You are forced to buy the dlc with it. All up, $30. If there was a $10 upgrade for the base game, this thread wouldn’t exist.

But that's because there is no "base" PS5 version, so if you want a PS5 version, you need to buy the director's cut expansion first.

It's not really different than the Control Ultimate edition in this regard, only that you can actually upgrade your base version, at least.

It's shitty, it could have been handled differently, but it's not the end of the world, considering that we will have 2 or 3 other games being possibly affected by this, max.

The problem is you're still thinking of Sony as the same corporation as they were in the 90s and early 2000s. They more of a media company now than a hardware one. The money is in selling software and subscriptions.

They'll be dropping out of the phone business soon, so all they'll have hardware wise is audio, photography, tv, and PS. I have a feeling they might be scaling back on audio products as well soon, as high end digital players are pretty niche now. Explains why their newer ones are just Android phones with a Sony app.
It's definitely a different brand, everything has changed after the ps2 , it's completely a different brand for better or worse , they can't live up to past expectations, never.

I respect your different opinion.

My point comes down to this: devs deserve to be paid for their extra work. If they give something away for free, that's fantastic and my thanks to them. If they don't, I won't feel they did something wrong. It's their choice to charge for something or give it away for free. And it's my choice to buy it or not. I honestly see the need for complaints in a scenario like this.

It's like, in my office I don't stay late. There are others who do. I work hard for the hours I get paid, and that's it. I'm not obligated to do stay up late if someone else in the office is also doing it. It's between them and the management. If someone shames me into staying late just because someone else is doing it, I'd be pissed.
Hey i agree. The Iki island DLC Sony are within their rights to charge $20. It's a whole new island, story and gameplay. It's the extra $10 Sony are greedily trying to charge for PS5. MS are gonna for the time being charge $59.99 for their titles judging by Forza Horizon 5 pricing. This already makes Sony look greedy. On top of that MS and 3rd party publishers are offering free next-gen upgrades. Sony aren't why??? Your anology which i agree with by the way is incorrect because you are an individual. You aren't a multinational corporation with billions. So it's not an apples to apples comparison. Sony are fighting for the hearts and minds of gamers and this new greedy outlook isn't doing them any favours. That "for the gamers" slogan is looking hollow by the day.
The other thing that grinds is how people defend Sony as they did them a massive favour by unlocking framerate and resolution on their BC games for PS5. Some even make it out as though some of the devs must have been burning the midnight oil doing these so called next-gen patches etc. This is the bare minimum Sony should be doing for their customers. Where is the patch for The Last Guardian???
Same goes for VRR and expandable storage. When will they arrive? It defies logic how a company like Sony still hasn't enabled VRR on PS5 or expandable storage(SDD). It's like they have one engineer working on the whole thing. Their tv's are even a bigger joke. They charge the most but don't even offer 4 HDMI 2.1 ports when their rivals do. This coming from the company which has the most to gain from gamers. I can't wait to hear the excuses for this one??? Nothing is free??? I mean LG and Samsung manage it magically somehow while being cheaper to boot.
It's great being a fan of a company but I will not blindly defend them when I know they are in the wrong. MS started the whole charge for online and got rightly vilified for it. Sony should equally get vilified for $70 games and charging for next-gen upgrades.

Rant over....

20$ for extra content and upgrade to superior version would be ok. Asking 10$ extra just for upgrade looks greedy. Guess I need to wait even longer and get actual ps5 version once it is discounted just like i'm doing with FF7R.

If you don’t think this is a tactical upsized sale your kidding yourself. There is no reason for no PS5 base version, the work is done.

In what way? I don't think Sony will release games on PC day and date with PS5. Maybe 12 months later. AlsoJimbo is totally out of touch with gamers and games.

Allow me to elaborate:

PlayStation has no strategy..... it's run by a headless chicken who doesn't even game.

Strategy that you don't like =/= no strategy. And how do you know Jim Ryan doesn't game? Do you have a special view into his house to know what he does in his free time?

He has a streaming service he is trying to sell and then he decides to port games to PC, thus cannibalizing PSNow numbers.

How is it cannibalising anything? Care to provide me some figures that indicate that PC ports have caused a meaningful reduction of PSNow subscriptions? Care to explain how PC ports bare any significance to PSNow; a game streaming/subscription service? The two can co-exist.

They are also paying the competitor to host their streaming service..... hilariously dumb.

This belies such a fundamental lack of understanding of how business works its actually laughable. Microsoft Azure =/= Xbox. I'm not sure you noticed, but Sony sells their image sensors to other smartphone manufacturers and other camera manufacturers (e.g Nikon). Azure likely tendered a bid to PlayStation to act as a cloud host, alongside AWS, GCP, IBM or whomever. Azure apparently provided the best offer out of these competing service providers so Sony went with them.
This has nothing to do with fucking anything and just reads as sour grapes.

MSFT entered the console market as they saw Sony as a threat, porting games to PC makes zero sense.

