FIFA 23 Will Be Free-To-Play, According To A FIFA Leaker

I would like to bet against this happening. EA's licensing costs for FIFA have to be way higher than what Konami pays.

This would be insanely stupid.

You don't slaughter your cash cows.

I expect a limited freeplay demo at best.

If I am wrong I will play fifa 64 instead of iss the rest of the year.
what? theyre not slaughtering anything..it makes perfect sense..the cash cow is in the mtx of ultimate team..not the game itself. with this, they release the same shit every year, no stupid costs into physical versions, no fees, just straight up f2p bullshit with mtx. if anything, it should make them more money.

Because F2P mobile phones make a BILLION in one year, something like Sony Music game Fate/Grand Order that made in one year over one billion and probably passed 5 billion mark right now. More market penetration = more MTX = more money.
I'm absolutely gobsmacked that people still need to have this spelled out for them.

The user base of Fifa will double if it goes F2P. That is the hook to get you in and quite literally the point of free to fucking play. To get your ass in the ecosystem.

Man F2P with EA, you probably have to pay to go to a different menu, pay to turn subtitles on, etc.
No thanks.
Yup.

The future of gaming boys and girls! And when you think this shit started with a piece of fucking horse armour...Unbelievable.

The new gaming industry crash can't come soon enough.

And to all the geniuses who say "well..hurr...durr...you know...you don't HAVE to buy it,you can still play the game just fine without buying it." And then they proceed to buy it with their money, afterall "it's only like x dollars" as they say...So what's the harm?!?Right?!

Well congratz!!! Because of you horse armour expanded into the shitfest of hero gaas garbage and microtransaction filled 70 dollar games that plague the gaming landscape nowadays.Yay! What was the harm right??

And just to stay on topic with FIFA,this is you after buying those FUT packs from dear EA:

Surprised people believed the rumors.
This isn’t a platformer or racing game or FPS. Or a genre people aren’t convinced of. Most people remotely interested in football games and with cash to spare buy FIFA. Going F2P isn’t going to dramatically change the revenue picture for EA. They won’t do it. Makes no sense.

The (now disgraced) leaker should be ashamed of his words and deeds

Well, it makes sense. We knew they make way more money from microtransactions than from selling the game.

So by making it F2P would help them have way more players, meaning they'd get way more money from microtransactions. Pretty likely that extra would be higher than the money they get from selling the game.

This is compatible with to continue selling the game, which would be the F2P game, some paid FUT packs and paid game modes that wouldn't be free in the F2P version.

"FIFA 23 FUT only" is free to play, and "FIFA 23 full game" is still $70.
This would make total sense.

Why the fuck would they make an easy 20 million seller F2P? Makes zero sense.
Because the money they make with microtransactions is several times bigger than the money they make by selling the game.

Making it F2P would mean way more money from microtransactions. And making it F2P is compatible with to continue selling the game.

I could go either way. For most games with micros F2P is probably the most profitable route. With FIFA, Madden, 2k, I'm just not as sure. There are a ton of people who play and don't spend on the pack modes. And the likely big spenders on sports games are probably already paying 70 for the privilege of spending all season long anyway. Are there enough potential whales out there, who don't already buy the games, to offset all those lost initial sales? Don't know either way if I'm being honest. Just find it less likely than I would for other genres.

The thing is that in F2P games over 80 or 90% of the players don't pay anything. But they bring friends to play the game who end buying, or keep their friends who buy playing the game longer. And their data/metrics helps to improve the game in future updates.

And well, being F2P highly increases the usercount, meaning that they end having more paying users.

And well, they always can have 2 versions: the normal $70 one + microtransactions and the F2P one that would have some content or game modes (pretty likely the most played one by those who don't pay for microtransactions) locked.
