People hate what they are afraid. These guys are afraid, that the console market will die, and hand held market will take over.

I wouldn't doubt it though. We have the switch, with a dock. Its a console and a handle held at the same time. This eliminates the need to sit-down and play your games on tv.

Consoles as of now are not worth it. Gamers who grow up with consoles, are grown up now. In 20 years, they will be 60 years old.

New generation like convenience. They dont like sitting down on a couch to play COD. They play on their phone alot. They would like to have a switch like device for PlayStation and Xbox.

I mean, how much are you guys really expecting this thing to sell?

Steam Deck and controller were around 500k for reference.

Steam Deck is not going to kill consoles, PCs, or the Switch.

Report me for console warring
When the Switch came out, there were a lot of us here saying things like:

"They [Nintendo] should just make a powerful home console"
"
I don't play games on the go myself"

"Handheld gaming is died"

"Only 720p display?!"

Exactly.

Also: “Nintendo games are for kids, Mario and Zelda are always the same shit over and over!”

Now: “wow the Deck can emulate Mario and Zelda! Aha now I can play them on the go!”

I dunno. That's a mighty broad brush you're painting with. It takes all kinds.

Now, I wouldn't mind if everyone went hybrid--and perhaps, one day, as diminishing returns become more apparent they will--but you should hear the number of not necessarily old people begging for a console-only Switch to round out the lineup. They certainly wouldn't be happy with that future.

Sony and Microsoft would never release a console where you can install Windows and go wild

That's the main selling point for me. The hardware is interesting, but the option to go bonkers + having the whole PC library at my disposal is what gets me

So if MS or Sony decided to make a Switch-like portable, I would express a loud "meh" honestly

What do you think is better. Gaming on your couch only, or gaming on your couch, then taking the console to your bed, and play on it, while sleeping on your bed.

That was my experience with switch. It was a great experience. The ability to use the dock to play on tv, then taking out, and continue playing on my bed is absolutely gorgeous.

Yep! I like having the option to do both. It's nice to take the thing with you to bed, and then drop it into the dock when friends come over for a party game (of which For the King is the absolute king). BUT, I know that I'm not everyone, and the sales performance of the PS5 and XSX show that there's plenty of people hungry for consoles too, whether it be the form factor or just the power which no hybrid can match in the same generation.

I just don't think you can claim that the vast majority of the next gen of gamers want Switch-likes and nothing but. *shrug*

You have to remember the new generation for ps5 and xbox series x, were kids when the ps4 come out. These guys grow up with phones, and ipad. They are the new generation for console owners. Companies will try to adapt with time.

The switch comeout in 2017. After that, we had couple of pc like switches. We come a long way out, and got these devices.

And now, we are getting the steam valve.

We are experiencing the new change. Its happening fast.

Next gen, we might see these devices. The device I showed cost $1k, and it was crowd funding. Now imagine, someone like MS making these devices, specifically for gamepass? They will attract huge amount of people.

Now imagine if Sony and Microsoft did a 720p portable thing.
I think the steam deck is not going to be that great even in comparison to switch because of it's 64bit bandwidth of the LPDDR5, what even is valve's strategy with this thing, is it a console or not, will it be scalped a lot? There are a lot of elephants in this room.

Hybrids certainly could take off, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Microsoft specifically put out a portable Series S sometime in the future, but you can't assume it's going to happen because "It just makes sense" or "Everyone's doing it." And Valve and Nintendo are far from everyone.

Anecdotally, the high schoolers I taught last year were all hyped for the PS5 or PC gaming. Maybe more devices will turn the tide--and, again, I personally love the hybrid thing--but I think you're seriously jumping the gun here. Let's see if someone besides Nintendo can make a massive success out of this before declaring it the future of gaming.

Look at the YouTube video I posted. That device is inferior to the switch dock, and it can run graphic demanding games. The steam valve would be a good device.

We will see.

Its just that, everything started from small change. Remember that dlc horse. Now we have a giant money making mtx games. Its always the unexpected things, that can make huge change. Switch was a nobody, but now its a great console. It wasnt the games that made it great. It was the ability to change to console and hand held. Just like that horse dlc, Switch made valve make this device. Now Sony and MS are watching Valve now. I wouldnt be suprised, if they have analytic team tracking their process.

Steam Deck looks like a good product. I think it will mostly just be for enthusiasts though. Soccer moms aren’t going to be placing orders for these for their kids on the Steam store.
They would 100%. If they can buy MacBook for their kids, I wouldn't be surprised if they buy this for their kids. Its will mostly be the rich mothers who will buy it for their kids first. Then everyone will see these devices, and beg their family. and now you have avalanche of moms buying these devices.

Are you sure about that part in bold?

Sony failed with the Vita. Probably won’t bother with a handheld again for a long time.

MS is at least trying something different by letting people stream games to their phones/tablets so they are not about to bring out a dedicated handheld device.

You mean via pirating…
Emulation can be done legally. You just need to have a certain Switch model and dump your games to your PC. Same for the Wii U. I emulate all my PS2 games on PC and yes I did dump all my physical games straight to PC. Perfectly legal.

that said…I don’t see a lot of people being that honest. But emulation isn’t illegal in itself.

Most people don’t emulate their own games…

The new generation likes games, period. ALL of the consoles are selling out.

My problem with Nintendo is their stinginess. They act like only they do quality to keep their prices high. Such bs.

You use cheap parts, then give us cheap prices. You make cheap/effortless ports, then give us cheap prices.

It’s not that complicated. I’ve been negative on Switch lately simply because it’s weak. I want Zelda to look like Horizon Zero Dawn and from this perspective Switch has been an obstacle for where I want Nintendo games to go since there is no stationary alternative nowdays and it’s not doable on Switch.

Steam Deck on the other hand is simply complementing my PC. It’s not an obstacle to where I want PC gaming to go, it’s an added bonus. I still have several hundred games I can play at Ultra and 100+ fps on my PC, but now I can take them all (or some, we’ll see) and play on the go at lower settings as well.

🤷‍♂️

Yeah but the same people that are still criticizing the Switch, and were probably still calling it a "fad" while it was selling 15+ million a year, are likely a large portion of the people saying the Steam Deck is going to be amazing and sell gangbusters.

They don't know what they're talking about.
