OPINON: Sony Not Offering Performance Upgrade To Ghosts For Free Feels Anti-Consumer

Is Sony justified charging $10 more for performance upgrade when other platforms do it for free?

Dont ou get a new island and enemies etc. Its not just a performance patch right?
Im confused at this thread
Of course, the intention is to conflate the two and confuse people.
Yes, the game already has performance improvements for the PS5, and those already are available at no extra cost.
The upgrade fee is for additional content.

We already had a performance patch to play the game at 60 fps.

The disappointing thing is that the paid upgrade is lame as shit with a bit of resolution bump, some controller gimmicks and a fucking lip sync...

I could pay for upgrade textures and other noticeable stuff, but not for that shit.

Hopefully the 20 euros expansion is gonna be as big as frozen wild expansion but i have my doubts.
And you have the option to just download the expansion for $20 and not pay for the upgrades ($10) if you don't want those feaures.

How is that anti-consumer or shitty or disappointing ... I just can't understand.

What a weird thread, 4 pages on a false premise. The performance upgrade for Ps5 already came out… and the cutscenes were already in real time????!!!!!

It's 10 bucks/euros, who cares. Personally I'm not gonna upgrade, because I have 0 interest in revisiting the game (at least in the immediate future).

Some were real time, but not all.

Specific cutscenes on PS5 run at 30fps as they're pre-rendered.

Will people pay for it? If so, then it's justified. Corporations are in the business of making money, not necessarily following trends. That is unless the trend leads to more money. Vote with your wallet...or don't, and keep making threads in the hope that things will change.

there is content with it. so i will wait to see if the content is worth the price asked on ps5.
30$ is a lot but if it's ~8h for example i don't see the problem (i would more wait for the ps5 disc with everything on it to reach even lower price though)

True, but shit even PC doesn't do that 100% of the times.

This is business regardless of where its at. I don't see why a team would add extra content, work on enhancements and then proceed to not want to be paid as if it makes any type of sense.

I have nothing against the teams that can do this for good will, but by no means is it the norm.
I wouldn't say that it is necessarily goodwill when they do this. They are simply trying to entice folks to buy the game and keep the game competitive with the current market. Games on console are treated differently since the tech only changes once every 5 or so years so plus console gamers tend to move on to the more shiny games leaving old games behind.

How so? Lost Legacy was that much and they've already provided a huge game with no mtx, free expansion, and free 60fps patch.

I am not complaining about having to pay for the dlc, if it was 50 and worth it, for me that would be fine.

But having to pay 10 extra bucks just to get the ps5 version is dumb... Specially when Sony used to push the cross buy thing so hard. Indeed... Sony PS4>>> Sony Jimbo.

Of course, the intention is to conflate the two and confuse people.

It's not.

If you have Ghost on the PS4, you have to buy the DC upgrade that has the expansion for 20 usd, then if you want to play the ps5 version you have to pay an extra 10 bucks.

Yeah... 30 usd is not the end of the world, but since MS doesn't do that and Sony used to push Cross Buy...

This Sucks No Good GIF

We literally got 60fps at CBR 4K upgrade for PS5 when playing PS4 version many months ago. The directors cut literally has Iki island expansion along with haptics/triggers etc. The resolution/fps in directors cut isn't a selling point for me since it's already there in the OG PS4 version when played on PS5 version.
So $20 is a reasonable price for this but not the $30 greedy Sony want. Day by day Jimbo is pissing me off more. It's obvious he's not a gamer and clueless to what gamers want.

By that definition everything should be free.

Sony is upfront with what you get for the 10 bucks. You are not forced to upgrade, since you can just buy the DLC for the PS4 version which got a free 60fps boost. This is just some people saying that they dont like the price, which is not the same as being anti consumer. Are all luxury products anti consumer? Is every "brand" anti consumer because cheaper off brand alternatives exist? No. They are more expansive than some alternative, but its not the same as being anti consumer.

Its anti consumer if you split the entire market with your competition and then dont compete, so you can freely set prices. Something american ISP's do. You could also argue that putting EXP boosts in a full priced single player game is anti consumer, because the consumer did rightfully so not expect there to be free to play mechanics in a full priced game.

However, as much as you might not like the price tag, Sony is very upfront with what you get for the money and offers you the choice to not upgrade. Hence its not anti consumer.

I myself might not do the upgrade but still get the DLC, depending on how much of an improvement there is. And I think that's fine. If I later on decide that it might be worth it, I can still buy it. I absolutely fail to see were this is in any ways anti consumer.

You also have the option to wait for a sale.
It might not be anti consumer but it's downright petty and greedy. $20 is more than enough.

So people want a PS5 game for free? What is this, ResetEra and /r/choosingbeggars? Why should you get a free game for a new console just because you bought it on PS4? You got a new game for PS4 when you already had the same game it for PS3? No. So stop your whining and grow the fuck up and buy it to support the work that is being put into these things.

They could have just had it all under the $20 upgrade instead of being extra greedy and demanding an extra $10.

Oh it’s anti consumer alright. Anyone wanting to play the updated game is Forced to pay for the kitchen sink.

No different to wanting a fresh coat of paint on your car but told you can only have it by buying a new house.

The PS4 version already runs on the PS5 at 60fps without having to buy any extras.

We don't have to pay for enhancements. I certainly won't.

Yes we do... The lip sync on the Japanese dub is exclusive to the 30 usd upgrade for ps4 owners. It's a little thing but... It sucks.

I already made my point. There are enhancements available for free. The framerate has a much more positive impact on the overall experience than Japanese lip sync, thankfully.

I don't agree with the pricing either, and won't be buying the upgrade.

$30 for the most loyal users, aka those that supported the game before the new edition. Stinks.
Err... I keep asking this every time this gets brought up, but what do you think the FANBASE is for?

