on.

Fidelity can help to create an art style that was before not possible due to technical limitations. I would argue that fidelity is almost as important as art style.

Why say it's a stupid comparison and then come up with that award as reasoning, which is an equally stupid comparison?

Technically advanced in some areas, where others are advanced in other areas. since FS isn't doing that much when you fly just straight for hours.

So no..your wrong.

I think both are incredibly impressive for different reasons. Aesthecically R&C is more impressive but on a technical level Flightsim is simply untouchable (as this award attests).

That award doesn't attest anything. It's people comparing wildly different games and techs, just like in this thread.

HL: Alyx let's you physically grab a box, flip it over to dump all the stuff on the table, and pick out the ammo to put it in your backpack. Or catch a headcrab mid jump and smack it against the wall.

That is no less impressive than Flight Sim photo realistic world building, or Dreams endless abilities to create games.

As you said, stupid comparison.

$1200 isn't a lot for a rig...
People don't know what to do with ram, but memory is the key to intelligence, more RAM greater the intelligence that can be manifested. Ram is $$$ when you talking TBs, or Tens of TBs.
Gonna give a shout out to CUTSCENES in the last of us part 2. The game doesnt look next gen by any means, but I dont think I have ever seen cutscene models look this good before.

Excellent looking game, just didn't like the plot direction. Too creative, too fanficky for my tastes.

It's hilarious that many are comparing this game to games that have not even released yet.

Most of all the "better visual" games are still in development and can turn out like shit in the end.
To be fair this game was getting compared to other games when this wasn’t released. It is a great looking game though

And the GDC award is wrong is it? Mate best tech award at the Game developer's awards is highly coveted. Literally developers praising their peers for excellence within their field. Look at the games it beat to win best tech.....now go take a break before you say something really stupid.

It's not people it's developers, they know more than you or I.

Best looking? I'd say it is up there, the art style combined with the sheer talent of Insomniac puts it among the best. But best looking is very subjective, some prefer ultra realism, while others prefer sprite games over any 3D game.

Most technical impressive? Eh, I wouldn't think so, the games that stand out to me for that award would be Minecraft RTX, Flight Simulator and Metro Exodus EE. The Last of Us II as well, for pulling those graphics off on the original PS4 hardware.

But were not arguing or debating best tech award. Best tech award doesn't mean best graphics. But then comparing these two games is like apples to oranges.