Why? Because you don't like it? They're getting extra sales from games which are essentially EOL on PlayStation hardware, with minimal investment. From a business perspective it makes perfect sense, and will help finance future game development. Profitability will allow studios that produce high-budget, high quality games to keep making them.

Communication is terrible, SOP's are soulless, cold and clinical.

None of this makes a goddamn difference to anything. Are the games good? Yes? No? Most of the console gaming audience doesn't live on Neogaf and watch hours long trade show keynotes. They'll watch the youtube/TV ads and decide if they want to buy a game and then go and play it. Nintendo Directs, States of Play, whatever it is that Microsoft does are for a tiny minority of loud gobshite fanboys to war about on the internet. States of Play have been soulless and boring for years, but Sony's games still sell gangbusters - I wonder why that is?

Close to zero expansion of their first party studios, Housemarque was just to replace all they got rid of.
They just bury their head in the sand as MSFT and others acquire everything.

If Sony play the acquisition game they will lose every time, they have far less money to throw around than Microsoft do. Yes yes, they have however many billion in cash to fund things, but let me tell you right now they aren't going to blow all of their cash on acquiring studios for PlayStation. That money is for the whole of Sony. They likely will see a need to invest in improving imaging sensor production capacity (which if you know anything about silicon foundries, you'll understand is hilariously expensive). They'll want to invest into their TV division, their Music and Film divisions and so on and so forth. To put all their eggs in the PlayStation basket because some sad fucks on Neogaf are mad that they're not making billion dollar acquisitions to compete with Microsoft, would be such an stupid decision I would argue whomever signed off on it was out of their fucking mind.

In business you can't be too reactionary. That is not how you succeed. To stomp around and make acquisitions for no other reason than because Microsoft dropped $7 billion on Zenimax and several hundred million on a few other studios would be reactionary and is not likely to result in any immediate success. This kind of stuff takes time and planning and won't happen over the course of 8 months. How long, for instance do you think that Zenimax acquisition took Microsoft to finalise? Do you think Phil Spencer walked into Todd Howard's office with his dick and his Microsoft chequebook out and that's it? They will have been in talks for months, maybe even years.

Jim and co are tone-deaf and he blindly chases profits, games are now 80 euro for a base version in europe.....equal to nearly 100 dollars. He nickel and dimes everything he can and he doesn't even attempt to justify any of it.

Of course they're chasing profits. This is business. Games are expensive to make and Sony are charging people the money they think they need to charge to sustain the business. You think Microsoft are making Gamepass as a charity to gamers? They're doing it to make money. If they ever see signs their competition is out of the picture, you can bet your ass Gamepass will see its prices rise and features hidden behind paywalls and segmentation of pricing tiers.

And at the very least Sony don't have the bollocks to stick 3 ROMs on a cartridge to run on a shitty emulator and then charge $60 for it.

What Sony is doing is by no means perfect and I certainly don't like the attitude they're taking in certain situations, but you're out here acting hysterical barely 9 months after the release of a console as though the PlayStation empire is crumbling right before your eyes. Well, no it isn't. PS5's are selling out everywhere and software sales are through the roof. The brand strength is untouchable even with some of the questionable decisions made in the recent past.

If you find that Sony's success is happening in way that you don't like, then don't fucking buy a PlayStation. Don't buy PlayStation games or products. Vote with your wallet.

Fucking Christ, the histrionics in this forum is diabolical.

Sony already offered the 60Hz patch free and Legends for free

entitled shits you all are…
Charging $20 for DLC is fine. I think most people would be ok with that.

Making someone buy DLC to get access to PS5 enhancements and charging $10 extra to do it is kind of shitty, tbh. I probably wouldn't even mind paying 10 bucks to just get the PS5 enhancements without the DLC. Sony really should offer an upgrade
path on PS5 that doesn't require an existing owner to buy DLC they may not want.

fair…but to me it’s really not a big deal since I want the DLC

if you want the DLC anyways…$30 I’d probably well worth it for everything

I don’t think Sony is being all that “anti consumer here” …it takes effort to add DS features and natively increase things like resolution, etc

The category a game belongs to generally does not influence how it is priced. 😂
And you're not very observant, are you? The poster you are referring to is me. We don't really know how MS will price first party games designed for the XSX. They could discount it from the standard retail MSRP price or charge what the standard retail MSRP price now is --> $69.99.

EDIT

The $59.99 price on future first party games by MS could also end up being a perk of being a Game Pass subscriber. All I am saying is, Microsoft hasn't officially stated how/what they will price XSX games.

Having said the above, I won't be surprised if MS sticks with $59.99 price due to their focus on the PC being day one.

No doubt that it takes effort. Just sucks that after paying $60 for the base game on PS4 the only way to enjoy those upgrades on the
new box is through an additional $30 purchase. Early adopters of both the game and the PS5 have to pay the most to upgrade. Just doesn't feel right. The $10 next gen upgrade should be a standalone purchase without the DLC.

