Will Nintendo ever move into the 21st century with their online structure?

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I love my switch lite and have had tons of great experiences. What is totally asinine is the online structure. I can't simply communicate with other players, meet cool people, then invite them to be my gaming buddy. It should be that simple but it is not. I have to know the person then have his friend code. Instead of adding the persons name I have to insert a series of numbers, it's just odd.

Lack of communication: It should be as simple of having an open chat system and each game you can communicate with players. Alas with Nintendo it is not. You have to use an app or discord to communicate. Most people are not going to bother so communication is much harder on the Nintendo platform than it should be. I don't know why they do this ass backwards.

Friends on my list: I should be able to click a friend and send him a message or game invite. The Xbox back in the mid 2000's had this feature. Again with Nintendo it's not that simple. You can't send buddies direct messages unless the both of you are using the same app and use your phone. Why?

These are simple features that have been around for well over a decade that Nintendo still struggles with. Any news or hope that Nintendo gets really serious about online gaming?

Nintendo will eventually move into the 21st century, in the 22nd century. Keeping up with the rest of the industry is something Nintendo has seemingly been incapable of going back to when games moved over to discs, and the people running the company either don't realize it or don't give a damn.

Is your question if Nintendo will continue to evaluate a path forward for online services? Yes... Will it match whatever expectations you assume it should be? Probably not. Nintendo's approach is so safe it's almost impossible to randomly harass other players. I've definitely wanted to trash talk players who quit matches, but they prevent it rather successfully.

Exactly this kind of stuff is the reason we don't have a chat function.

When I block a player on Switch, they're blocked. As in, I won't play against them again, which is a handy way of avoiding cheaters. This is not the case on PlayStation or Xbox, which only blocks players from messaging you. So I couldn't say they're totally behind the competition when it comes to online.

Wii U was pretty forward-thinking with its networking. Miiverse was a great place to hang out all by itself, and you could use the gamepad for live video chat. For some reason, the Switch is a huge step back from the Wii U in terms of communication.

Nope. Fans will justify any shit Ninty puts in their mouths and will stay that way. They just came in hot justifying jail for a guy selling SAVE GAME FILES ON A SINGLE PLAYER GAME. Don't expect any form or logic or normal reasoning from these people.

That’s my main complaint as well. If I am to rate the online services provided, they can be much better. By a long shot the can

2.9/10 online service tbh

MiiVerse was much much a better community and tool and the idea of stickers and it’s integration working games was super clever, problem is that Nintendo is too cheap to run and moderate it and the actual technical implementation on the Wii U, like many other built in OS features, sucked (it takes too long to enter and exit MiiVerse while playing a game, for example).

Nintendo fanboy right? You're basically playing against bots if you can't communicate.

Of course they will move into the 21st century... in the 23rd century

Nintendo don't have to do anything as they are getting away with it. If Sony and/or Microsoft could get away with being as lazy they fucking would.

Their online service is still miles off even from xbox live and psn when they first launched. How is it missing such basic functionality in 2021? You still cant play n64 games on their newest hardware even though you could on the Wii! They're going backwards. Also the switch software library is shit. Theres only a handful of good games.

So we should expect for everyone to be perfect? That's why there are options to block and report someone.

By your way of thinking, NeoGAF shouldn't even exist.
I don't understand how you try to defend such behaviour, i really don't have a comeback for this......

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Maybe if they get someone else to handle it for them.

I believe they can deliver what you're asking, technically. They just don't want to take on the responsability.

Nintendo always moves at their own pace. For better and worse it works for them.

They‘d rather sell Mario and Pokemon to Sony instead of catching up to the 21st century in regrds of online service. But as long as people are willing to pay….

MiiVerse was a cool idea though. And the weird channels on the Wii. I miss this type of goofy stuff.

Switch should have better Online though. Their service is okay at best.

Hopefully not, I don't want Nintendo losing their identity by chasing what everyone else is doing.

The whole social aspect, with chat and all of that....it takes focus off the game itself and many games use that as a crutch for the game....

PlayStation has always been the middle-ground for me between Nintendos (almost no chat or social stuff) and Xbox's (leaning heavily into social, online etc)

I remember on 360 having to turn off or mute many people while playing COD, loads of squeeky kids shouting obscenities.

PlayStation, people tend not to use game chat, they are usually in a group chat and it's normally pretty calm. You might get an invite to a group to coordinate if your doing well with one or two people on a team.

Not until they start paying for it financially. And since people seem to be happy playing years old games and paying full price for them and making switch the biggest console ever despite having bad online and hand cramping controllers they will NEVER pay for it. So they will never change. Who can blame them? They're getting filthy rich with their current effort so why improve?

As barebones as nintendo's online system is at least it works i can always get connected or go into eshop no problem and not just my home region of the uk i do most of my gaming on the japan side and it still works great, can't say the same for PS4 in the 4+ years i have owned one out of every 10 attempts i can get in maybe 4 times if i'm lucky. It either just sits there with the ps symbols cycling as it's loading or plain flat out refuses to connect. I usually have to use my pc to use the sony store then tell it to download to my console as trying to connect via my console is a frustrating trial.

The best thing about Nintendo's online offering is that you don't have to listen to squeaky voiced 12 year olds telling you what they're going to do to your mom. I much prefer meeting people first in a forum or on discord, then exchanging friend codes, then playing online. Doing the voice chat for online play on discord is just fine, too.

I think Nintendo is who got it right. For the most part.

I think MK8 is ok... Smash in the other hand... I can't stand it, I play with the router right aside the Switch and even then it's shit... Maybe with wired connection it will be playable? I only play with my friends so maybe if we all get a LAN Adapter it will be playable for me

How hard was it to mute those kids?

It's possible Nintendo are going to truly surprise people in either one of two ways:

  1. They are going to create an online experience NO ONE is up to speed with yet -- offering an experience greater than all of the competition. I think it's perhaps necessary for them in order to stay relevant as a company at all.
  2. Or...they sink and die off.

To be honest, for someone that doesn't play much online, I don't mind it. But i can see the problem for more online centric players.

What I really like about the Nintendo Switch online, is the no trophy thing. Let's me focus on the game, the experience itself, instead of going around trying to collect all the trophies. Some say I could ignore it, yeah, but my mind can't if they are there, so I kinda appreciate it.

But I wish they did something more regarding social. And FUCKING THEMES

As shit as it is (and I personally think it extends to many of their major franchises), people keep buying.
Why improve when consumers will blindly take it and then ask for more?

I used to want voice when we didn't have it on pc. Then we got it.

and as far as general online goes, Nintendo is ahead in many ways. They've done lots of interesting online stuff that they don't get enough credit for it. Take ARMS, that had a very interesting online lobby. Splatoon 2 is very well done online. Very smartly organized and thought out. Mario Kart 8 works good too and does a good job of matchmaking.

They get zero credit for the interesting well done stuff they've done.

Why should them? They have an horde of consumers that will buy and defend EVERYTHING they do. Remember the Voice chat they released for Switch? Well, they DEFENDED IT.

Now they have the WORST online of the business, subscription locked, they let you play 30 years old game with this sub...And they defend it!.

They were so high-pitched I can still hear the echos, even if I only heard them for less than a minute.

But for real, it was the fact I had to do that in each game, it adds up to an annoyance.
I liked it. The best times I've ever had with online playing was when I was playing BO2 trash talking everyone lol. It's fun.