The Fanbase is not something you join in hopes of getting discounts. You become part of a loyal fanbase BECAUSE you are willing to spend more money.

You know what? I think the Free To Play gaming scene had brainwashed you. You had forgotten what it means to be a fan. You become a fan by being willing to throw money away. If you think being a fan means you get to be given free stuff, you literally have no idea what a fan is.

At least that's an improvement. We can thank Microsoft for this result. In the previous gen they would have released a full price remaster.

It's funny, a while back the Sony tribe were more pissed at Microsoft and their free atmos trial than they are about this...

Anyway, vote with your wallet.

Yeah this is what I recall too. I finished my GoT run on PS5. This does beg the question though: why are we paying $30?
new content?
like hows that alien for some of you?

a fortnite skin is what? $20 $30? but a new island new enemies new costumes? The rumor is 15 hours long. doesn't worth $30? and for me is £17.30. how is that bad?anti consumer?
and lets not talking about the new legends online. again new costumes and game modes for free

Clearly you don't know what your talking about.

Care to explain what that is instead of doing drive-by posts?

If it's a new SKU FOR THE PS5 with new stuff that is exclusive to the PS5, well no shit sherlock that you won't get it for free. Even if that is just controller/FPS/resolution/textures. You already got a BC patch with better framerate, for free, for those that has a PS5 but wants that little smother gameplay for the PS4-version, just like any other game that is on PS4 but you play it on PS5. You got a free game mode, Legends. What, you except them to hand free stuff forever to you just because you think you are entitled to shit? You ain't and it certainly is not anti-consumer.

If someone was happy to buy a game at launch, that does not give them the right to be given gifts later. Tell me exactly what you were expecting other than "you need to send gifts to customers".

Look, enough with it. If Xbox is willing to give you free games so you would switch sides, and you think that is fine, then switch already. Any attempt to argue that Sony is doing something wrong for selling a product for money, is just you not wanting to switch. So just go switch to Xbox if you like subsidized software so much. Don't stand around trying to call Sony evil. Go and play Xbox games.

$20 for DLC is ok. $10 for some minor upgrades is lame. If the game was 5 years old and they did some decent graphical updates then yeah...fine. But the game just came out a year ago.
If the upgrade is so minor, then surely you could go without? Where is the thin line that differentiate a product between "this doesn't interest me" and "this doesn't interst me... But you NEED to give it to me anyway!"
Just don't buy. The same way I don't buy Special collectors editions of games because I don't see why I should. You decide what your money is worth. However, asking for gifts is not being a consumer.

There are some things that can be done as goodwill towards the existing customer base that don't take much effort. Building customer loyalty and good relations isn't a bad thing. Tossing these small updates for free to the people who supported your game early on is one of those things they could do for this. A lot of other companies are doing just that. They had an oppurtunity to make some extra cash off the new DLC island most people would be happy to pay for and support, as well as create some goodwill by tossing in the minor upgrades for free. They chose to charge for everything.

You are correct in saying that they do not have to give this away for free and that we also do not have to buy it. They just come off as looking scummy for charging for this. Whether that matters to them or not who knows...

They could have, and that'd have been nice -- just like they gave Astrobot for free and Horizon Zero Dawn and Ratchet & Clank and 7 other games for free to everyone, not just PS customers -- but should they? No.

There is a difference b/w could have and should have. OP is suggesting they should have waived the $10, which is absurd, as this is the equivalent of asking others to work for you for free.

Just like you could have offered your professional services to clients for free, but should you? And if a client asks you to do an additional thing -- outside the scope of your contract -- and you bill your client for that, should you be called "extra greedy and demanding?" Absolutely not.

It's pretty much the same thing here.

And they have done that with the free 60 FPS patch and free Legends multiplayer mode.

Sucker Punch have more than earned these extra $10.

$20 for an expansion is fine. I'd like to get it if it reviews well.

$10 extra for some rumble and fixing the lip syncing is just weird. It's literally the newest and most recent PS4 exclusive, so I find it surprising that stuff isn't grandfathered in a bit. I think inFamous SS added PS4 Pro texture updates for free and were among the first of the Sony studios to do it.

That’s a tough sell for Sony fans when Xbox have out a patch for Gears 5, which gave with plenty of new graphical features which weren’t even in the PC version, all for free. And then they put an expansion for the game on Gamepass day one!

Telling Sony fans to act like second class citizens is a cold comfort when they see how things are across the way.
Low grade trolling.

My issue with all these threads as there is a simple solution. Don't buy it day one, there are tons of games to play on Playstations platform, and if you have a job that can afford both get a series s/x with gamepass and call it a day.

There are lots of games I hold off on and buy when they are on sale. If enough people put up a stink and dont buy the DLC/Upgrades I think Sony will get the picture and lower prices or do away with them and only charge for DLC.

Sony's stuff goes on sale super fast which is to me why I think it's a easier issue to change.

It's not like DRM issue/ alaways online issue, or putting all your cards and whole division behind a service. Those are things that are harder to correct than some pricing.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

This is my take as well. I'd be happy to pay $20 for the new content if the texture upgrades were free. But I have a PS5 (that cost a pretty penny Sony) and I'm not going to pay $20 for an expansion of a last-gen game if I know it's going to cost me $10 to play it properly on my new hardware. And I'm not going to be happy with my $20 purchase by itself if I think "this could look better if I forked over some extra cash" the whole time I'm playing it. So fuck the whole thing.

I agree the PS5 features should be considered quality of life updates, correcting lipsync for Japanese actually takes work. You have to go through all cutscenes, and sometimes change lip animation/movement to match that language. Not something that's a easy toggle or as easy as making a dual sense profile.