Instead of putting some lame emojis, why not answer the question? Because it sounds a lot like bullshit.
And we don't really know how Microsoft will price their first party games (we're still waiting on those to release), so what he is saying about the MSRP price of MS first party isn't accurate - Microsoft could price the games to be $69.99. I know Sony's pricing overseas has been inconsistent, but in the U.S, third-party games that are $70 on the PS5 are also $70 on the XSX and games that are $60 on the PS5 are also $60 on the XSX.

In the past, Microsoft has discounted their games to $49.99 (forget the timeframe, I think during the X360 or start of XONE gen) when the standard MSRP was $59.99 but they didn't continue that during the generation they started it. They haven't made any such promises this time. So until they say otherwise, the price of MS first party games will also be $70 to purchase.
Flight Simulator is next gen only and £59.99 (not £69.99). Iff you have Game Pass it’s £47.99 day one.

Forza Horizon 5 and Psychonauts 2 are £54.99 without applying the GP discount.

Microsoft Flight Simulator has been available for purchase for $59.99 since last year. I got it on July 14th, 2020. So they wouldn't charge more for something they have already been charging $59.99. I think it will become clear in a year or so from now. Unlike you, I am just not putting a stake in the ground over it. It wouldn't surprise me either way.

Well, some other companies do just that :messenger_grinning_sweat: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Not got a stake, this was my first post in the thread and I was just highlighting that we do indeed have an indication of MS’s FP pricing.

There are plenty of off the beat examples on both sides right now in terms of pricing. Not just with the platform owners, but across the board, including third parties. We'll see a clear pattern in the future IMO. Whether we like it or not, the market pricing for games has gone up to $69.99. The transition from $49.99 to $59.99 also had some oddities, like we are seeing now.

I'm agreeing with you, as I said, it's shitty.
But it's an exception, not the normality, and even if it's not the last one, the number of games Sony will give an upgrade, are finite.

How does that answer my question regarding the game on Android and iOS?

Yeah we really don't know what they will be charging.
The industry is heading this way though.
What will be LOL worthy is if MS tries to charge full price for Halo Infinite when the multiplayer is free.

I don't think they will do that with Halo Infinite. I think it will be similar to Destiny 2 and its story based content. I know Destiny 2 wasn't sold like that initially, they transitioned into the F2P format; but based on what we know about Infinite, that it will be a live service game, they might charge us for the story content (not exactly sure how that will be priced either, since it's also a fairly new way to selling us game content.)

Judging from the pre-order site the games are 59.99. So I think until that changes that's the price. Also with Gamepass you get extra discount which is a nice bonus.

Oh I am not saying they will price it @$70.
I am saying it's not a complete game so charging anywhere close to retail will be LOL worthy.
I can see it transiting to a GAAS eventually like you are saying but not @ launch.

If I take the contents of my waste basket and post it on Ebay for ten dollars (postage not included), am I greedy?

No. Because you are not interested in the content of my garbage and doesn't want it. The fact that the garbage is not worth ten dollars is not the issue; the issue is your lack of desire for it.

So here we have thread trying to argue that Sony is greedy. But it has nothing to do with whether it is worth tend dollars; it has everything to do with you WANTING it.

Because if you didn't want it, you wouldn't be so upset at needing to pay for it. By the very fact that people get upset, it proved that the item is clearly priced correctly. If it cost 80 dollars people would say it is bullshit, not buy it, and the thread dies. This thread is still alive because Sony hit the balance where the desire is stronger than the wish to keep ten dollars. And the begging and threats are made as a last ditch hope before they pay up.

Pay, or don't pay; but don't give me this rubbish about how Sony is evil selling something for money that is optional.

I agree with your last sentence. Sony had the option to charge for it or give it away for free. Consumers have the option to purchase it or not.

If $10 is overpriced for these features, then it must mean those features are worthless. In that case, it is easy to ignore them, just get the $20 DLC (or not), and play the game happily at 60 FPS (which was a free patch).

If you think those features are very important and you gotta have them to enjoy the game more, then doesn't that mean that $10 is justified? Why is $10 such a big issue for something that is offering you more joy?

Agreed completely. Many want to have it both ways, they want to bitch about how important those features are to their enjoyment and then pretend the work put in and the money charged is unneeded or something.

Though I enjoyed my time with Ghost, I didn't like it enough to really care for the DLC in a day 1 type way, but that doesn't mean I feel the developer shouldn't charge for their hard work.

Its optional and I feel they gave a way enough free shit to be able to charge for something like this without this fake outrage as if they didn't just get a free MP mode and a free PS5 patch.

Absolutely. As you said, they have given enough free shit.

I remember last year on GAF, people were praising the shit out of Sucker Punch for being so consumer-friendly and asking other companies to learn from Sucker Punch, after SP released Legends for free (with 0 MTX) and a free 60 FPS patch way before other companies (e.g., Naughty Dog).

Now they are bad again because they are asking $10 for optional new upgrades -- which is not at all forced, and people can easily choose to ignore.
